P: No image preview on Open dialog box on Windows

The preview window in the "Open" dialog box on Windows is gone in Photoshop. So if I click on a PSD file (once) to preview it, there isn't one. I have to completely open the file or go digging for it in Bridge. This is a very fundamental feature that needs to return, especially for those of us that have hundreds of files to dig through. PLEASE fix this.

It seems clear by now that nothing will be done about it. Using PS 5 or going to Bridge is what I do now. Very sad.. Photoshop is otherwise so useful; maybe eventually they'll come up with something, but I somehow doubt it.

I hadn't thought of doing that, but I've read you can only download twice.... another drag... and I don't want to use it up. Boo.

Please read the previous posts in this topic that explain why this change was made at the OS vendors' request/requirement.

Request vs. requirement? Sounds like it was a requirement, not a request. I've read all the comments. Sadly, still a "boo".

Are you all seriously paying for something that's free?

I've had this for years and it never fails.

It's a .dll file that you put in common folder and register with. That's it. PSDs work.

Sagethumbs is free and found via SourceForge.  SageThumbs download | SourceForge.net .  It give you a lot of options in viewing everything in Explorer.  I got the heads-up from this forum.

Plus the link you gave does not work. It just logs me into my own Google Drive account and I get a popup telling me the folder does not exist.

This is how I solved the NO Preview issue. New to CC, certainly not happy about the fact that I can't preview a PSD file at the Open menu. (shame on you Adobe)

But, this site was suggested to me and it fixed the problem and did even more. It is a thumbnail viewer. Not only do my PSD files now show as an image in my file tree but in Photoshop, I can now get a preview of brushes and shapes just by clicking the file name. Too Cool!! No it is not free, it cost $10 but that was the best $10 spent to see my PSD files.

Thank you for your suggestion. It seems to be a viable solution to the preview of PSD and other files.

The lack of “preview” function in the open file dialogue box is severely impacting my workflow. This is a VERY BASIC THING. I cannot comprehend why it would have been removed. You would think software designed for VISUAL work, would give you a visual preview of what you are trying to open. I know “Bridge” can still show previews, but I would really prefer to not have to open yet another program on my computer to simply open a file! Please add the preview function back to PhotoShop.

I so agree! But Adobe rep has made it clear we are doomed to frustration.

And also stop blaming Microsoft, who has no idea what you're talking about in regards to changing their requirements.

How interesting. How did you find out what Microsoft had to say about it? Adobe rep has been saying they were involved in the issue.

It isn't Microsoft's responsibility to create preview functionality for Adobe file types. Supporting preview has been a request of Photoshop users since it was dropped many years ago.

I use Bridge but it fails miserably when you attempt to filter while searching recursive directories containing a few hundred files. In fact Bridge usually crashes on Windows in that scenario.

For whatever reason Adobe has decided not to solve the Preview issue for it's file types, but it would be nice if they were forthcoming about it's reasons.

Yes, I've been following the issue for so long. I use Bridge, too, but not loving it. So strange that such a basic thing could be dropped by Adobe.. hasn't been good for their PR, or their customers.

The Bridge UI is sorely lacking when compared to the other CS/CC products. Since Adobe isn't providing a thumbnail/preview option, the least they could do is bring the Bridge UI up to date.

Please read the previous posts in this topic which explain why this change was (politely) forced on us by the OS vendors.

Chris, although I moved on with this issue, it still still bugs me a lot. The things that I cannot comprehend is: why Adobe was not forthcoming (starting with CS6 I believe) to all its users about canceling the thumbnail/preview because of OS vendors issue? It would have been half as bad announcing it versus letting users unpleasantly discover the bad news. Secondly, unless I missed some newsletters, it seems that Adobe is not interested on working on a solution. Can you explain Adobe stance on this?
Thanks.

We are interested in a solution, but we have to work within the limit of what the OS vendors provide and allow.

Chris, I have been watching this thread for some time, having been an initial contributor and see a continuing set of the same requests met with the same rational from you. You always maintain that your hands are tied and that it is the OS makers that told you not to allow previews. It is hard for us to see validity in that statement since I see no evidence that the OS makers have moved their systems away from providing previews despite new releases. ( but I don't know all OSs ). You never show us any proof of your position.

May I also enquire as to whether or not you agree with the Wikipedia account of the CS6 dilemma as pasted below:

"Adobe also announced that it would continue to offer bug fixes for the CS6 products so that they will continue to run on the next versions of Microsoft Windows and Apple OS X.[55]

Note 55 from techcrunch.com/2013/05/06: The company has no plans to release any new versions of Creative Suite going forward,
but Adobe will ensure that every CS6 application will run on the next version of OS X and Windows.
It will also provide the usual bug fixes and security patches, but it won’t add any new features to the tools."

If this is true, why are we not able to get previews on current OSs? Since it appears Adobe is committed to continued bug fixes and security patches for CS6 it would also be committed to reversing out previews if it ever became necessary. I don't understand the problem here. Can you tell us again without just saying the same rather cryptic rational you have consistently used and flush it out for us a bit more?

Cheers, Rob d'Estrube

So, when will Adobe have a fix for this? That would kind of end the thread, at last.

Kind of reminds me of Joni Mitchell's "The Circle Game."
