P: Fade Brush Tool distorts/changes brush stroke texture

Community Beginner ,
Oct 17, 2012 Oct 17, 2012

In CS6, after painting a brush stroke using a Natural Brush, if I use Fade Brush Tool, all the texture options on the brush stroke are reverted to their defaults.

i.e. It will appear as if the Brightness/Contrast on the brush's texture option were set to 0, and inverting the texture is nullified.

This only applies to Natural Brushes.

Did you install the 13.0.1 update?

And can you show an example of what you're referring to?

Unfortunately, our QE weren't able to repro. Could you post a video of the steps/settings you're doing to give us some more clues?

Here's a video of the issue:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3FaVErHWGg&feature=youtu.be

As you can see, once the Fade dialog box comes up, the brush stroke appears as if all the texture settings were set to 0 and the invert option turned off.

What I see is the UI is disabled temporarily when the Fade modal dialog is up. When you exit the modal dialog, the UI is reenabled.

Here's what i see using the Brush Tool:

1. reset the brushes

2. pick the first brush (soft round)

4. check texture in the brush panel with Texture Each Tip unchecked

5. Reset the patterns and choose the Laid-horizontal

6. paint a brush stroke

7. go to Edit>Fade

Using those steps i see the same thing hobobear is showing in the video

Just bringing up the fade dialog changes the look of the stroke.

Dan has it exactly right. The UI is not the issue.

In the video:
-The first brush stroke I paint has all texture settings set to 0 and invert is turned off.
-I then increase the contrast & the brightness on the brush texture options and invert it.
-I paint a second stroke that looks clearly different from the first.
-Once I use the Fade tool, the texture on the second stroke reverts to the default settings, making it appear exactly like the first stroke.

So, to be completely clear, the texture options on the brush tool itself do not change. Rather, the texture on the specific brush stroke I paint is reverted to default settings once the Fade dialogue is brought up.

I'm able to reproduce the shift using these steps. It seems the Texture Each Tip box is the deciding factor if the behavior happens or not. With TET checked, I was not able to reproduce.

I also notice that on Mac (10.8.2), when you OK out of the Fade Brush tool dialog, the altered look gets saved to the pixels. Actually changes the brush stroke data.

But, when you OK out on Windows 7, the visual changes to the pixels shift back so there wasn't a change applied (unless you actually made some opacity changes or somesuch). The brush stroke data is not affected, although in the FBTool dialog the preview is definitely distorting with TET unchecked.

Thanks for writing out these steps, I'll log and have it investigated. Nice find guys.

I have a similar situation. SC6, 13.0.5. Using mouse I set a simple brush tip to fade (Shape Dynamics - Controls - fade). The brush stroke never fades and remains solid for the length of a stroke. Anyone else?
