P: Freezing on Catalina 10.15.4 on MacPro2019

Last Days i've got a MacPro 2019 with a Vega Pro II Duo, 48GB Ram, 1TB SSD and os 10.15.4. as my new main Workstation. But then Problems came up with Adobe Photoshop.

I have the following problem, which is either due to Photoshop or Catalina. Anyway, after about an hour of working on a picture (16bit mode RGB) in Photoshop with the path tool, Photoshop suddenly slows down and then there is only a beach ball and in the activity manager you can see that Photoshop does not react anymore. Why? Also the transforamtion tool ist very slow. Did a check on my old workstation (MacPro2010,PS2018) with the same PSD, much faster. Videos in the link below.

Today I have completely rebuilt MacOs, formatted them with the correct erasing and then reinstalled them. No plugins or other additional software installed. Just to make sure that nothing shoots crosswise. And here were are again. After an hour of working Photshop freezes and i have to force quit.

Please check the Adobe quality assurance to see what the problem is with GPU Acceleration.

Unfortunately I cannot install Mojave on this machine (just Catalina supported) to test if it does not appear there. If someone has similar problems with the path tool or transformation tool it would be nice to post here. Unfortunately not many people seem to have such a problem. So it might be because of my configuration? Or all People still on Mojave, because Catalina is not as good. I also did an Apple hardware test ("D" at startup) and everything was fine. Also i had no problems in other apps like Final Cut, Cinema 4D S22 or Substance before the clean install. All  Apps with "heavy" Metal and GPU support. Working as expeced, just Photoshop doesn't.

My video collection with the Photoshop problems can be found here:

https://shared-assets.adobe.com/link/d7cf2838-e4e8-433b-62cf-4793c5df6dc9

Was trying to shut off GPU... No GPU - No Freezing BUT:

Unfortunately, I can't do serious work like this without GPU acceleration. So my conclusion is the software still has real problems on the system Catalina. I ask you to solve the problem with the graphic interface with an update. How can I place point if I can't see the image?

You are Marketleader... Please please have a look into the development.
I have also seen some older forum entries. They are already 5 months old and still the 2020 version does not work properly. What is going on there? This really makes me think and it seems to be a bigger problem. So I will have to continue working with my old computer.

all the best, Thomas

Funny thing is that I can't log into this forum from my Mac when I use Safari. Somehow the program shows me the success, then I close the window, but I am still not logged in. Then I wrote it from the PC.

UPDATE login: Had to switch off disable Website tracking wich is on by default in Safari.

Today I took the time again and only switched off the option Graphics acceleration of the native system (Metal) under Performance in the GPU preferences. Restarted Photoshop of course. And what happened after 1.28 hours? It froze again. I also put the screenshots into the link above and a process analysis from the activity display. So it doesn't seem to be due to the Metal API.

I now have version 20.0.9 installed on the configuration from above and so far no problems with freezing the app under Catalina on MacPro'19. All newer Versions freezing after some time on that System. So if anyone still has the problems, my current solution is to install this older version 20.0.9 until there is a new update. I will test it from time to time and present it here.

Hi Thomas, sorry you're having trouble. When Photoshop freezes, can you get a Sample Process from Activity Monitor? https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/how-to-get-a-process-sample-or-spindump.html

Hey Jeffrey,
I have now come to test the new version 21.1.3 and unfortunately there is no improvement in sight. I made two spindumps and also a screencapture from the whole working process to the end. Photoshop simply refuses to work after about 50min. As if you use a test version with time limit! I don't know if I should open a new thread now or leave this one?

Maybe its good to now, as I saw an other user pointing out das the imagefile size could be also a potential trigger.
My settings: auto save untouched (10min.) Image is 545,6mb @ 16bit - 4297 x 6107 px sRGB 300dpi. Local saving and working on the apple ssd.

Are rulers visible when you experience the freeze? Try disabling rulers and let me know if the problem goes away.

Unfortunately no, I always work without rulers. Because then things run more smoothly. As rulers were shown in the past, Photshop always felt a bit less fluid while pan or zoom. If you had a look at my latest video, you could see that i don't have rulers on.

Also I made a system dump for Apple and send it via feedback app.
see what comes out in a couple of weeks. In the meantime I'll just continue working on my old Mac with Sierra and photoshop 2018.

So, to make sure it's not my Vega graphics card, I put an old RX 480 in the new Mac Pro and tried to reproduce the error again. It worked. The error also occurs with the RX 480. Just if it helps to nail the bug. Spindump is here, second ist crash report.

Today I tested with MacOS 10.15.5 and PS 21.1.3 - same result. After about 58min. PS stops reacting and I can only stop it in the process. Then the whole system stops responding and the login screen appears. Did a screencast, video upload if necessary.

I can't emphasize enough how annoying this is. To use such an unreliable software in the professional segment. I hope that the problem is solved soon, otherwise I will seriously consider to cancel the subscription for my company.

Hi, jumping in here because my Photoshop has been freezing when I go to adjust the saturation of a photo. I am an interior designer and put together design boards and 2d renderings using photoshop. The Photoshop application freezes each time I've tried to adjust coloring this way. I unistalled the app and reinstalled. Turned off and on the computer and nothing has fixed it. Is there a way I can resolve this?

I have a MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2018) using Catalina 10.15.4 with processor of 1.6 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5, memory of 8 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3 and graphics Intel UHD Graphics 617 1536 MB.

Have you try to disable the rulers, if they are shown? Seems to be another annoying bug.
