P: Nvidia users are dropping out of GPU mode when using type tool

So yes i know i am using a very old graphics card the 770M but things were working just fine until a few days ago when this new patch hit. Still running windows 10 like before.

Now i can't find a way to get scrubby zoom to work again, its just greyed out. Anyone else having issues?

Graphics processor is ticked on and under advanced settings use openCL and anti alias guides and paths are turned on. I have restarted my computer. I have reinstalled my graphics driver. Anything i can think of

By the way, I also tried quitting and re-starting Photoshop, as well as powering down my computer and re-starting. Nothing helps.

Restore your preferences using this manual method:

Does it work correctly? 

If that doesn't solve it, you can quit Photoshop and put the Settings folder back. 

It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.

Do try disabling GPU in Preferences and see if they reappear. Just because it worked in a previous version, the updated version may still be affected. If turning OFF GPU works, it's a GPU bug and you need to contact the manufacturer or find out if there's an updated driver for it. This is why disabling GPU is an option as more and more functionality moves to the GPU in newer versions of many Adobe products.

If you wish to roll back to an older version, use the Creative Cloud application, click on the three dots (...) and select “Other Versions”.

Just updated Photoshop on 23.5 and having some issues with scrubby zoom. While seems to work in the beginning while i work on a file, suddenly stops working and its grayed out.

Is this a bug?

I have the same problem: scubby zoom greyed out after PS was updated to 23.5.0 version.  I tried all solutions for older versions - no success.  My graphics processor is compatible:

I'm having the same issue after Ps was updated to the 23.5.0 version, I checked the compatibility with my graphic processor and its okay.

Checking compatibility isn't the same as disabling the GPU and letting us know if this fixes the issue or not; does it?

"We have noticed an issue with Ps and Nvidia cards and are working with them to solve this which is why you are seeing Ps not using your GPU."

It seems there is problem with Nvidia graphic cards and they are working to fix it. Personally I do not see any problem with scrubby zoom nor when using Type tool (Nvidia 2060) but some users do have problem which are already reported.

After upgrading to 23.5 on my Windows 10 PC, every few hours the 'animated zoom' function crashes requiring stepped zooming. Only resolves after a reset.

Also, whatever position the canvas was in overscroll becomes stuck.

Similar here - updated to 23.5 on WIN10. scrubby zoom not working at all with a draft look on the middle zoom percentages. Tried all possible - including updating to the latest NVIDIA drivers, switching on/off hardware acceleration, reset all PS preferences, bit nothing. Older versions of PS installed on the same PC work fine with scrubby zoom with same settings in Performance Preferences. Moved back to 23.4.2 for the moment.

Hii guys 

I was wondering if anyone can help me with this because I'm at my wit's end and I've never encountered this problem before. My Photoshop scrubby zoom will be checked on, on startup and then  after a second or so when I come back to check it it will be off and grayed out, I just have no idea what could be causing this or how to fix it, I've always used scrubby zoom and its something i really like to use so id love to get it back working 

my graphics processor is: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M 

laptop: Dell XPS 9550  

OS: Windows 10 

what I've done 

• updated my drivers as some graphics drivers were out of date, but still nothing 
• reset all my preferences 
• uninstalled and then reinstalled photoshop 
• checked use Graphics Processor

I just updated to V 23.5 and am finding the scrubby zoom stops working (box greys out) when I have text in a file and select the text to edit. The screen flashes quickly and scrubby zoom ability goes away. I can close and reopen the file without restarting PS and scrubby zoom comes back. Then once I select the text the same thing happens. This has never been an issue with previous versions. I'm regretting updating as scrubby zoom is the only way to fly. Anyone have a fix?

@Blackie74 , what you were doing before it stopped working is a great clue; we'll start looking into this. It would be really helpful if you could share your System Info (from the Photoshop > Help menu) with us.

The symptoms, based on these notes, appears to be that a layer of code that Photoshop uses to talk to the GPU is initially showing healthy on startup of Photoshop (the GPU compatibility window shows this), but then in the middle of the Photsohop session, it fails.

This is common for older cards, since drivers stop getting actively updated, and operating systems move on with their own standards, leaping ahead of what the cards can do. Photoshop depends on a common GPU interface that is in the process of being deprecated, and all of that is mediated through drivers and the operating system.

But clearly Photoshop could do better to inform you of when the GPU interface goes down (noticed by some folks here when scrubby zooming dies out on Windows).

For others running into this issue, we're not seeing the problem, so without the combination of cards, drivers and operating systems we're at a disadvantage. The most helpful thing you can do would be to always send us a crash report, and if you include a comment about what card you have and what you were doing, that would be a great help. We sometimes (not always) reach out to customers that include their email address in the crash report for follow up, so don't be shy about including that. If we get enough of these, we might be able to draw some inferences as to what could be failing.

And again, for those noticing the issue, does the issue reproduce consistently as you're doing something specific? Does PS 23.4x still work for you, or is that also unstable? If it's working, then we can narrow down the focus to the changes just put in for 23.5.

So far, those that shared their GPU details were for older GPU cards (2014/2015); that's helpful. We will look to see if we can test on one of the stated cards to see what's up. There is a decent chance that those old cards are too unstable to be used with Photoshop (because both operating systems and Photoshop have to keep modernizing use of the GPU for better performance and features), and the 'solution' would be to shut the GPU features down on Photoshop while using one of those cards. But we'll see if we can rescusitate first.

Another thing to try is to install drivers directly from nVidia rather than allow Windows to install the latest driver.

Upon further investigation, checking 'Deactivate Native Canvas' in the Technology Previews section of Preferences can introduce this behavior. If you leave that preference (in Technology Previews) unchecked, you should be fine.

Note that the Deactivate Native Canvas feature was added earlier this summer as a way to revert back to an older canvas technology, a necessary baby-step as we ramped up porting the canvas to native DirectX and Metal APIs. Those newer APIs, as it turns out, didn't work with our legacy 3D features. so many customers relied on this mechanism to continue to work with our 3D features.

If you depended on using 3D features or otherwise had to 'deactivate the native canvas' to fix other issues, be advised that 22.4 will be your better option until we can correct this issue. We are working on a fix to restore this state so that you will have the option back.
