P: LrC (11.0.1) Edit in PS2022 fails because Photoshop could not be launched - Error Message

Since updating my subscription to Adobe for Photographers (Photoshop & Lightroom) I am having an issue when launching Photoshop 2022 from Lightroom v11.

If I right click on the image I'm working on in Lightroom and select 'Edit in Photoshop 2022' I am asked whether or not I want to edit a copy or the original (as I would expect).

If I select "Edit Original" everything works to plan, the image opens in Potoshop and I can proceed.

However:

If I select either "Edit a Copy with Lightroom Adjustments" or "Edit a Copy" I have an issue.
I can see the copy being created on the Film Strip at the bottom of the Lightroom screen, Photoshop starts up and stops at the launch screen but the image fails to open in photoshop.

If I wait for 2 or 3 minutes I recieve an error message in Lightroom: "The file could not be edited because Adobe Photoshop 2022 could not be launched"

If I then select 'OK' in the error message the image immediately opens in Photoshop and I can work away.

This morning an followup update to Photoshop 2022 (to Ver: 23.0.1) was installed and it made no difference.
This afternoon Camera Raw also had a followup update to Version 14.0.1 and it has made no difference.
The problem is still there.

Is this a bug or is there a some way I can fix the problem.

I'm using a Windows PC - Running Win 10 and it has 24gb of RAM

Based upon customer reports, most issues have been reported fixed by either the remediation steps and/or the installation of Photoshop 23.1, released Monday, December 13, 2021.

Thank you for your patience.

Greetings all,

Update: Please install Photoshop 23.1, released on 12/13/2021 and let us know if we are still seeing the issue after updating Photoshop.

Workaround:

To all those who may be experiencing this issue. Our investigations have found that, in some cases, GPU detection is causing this issue.

A similar issue was resolved in this thread by following these instructions:

After 8+ hours I'll leave my system the way it is.  Unfortunately a new action I purchased seems to no longer work with this older version of photoshop.  I'm afrait to let any more remote workers on my computer:

I lost all user presets and user print presets in lightroom.

Adobe uninstalled and installed everything many times, includeing creative suite.  I was assured nothing will be lost- that was not true.  in addition to the presets, I also have galleries in my library that no longer have any edits done to them.  I was lucky where it cut out, I don't think I will need those files as they are already backed up.

Again, if you have this issue, try using an older photoshop, it works better for me other than presets and actions

It used to, but I think this bug has returned. I'm sure it will be fixed in an update.

Ok good and bad news!

The good news it's fixed for me.

Bad news is I did have to replace the graphics card.

I had a Firepro V5900 that PS said was not supported under performance in Photoshop.

New RX550 does appear as supported and the programs work perfectly as expected.

I’m not sure about others but when I try this, my performance preferences
do not give the option. It also thinks my Intel 4000 onboard GPU is
“unknown” :(--

Problem also fixed when I replaced my graphics card. This appears to be the root problem.

For me it worked by resetting just the Lightroom's preferences.

Not a possibility for me. It would have to go back to Dell. Further, it all worked until this latest PS, which has trashed thousands of people.

I can't upgrade my graphics card (in a laptop).  If that is in fact the reason PS is failing, it would require me to buy a new computer.  Previous version of PS ran slowly but worked.

Can I install an older version of PS but keep the newest version of LR, which is working well?

Engineering has an idea on what might be causing the problem and have asked us to have anyone affected by this issue try the following steps and if they still see the problem:

  1. Launch Photoshop 2022 independently.
  2. If they see a dialog for “Graphics Processor Compatibility Check” on launch, tick the “Do not show again” checkbox on the dialog and then click “ok” to close the dialog
  3. Quit Photoshop. (Do not reset Preferences or Warning Dialogs post this)
  4. Then Launch Lightroom and proceed with their workflow for the “Edit in Photoshop” option.

Hi,

I answer to this tip :

  • Launch Photoshop 2022 independently.
  • If they see a dialog for “Graphics Processor Compatibility Check” on launch, tick the “Do not show again” checkbox on the dialog and then click “ok” to close the dialog

I have any message by Photshop 2022 when I open it independently.

But, I've always got the message in LR when  I want to edit in PS.... It is curious that we have to wait 100 seconds before having a message....

Under edit/performance you will see Graphics Processor Setting.  In my case, it says "unknown GPU" so I cannot get to the "use graphic processor" setting.    My teck guy came and did the system review for me and he says I have the graphics crd that Adobe suggests.

So Adobe want us all to get new graphic cards? When all was working ok before software updates.

Adobe please get this sorted asap! Its gone beyond a joke at this stage.

"So Adobe want us all to get new graphic cards? When all was working ok before software updates".

Nope, but Adobe is moving more and more functionally to the GPU for much better performance and many older GPUs can't handle this, are buggy etc. If your hardware or OS can't keep up with newer versions, you update the hardware or stick with the older versions.

Photoshop doesn't run on Motorola processors any more, or 32-bits or with only 16MB of RAM; the horror.

In my case - in Performance it says "Unknown GPU (UNKNOWN)" and the options are greyed out. If memory serves name cporrectly that was what it said in the 2021 version also. I am currently using an AMD Radeon HD 7500 Series display adapter.

Same. Not buying a whole new computer-- because I can't just install a new card. So, Adobe must write new code and fix this, or do a registry edit so that all will be well. OR we will just have to leave Adobe Photoshop and only use Adobe Lightroom Classic.
