Clearly a problem here - several messages have been posted today by different users.

I have reduced it a simple action that just does a save (Control-S on Windows)

It pops up the dialog box that says it can't save the file due to a program error.

This has pretty much stopped me from working

Hi @Eric29031008fgsf go to Preferences/File Handling and make sure "Enable Legacy Save As" is checked and try again.

I'm trying to be concise as possible but please forgive me if I leave anything out. After updating Photoshop yesterday on my M1 Mac Studio (system 13.2.1) I tried to run a basic batch process on a folder of tifs that had one adjustment layer. The batch ran as flatten, smart sharpen, and then they were saved as a new tif and a separate jpg onto a folder on my desktop. Was able to record the action just fine but when trying to run batch I get an error. "Could not complete the command because of a program error." There was a button labeled "learn how to fix this" and when clicking it gave suggestions for fixing. I went through the motions suggested but nothing seems to help. I made sure photoshop was up to date and checked disk permissions but nothing helped. there was also a suggestion to "Hide all layers in the Layers panel then Save again" but since this was a flattened file this was not applicable. Tried mutiple times creating the action as well as variations. Nothing helped.  I am about to revert to an older version of photoshop.

Not sure if this is widespread or just me.

Dear Kevin, I have exactly the same problem with the v24.3.0 with running a batch process. I also got the nondescript error message popup "The command could not be executed due to a program error." I also tried running Photoshop as an administrator, unfortunately without any improvement. The error occurs every time the batch process comes to the point Save. I hope this problem will be solved soon.

@jazz-y restting settings means you no longer have the Legacy Save As chosen. Make sure that option is checked.

@Kevin Stohlmeyer I do not change the structure of the document and the file format when saving through the action, that is, whether this option is enabled or not does not matter (checked - the error occurs both with it and without it). Rewriting the save command in the action doesn't help either.

As a temporary solution, I use the close command with save confirmation.

Thanks for your reply!

I regularly export JPGs from illustrator, then resize them to a uniform width using photoshop actions.

Eg.

Step 1 : Resize to 1920px width

Step 2 : Export > Save for Web (no problem, saves me the file at a reduced file size)

Step 3 : Save (to resize the original JPG) [error message appears

KPig_0-1679603865214.png

It won't let me re-record the 'Save' part of the action, the same error message appears...

PS version 24.3, Window10

Steps to reproduce:

... Covert Smart Object any layer
... Double click(=Edit Content). (In psb file change to 16bit mode)
... When finish what i want, save and close PSB. it's done.

Expected result: If work well, normally psb is gone, i have got just smartobject layer.
Actual result: Save is fail. If i manually save and close, it works.

But if i use Action, it's fail.

Action is nothing special. Very Simple Step.

1. save  ---- An error has already occurred here before moving on to the next step

2. close

3. Rasterize current Layer

I checked that this happens to all jpg, raw, and psd files.

And all other versions work fine except 24.3. So I rolled back.

Of course, before I rollback, I reset the configuration and tried various Photoshop issue solutions that I knew. (Administrative rights also)
So, it's bug

Thanks for reporting this.

Which version of macOS are you on? What type of file are you working with? Have you tried any troubleshooting steps so far?

Please try the suggested troubleshooting mentioned in this article: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/program-error-opening-psd.html.

You have same issue like me.
This seems to be a bug.
All versions of 24.2.1 or earlier are bug-free. Even if I create and run the same action in 24.3, it doesn't work.
To use the save function in 24.3, saving directly without using an action worked.

Ha, once again, the new update breaks some functionality that was working fine before. Then it takes years to fix, or not fix at all. amazing! It's almost an Adobe tradition now.

We have verified this in the Japan community.
You can read each post with the translation function on the site ... .

24.3へアップ後プログラムエラーが表示されアクションが完了できなくなった

The submitter performs actions on a single document, not in batch processing.
The action also recorded "Save" and "Close".

When executing an action, a program error is displayed and the process is aborted at the "Save" command stage.
This problem was not reproduced in past versions such as 23.5.5.

We checked on macOS 12.6.3 and 11.7.4. So far no one has tried it on Windows.
I don't know if it is only Japanese environment. I wanted people of other languages to check it out.
If it is indeed a bug, it should be addressed as soon as possible.

One more thing, there is a "How to fix" button next to the "OK" button in the error window (I don't understand the wording in the English version), and clicking on it takes me to a 404 page. I don't know what the intent is.

It's a bug in 24.3. Rollback to 24.2.1 will activate the original action.
I made a new action with the same content in 24.3 and tested it, but it didn't work.
There seems to be something wrong with the "save" recorded in the action in 24.3.

If you are going to use 24.3, do not use the action, just press Save Direct (Ctrl+S).
