P: PNG Images Opens with Distortion

From time to time, when I open a png image, it will appear as bright, distorted lines.

I have deleted all Photoshop preference files, uninstalled the app, reinstalled it and restarted the computer. Does not prevent it from happening.

When it happens, I can quit Photoshop and reopen it and the png appears correctly. But then it will happen again later that day or the next. Rinse/Repeat.

Very annoying. Please get better quality control Photoshop. CC seems to get progressively worse in terms of bugs.

This PNG distortion issue should be fixed with the Photoshop CC 2018 (19.1.2) update which is now available.
Please install the update and let us know if you still see this issue.

To update, click Update next to Photoshop CC in the Creative Cloud desktop application.
If you don't see the update right away, click the 3 dots in the upper right and choose Check for App Updates.

Pete

Hi Ryan,

I didn't find a case for this filed with InDesign. Do you have any screenshots that you could share of this behavior happening in that app? Feel free to either post it here or email me anything that would help them see the problem and I'll include it in the case.

Thanks,
Hannah

Hi Hannah,

I've been having the same issue with PNG files. When you say an update to fix this is coming, are you talking days, weeks, or months? Ballpark estimate is fine since it will help determine my interim solution.

Me too, ridiculous. What's happening with adobe at the moment. Endless problems since updating. Have to use Preview to open a png. It's a good job I'm not spending nearly £50 a month for CC. Oh hang on

Hi, solved the opening issue by disabling in preferences plug-ins "allow extensions to connect to the internet" as suggested by Hannah.
BTW didn't have the problem with Lightroom CC
However why are the files opening as "Indexed color" and not RGB?
My export setting:
PNG-8
Perceptual
Diffusion
Transparency
No transparency ditter
Embed color profile (it's Adobe RGB (1998)

Looking forward to your reply, thanks

Glad to hear this is already fixed. Any timing on pushing out the update? Can a minor update be sent with just this issue? I'm really stuck on why current job with no way to edit my files at the moment....  Well, I guess I could use another product, but that defats the purpose of spending $120 a year, doesn't it?

Being a publicly traded company I can't share timelines, but releases come out at fairly reliable intervals, so looking at those should give you a general idea. Here are the last few:

19.0         Oct 19
19.0.1     Nov 13
19.1         Jan 23
19.1.1     Feb 12

This one will be resolved in the next release, which is 19.1.2. Hope that helps.

Thanks,
Hannah

OP Here.....

Came across a new problem with Photoshop & pngs....

I had cut this woman out in Photoshop and saved it as a png. The new png file that was created added some odd little bits and pieces beside her face that were not in the actual working document. They were random parts of the image that were duplicated and pulled there.

I even put that resulting png file in After Effects and the odd glitched elements showed up in AE as well.

When I quit Photoshop to restart it, it actually removed the glitched elements from the png file and therefore AE updated to not show them as well.

Very odd.

Having the same problem. And not just that but a lot of others. Since I've upgraded to 2018 version nothing is working properly and it's such a waste of time and my money. I'm so disappointed by Photoshop cc 2018!!!

Hi Hanna,

why is that the general quality of adobe products has become so bad ?
Your subscription service should have provided you with more cash thus upping your Quality Assurance Department. But it is quite the contrary. People have never been more unhappy with your software which in return has never been more buggy !

The competition is literally running circles around you when it comes to build quality. It is not quite there yet, feature wise but in another year or two it will be.

Photoshop paved the way for adobe but at the rate at which you continue to degrade it, it could also become the software which destroyed you !

I really don't want to switch but I spend a lot of hours in PS every day and 80% of that time I am getting frustrated due to all the bugs you have piled up the past 8 years. I used to have less features in photoshop back in the days but when I was working with the software I might have gotten frustrated due to not being able to make a deadline or nail a design but this day and that in the year of Lord 2018 the bugs in PS are unbearable and causing 100% of frustration. Heck, I don't even get to be frustrated over not meeting a deadline I am already so frustrated over Photoshop's BUGs at that point that it doesn't matter . Don't you have beta testers anymore ?

Dito - They (adobe) has totally stopped caring about their customer's wishes - all they care about are their customers' Money.

Photoshop adheres to one LAW only. Murphey's Law. Every that can go wrong WILL go wrong.

You can also open in Preview and hit select all and copy paste to Photoshop.

That will be the new standard I guess... You need another application to open a file and copy paste to Photoshop. That way adobe does not have to deal with File Systems when loading only when saving. But come another year or two one will probably need another app or plug for PS to achieve that too !!!

All of the sudden I can't open any screen shots in Photoshop!? I don't know why...Any screen shot I take with the grab app or the Logitech mouse button isn't opening and looks like below:

RackMultipart20180305374701d7i-6348b6d1-9ad8-44fb-b66a-46508d77c281-1038835037.png

What's happening? And is there anyway to fix this?

TIA 🙂

It does this with all png's. I have just reverted back to a previous version of Photoshop to get around it. Defeats the object of paying for software that includes updates that are not fit for purpose.

Sadly, not until Adobe's marketing feels their customers have suffered enough to make it worth their while.Adobe doesn't care about its customers.  This sort of bug requires an immediate fix! Not waiting until the next quarterly or annual patch or release!

Patrick did anyone ever get this resolved? I'm having the same issue. Will not accept png/screenshots. I was able to import screenshot into AI and export as a psd, then import into photoshop as a psd. What a headache this is.

Hi Carol,

Perhaps you've seen that this is the official response by now, but the png issue will be resolved in the next update of Photoshop.

Thanks,
Hannah

Hi Hannah,

It was a hair-pulling day over this photoshop glitch. Glad to hear it will be fixed.

For now, the only work around I found is: I have to import everything into adobe illustrator then export the image as a psd to the desktop then embed place it into photoshop document and edit it as a smart object.

It's really adding extra time onto my schedule so I will be very happy when this issue is repaired.

Thanks for getting back to me. Appreciate your quick response.

Sorry for the frustration, Carol. As it's impacting your work on a daily basis, you might want to consider rolling back to a different version until the update comes out. That work around sounds kind of tedious.

If it helps, here's a quick guide for installing previous versions: https://helpx.adobe.com/download-install/using/install-previous-version.html

Hannah

How about Adobe get off their ____ and put out a patch for a show-stopping problem like this?  Adobe should not be making its customers wait until a full release to fix a problem that has absolutely no workaround.
AND ROLLING BACK TO A PRIOR RELEASE?? ARE YOU KIDDING?What am I supposed to do, roll back to the release to open my file. Then upgrade to use the features I need. Then roll back again to open another file, then update again to edit that?
Do you actually understand what you are requesting your customers to do?
This is stupid!
It is absolutely unforgivable, the way Adobe is treating its customers on matters such as these.

You know AMPhoto I was worried about this same issue when it comes to rolling back to a prior release. I think I'm going to stay in the present and use this crazy method to work around it with illustrator. This just takes extra time. I don't have a problem importing/embedding psd files so as long as I turn all of my images into psd I can import them.

Lets hope they are quick on the repair!

Hi, I have ended up reading through this thread after having the same problem with png files on my new MacBook running Ps 19.1.1 but have resolved it by unchecking the 2 extensions boxes in the plugins preferences as advised. (bizarrely they are both checked but working fine on my iMac also running Ps 19.1.1)

I just thought I'd jump in to confirm that worked for me so hopefully that will work as a temporary fix until the next update.

Thanks for pointing that out Bekki!! Don't know how I missed that before. Maybe something to do with merged comments? (I thought I read all of the comments last week, but do not remember seeing that one for turning off the extensions options.)
Anyway, that fixes my problem as well.
