P: If a 'multiply' layer is at the top of my layer stack, moving a layer beneath it doesn't work

Photoshop v24.7, Windows 10.

Note: this did not happen in the previous version.

The attached movie shows the problem. The top-most layer in my layer stack is a multiply layer - it has the UV's on it for a 3D model I'm working on. If I pick and drag anything around in the layers beneath this multiply layer, everything gets corrupted and does not revert to a 'clean' document view until I hide and then unhide the top-most multiply layer. It seems to be provoked by the presence of text layers.

That looks like a GPU issue.

Try the following steps (closing and restarting Photoshop after each).

1. Go to Preferences Technology Previews and check Older GPU Mode (pre2016)

2. If that did not resolve it uncheck it and check Deactivate Native Canvas

3. If that did not resolve it uncheck it and got to Preferences Performance and uncheck Use Graphics Processor

The "older GPU mode" worked right away. Checked that and it's now behaving as I would expect.

The GPU was bought Dec 2016 so that sort of matches the description of the checkbox.

Thanks, your GPU is borderline but you could try installing the latest Studio driver from NVidia (536.99) and see if that enables you to uncheck the Pre2016 box again.

If you do update the driver , use the Studio driver not the game driver and when installing choose Advanced options then Clean Install. That will ensure any remnants of the older driver are overwritten

Thanks. I did a clean install of the latest studio drivers but that didn't help so I'll stick with the "older GPU mode" for the time being.

Maybe now the crypto market has imploded, I might be able to actually buy a modern GPU for less than the price of a car. 😄

@davescm So I upgraded my graphics card to an Nvidia RTX3060i and unchecked the "old gpu" option and the problem came back - any time a multiply layer is visible, I can't move anything underneath it without the blocking artifacts seen in my original video. Hi

The RTX3060 is very capable of supporting all the functionality of Photoshop so there are some additional steps you can take.

First, can you reinstall the GPU driver using the Studio driver and choosing Advanced options and then choosing Clean Install. Do not install the GameReady option, it is for gaming and is not needed on a PC used for creative use.

I currently have Studio driver 531.61 installed here with my RTX3090 and it all works without issues.

Next , lets ensure all the GPU options in Photoshop preferences are set correctly:

Photoshop - Preferences - Technology Previews - Deactivate Native Canvas - unchecked

Photoshop - Preferences - Technology Previews - Precise Previews for 16 bit documents - checked

Photoshop - Preferences - Technology Previews - Older GPU mode (pre2016) - unchecked

Photoshop - Preferences - Performance - Use Graphics Processor - checked

Photoshop - Preferences - Performance - Advanced Graphics Processor Settings - all checked*

* Note : You may only see the 30 bit display option if your monitor supports 10 bits/channel

Third, if all those options are correct and you still have the issue then, make sure you have saved all your brush sets, actions etc and reset Photoshop preferences. The preferences file contains more than just the user options in Preferences settings and may have become corrupt and need a complete reset to use the GPU functionality of your new GPU as intended.

Ok all those done. New clean studio driver installed, killed the preferences and reset it, even nuked photoshop completely and did a full clean install and the problem still exists. So this is an actual bug, not something that can be cured with preferences.

Drag any of the text layers around and you'll see what I mean. Go back to an older version of photoshop and it doesn't happen. If you hide the multiply layer - the top-most layer - it also doesn't happen.

It's not limited to this file either - it's any file with a multiply layer in it - anything I drag below that layer now causes this artifact. And again, in older versions this didn't happen.

@davescm also worth pointing out - for what it's worth - I've been using Photoshop since the Silicon Graphics days in 1989. So I'm not exactly a newbie. That's why I notice when stuff breaks so obviously like this on a version change.

Ugh - the same thing happens with 'merge layers' too. Create two new layers, paint in them, then merge them. The outline of the combine layers goes white until you hide and un-hide the top multiply layer. Also did not happen in the most previous version. They've changed something and it's messed up multiply layers.

I'll try your file when I get back to my office this evening, on a current and an older PC. With each version of Photoshop, more functionality is being directed toward the GPU. However, I've not seen any of the screen issues you describe here on either of my systems so far.

Thanks for the file - I can indeed replicate it with that file in v24.7.

I therefore did some more tests and could replicate it with an 8 bit RGB file, 512x512 px, with just 3 layers :

Lower layer : Background filled with 50% grey,

Middle layer Text,

Upper Layer filled with a light grey set to multiply.

Moving the text caused on screen glitches.

A 16 bit file was fine which is why I did not see it earlier when testing and had not encountered it using PS daily. Strangely, resizing to 1024 x 1024 and then back again to 512 x 512 resolved the glitching. A new file immediately glitched again though.

I tried your file in the beta version v25 and it worked fine there. I agree this looks like a bug in v24.7 affecting the compositing of 8 bit files

@CShubert Are you able to replicate this issue on a Windows system using 24.7 using @chrisell99 's test file or a simple 3 layer 8 bit file I used above.

I am not sure whether it is fixed in the beta or whether the change in 24.7 was never in the beta (I'd never seen it but I work mostly in 16 bit). Either way I've move this thread to 'bugs' and tagged Adobe's CoryShubert.

Can confirm this is still very very broken in v25.0.0

I'm going back to my old copy of CS6 for the time being - it was the last truly stable version of Photoshop and it's faster in every operation.

@CJButler @Caity.psd Can we get some visibility on this issue please? It's making working with 8bit files basically impossible at this point. The problem started in v24.7 and persists in v25.1

I am not able to replicate the issue on my Windows box; as Dave mentioned, it does look like the GPU is pooping out; one certain way to confirm is to switch the document status indicator to GPU Mode and make sure that it says D3D12; if it says anything else, then the document is not working.

Do any other documents misbehave like this? If you create a new document of the same dimensions, and copy/paste everything into that, does that work?

@davescm was able to replicate it in his later post. I've reverted to v24.5 for the time being as it's the only way I can get work done. It's basically every image I have - I do a lot of videogame work and all my textures are stored as 8bit RGB. They all work great in v24.5 but once I go higher than that, I get this compositing error which makes it all but impossible to use.

In v24.5 the document status indicator does say D3D12

It's worth noting that between the start of this thread and now, I've swapped out graphics cards and it still happens. It also happens on the machines in my office across various cards (where we have tens of thousands of textures that are all 8bit RGB). The only way to get rid of it is to revert to v24.5 or earlier versions of Photoshop.

Yes - new documents or existing documents. Anything that is an 8bit RGB doc and it does it.

Also it's not limited to dragging layers around - ANYTHING I do on a lower layer causes this. For example if I marquee a section of a lower layer and fill it with a colour, it fills partially white until I either hide and unhide the layer, or do it with the multiply layer turned off.
