After latest update Photoshop 21.1.0 hangs while trying to use the Shawdows/Highlights tool. Spinning beachball appears and you have to Force Quit the app. Happens everytime.

It is the same to me. Today Iv'e updated to 21.1.0 and it's been failing. Mac Catalina 10.15.3 AMD Radeon R9 M390. Hope this can be fixed soon. UPDATE: Uninstalling and Reinstalling the Version: 21.0.3 solved the issue for now.

I am getting hanging on Shadows and Highlights on an iMac
running 21.1.0 under Mojave 10.14.6 OS and also on a latest version
fully spec'd Mac mini al.so running 21.1.0 under Mojave10.14.6 and it
happens whatever image I am attempting to edit with the jpg. images
originating on Olympus, Panasonic and Sony cameras. as soon as I attempt
to move a slider I get spinning beachball and end up having to force
quit Photoshop via the Mac's Activity Monitor. This is a definite bug.
After
further experimentation I found that the hanging only happens if you
use the sliders in Shadows and Highlights. If you enter percentages in
the boxes the adjustments work without causing Photoshop to hang.
So the bug relates to the sliders. It needs resolving asap.

It there a year bug in the scripts of updating of PS 21.1.0 if you have an ancient version on your ord. in first, to abolish this ancient version as well as all personalizations possible, reboot the computer and made a new installation of PS 21.1.0 but especially do not remind of before safeguarded shape, it is in one of saved parameter that there is a bubble!

Hi, I noticed that on my MacMini after last MacOs update S/H adjustment Photoshop crashes, while on my MBP without last MacOs update it works, Can the two thing be related?? Can it be a problem from MacOs update and not from Photohop 21,1 update?? Don't know what to think...

Mac OS 10.13.6 with PS 21.1 and was using it during an NHL game tonight and shadow highlight worked fine at the first-period break. The second-period break it would lockup PS and the computer until PS was closed. No changes after a reboot.

Having the same issue, every time I try and use the shadow and highlight tool. On a whim decided to uncheck the preview and move one of the sliders and it didn't crash/freeze. That defeats the purpose of using the tool though if you can see the adjustments as you make them.

After contacting support via the on-line chat the Photoshop technician clearly stated that this was "not a bug". After allowing them access to my computer it was stated that the presence of "BitDefender" anti-virus was the culprit (though why there had been no problem before Photoshop 21.1.0 isn't clear to me). Removal of BitDefender and then uninstalling/re-installing 21.1.0 by them seems to have done the trick.
I have been in touch with BitDefender and they say try re-installing the anti-virus program and if there is a problem they will troubleshoot it and resolve it without having to go back to Adobe. However, for now, I am a bit dubious about following their suggestion.
Has anyone else with problems got BitDefender installed? Does anyone have any comments about reinstalling Bit-Defender?

I am having the same problem. No BitDefender here either on the Mac. I imported a raw file from Lightroom to PS and after a lot of cloning and tweaking to the shot (now wasted), I felt it needed a little more shad/highlight work. It's hanging each time and needing a force quit.

Google translation..... english at the bottom of this post
Google translation.....
More high in this debate I have explain how
delay everything in function....
It is necessary to uninstall PS 21.1.0 without keeping your individual parameters, to abolishing all references to PS in your system, not data!!!!!
To reboot the computer, NOT TO TAKE BACK your individual parameters, but to create them of new, me do not speak about forms, paintbrushes, gradations etc but particularly about tools, toolbars, working space.
But try these functions before changing the parameters of PS, if this works, it is one of individual parameter which includes a problem.
Personally, I redefined toolbars and working areas and now everything works perfectly. (macOS 10.15.3 on iMac and PS 21.1.0)

Merci, thank you for that Yves. I'll just do my shadows work in Lightroom for now until an easier and less drastic solution appears. It serves me right for going back to the old pre-Lightroom ways really.

For me, there will not be answer of Adobe the only resolution is mine since a net reinstatement and without personalization works perfectly.....
There are only 100 persons who announce problems, on how many potential users..... It is what make me say that there is not of bug, only some old relics which do the pigsty!
It is necessary to be modest and sometimes to accept that problem can come from be!

Add me to the group that has had this problem for a week. Mac OS 10.13.6, and PS 21.1.0. As soon as I open Shadow/ Highlights and attempt to alter the shadow default, PS freezes and I have to stare at that colorful demon of a rotating ball.

For those who see the problem on Macs as being linked to anti-virus programs removing the anti-virus program may resolve the situation (BitDefender in my case). Alternatively making Photoshop 2020 an "Exception" may also do the trick. Both have worked for me, the removal route being 100% effective as far as I can tell on my machines but creating an "exception" for Photoshop 2020 works well providing you take a second or two before moving a slider. iIf your over eager you may still get the occasional lock up. Whatever Adobe Photoshop Support told me during an on-line chat I am still convinced this is a bug introduced in version 21.1.0 as it never occurs in the earlier versions I still have installed.

I come back, personally, I did not take back my personalizations of PS previous versions, particularly the toolbar and workspace, then I had no more worries, even having recreated of very rooms the toolbar and my workspace.
I am on Mac, but perhaps that it is similar on Win.

I have the same problem, with no anti-virus software installed. Judging from the comments here, it's time to roll-back to an earlier version. I use S/H all the time.

Further research has shown that on my machines running Mac OS 10.14.6
switching on the option to use the Graphic Processor in Photoshop
Preferences results in the lock up, unchecking the option clears up the
problem.

That also disable the rotate view tool, something I use all the time. The problem will be cleared when Adobe fixes the bug, disabling functionality of the program is not clearing up the problem.

I can confirm that disabling GPU processing allows me to use the sliders on the S/H panel without the application freezing. However, disabling GPU makes the app perform in a surprising way: when first opened, 50mb DNGs do not display promptly. Sometimes the image is only partly visible and partly gray, sometimes the image appears as a gray rectangle.
