P: Photoshop 2025 v26.6 Bug - black document window

Photoshop 2025 v26.5 was working absolutely fine, then I made the mistake of updating to the latest patch, version 26.6.0 on my M4 Mac Mini.

After updating to 26.6, the actual document window is solid black - even if I open a photo or previous document...

Even though the Layers and Channels palette preview thumbnails are showing what's in the document...

After digging around in Preferences, I tried turning off the "Use Graphics Processing" option and relaunching Photoshop afterwards, and it's working fine again...

I'm just wondering if this is a bug related to the M4 Mac Mini graphics driver compatibility with the version 26.6.0 release? And, if so, when can we expect a fix from Adobe.

I've discovered the workaround for now, but obviously turning off the Graphics Processing setting will affect perfomance. Like I say, with this option switched on previously to the latest 26.6.0 release, it was working fine so it must be a new bug with 26.6.

I'm never updating this software ever again!!

I have recently upgraded my Mac Studio to Sequoia 15.4.1 and My Adobe CC apps (Lightroom, Photoshop and Camera Raw) to the latest versions (14.3, 26.6.0 and 17.3 respectively).

Now when I right click on a Lightroom Image and select "Edit in Photoshop 2025", the file opens in photoshop and the thumbnail is visible in the layers panel, however, the workspace displays a solid black footprint where the image should be.

I have tried restarting my Mac, temporarily disabling the GPU performance and resetting the Workspace Essentials via Window --> Workspace --> Reset Essentials. I get the same experience when trying to create a new photoshop document.

Is this a problem with my upgrade or simply a setting that has been changed during the update?

Thanks.

Yup, Ps 26.6 is buggy. Let me find yesterday's post that is filled with folks having this error (always a good idea to search for existing issues before posting a new complaint). The post... has a few workarounds -- roll back to previous version, other machinations with Ps' settings.

P.S. the "footprint" is the document window, ordinarily filled with the image you just opened.

Hi Larry,

My apologies for not finding the previous post - I don't usually post to forums.

Thanks for your response and I can confirm by changing the Image --> mode from RGB Color to CMYK Color this apears to have me working in PS again.  I look forward to Adobe's fix.

Most workflows are RGB. When you change mode fron CYMK (Millions of colors) to RGB (Thousands of colors) the color shifts. However, changing from RGB to CMYK there is no shift. If it looks good in RGB, it will look the same in CMYK. It really depends on your workflow and how critical color is in your files. Having to work in CMYK and/or being forced into turning off GPU processing to use photoshop is totally unacceptable, especially to those of us who use the software to make our living as photographers or retouchers . Hopefully Adobe will have this issue fixed soon.

I'm having the same issue on my M1 Mcbook Pro. Converting the file to CMYK resolved the issue but I was concerned if there was any degredation from changing the color profile. I reverted to Photoshop 26.5 and everything is working fine again.. I can send system information if that would be helpful.

I have the same problem on my MacBook Pro M4 Max with 40 GB of ram. I went back to Photoshop v26.5.0 which works fine.

After updating to Photoshop v26.6 a number of my images open up and all I see is a black image. I can't get any of the layers to show. If I create a new image and select the background to be transparent or white, all I get is a black image. I went back to v26.5 and everything works fine.

@Bernard32336728qgni try manually resetting your Photoshop preferences
https://helpx.adobe.com/ie/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually
Remember to back up your settings before doing the preference reset
https://helpx.adobe.com/ie/photoshop/using/preset-migration.html

If that doesn't help, try using the Adobe cleaner tool

Hi,

I just instalked the update for Photoshop 26.6.0 on a Mac Studio M2 Max  32 GB Ram running Sequioia 15.4.1
when I open a Raw image in Photoshop,  from Lightroom or directly (Post Camera RAW) the image is black.

I know this was also a problem back in I think 2022 and the workaround was to turn off the graphic processor, (which does work as a fix) but I really don't want to do that. Plus the last time it happened, they released a bug fix.
Is a bug fix iminent?
Thank you

Yeah @Dimitrios37266978173g rolling back to the previous version is a valid fix. This wasn't an issue until the version that I belive came out earlier this week. I updated yesterday and thats when the problem occured. Turning off Graphic Processing and waiting to see if next update fixes it is one option, the other option is to roll back on version and then wait to leap frog to the fixed version whenever that comes out.

Exact same issue for me.

Your work-arounds (I won't call them fixes) DO WORK but as someoene else mentioned, all previous version work fine with "Use Graphics Processing" turned on.

Same issue with RGB files opening as black images. I was running latest version of Sonoma and when I got through to tech support, they told me I had to update to Sequioa with photoshop v.26.0. I hated to do it but I did. Updating OS did NOT fix the issue. And now I can't get through to Adobe. (Their phones lines are probably getting flooded with thousands of complaints) Since I'm a retoucher who works with very large files, turning off graphics processor really slows down performance. (tested on a 14GB_RGB.psb file). So, disabled auto update (temporarily), uninstalled PS v26.0.0 and went back to v26.5.0. Voila. Problem fixed. Will update in a few days or however long it takes Adobe to fix the issue.
