P: Remove Tool and RAM usage

Hello,

I don't know if it's a normal behavior, but when I use the new "Remove Tool", my memory usage is going crazy : In the task manager it takes 20Go of RAM, and it takes 18Go more on my scratchdisk.
Even if I do teeny strokes on an white layer.
Here is a video (2min) link to show the PS usage, the task manager, and explorer for the scratchdisk (SSD).

https://youtu.be/qToMtrUmm-0

I tried to use all the others tools, and the RAM usage is "normal". For example : 50 clicks with spot removal and photoshop uses only 5Go RAM, and 0Go scractchdisk.

Is it normal ?

Thank you !

Running Photoshop 25.1.0 on HP ProDesk 400 G4MT with Windows 10 Pro Build 19045 installed. PC has 16GB of RAM and Nvidia Quadro M2000 GPU (4GB) installed. When using the Remove Tool on a 35M pixel jpeg I find that photoshop crashes after a number of applications of this tool. The problem appears to be PC ram usage. Monitoring ram usage using the Windows Task Manager I find the following:

1) PC running no applications open 28% ram usage

2) Photoshop running without image open image - 49% PC ram usage

3) Photoshop running with 35M pixel image opened - 51% ram usage

4) Remove Tool used to remove relativel small area - 56% ram usage does not jump back down after process completed.

6) Each time Remove Tool used PC ram usage jumps by 6% - 10% and does not return back down after process. Each application of Remove Tool increases PC ram usage.

7) When PC ram usage above 80% there is tendency for Photoshop to crash (and sometimes also the PC).

Found deleting history steps has no effect on the problem. Also closing image without saving it has no effect on ram usage. Saving image did seem to drop ram usage.

In Photoshop Preferences 'Remove Tool Processing' set to 'More Stable'.

Not sure if this was a problem in version 25.0 but never had a problem like this in version 24.

Any suggestions much appreciated.

I am experiencing the same issue. It gets worse with every use of the tool, to the point where it produced an error (can't locate the screen grab that I took and can't recall what it said).I have seen Photoshop use up to 28Gb of system RAM (which to me, seems a bit absurd)

If I do receive an error and I continue using it, it seems to crash the Windows UI (doesn't display menus, Minimize Maximize and Restore boxes). Sometimes it seems to crash Windows entirely.

If I close Photoshop before it crashes, and I use Lightroom, I notice that it can affect the time taken for the Enhance (noise reduction) to work. It jumps from 1 minute (for a Canon 40Mb CR2 file) to 22 minutes.

Originally I communicated with Adobe Support regarding the slow Denoise and they suggested that I switch from the Studio driver (for an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 super with 6Gb of RAM) to the latest (at the time it was 5.36) Game Ready driver and to use a single monitor. This certainly made a big difference with the Denoise, BUT, if I use the Remove Tool in PS often enough it seems to “break” the Denoise again, and I have to reboot the system.

I’m thinking of upgrading my graphics card to something better, and with 8Gb of RAM as I have seen comments on forums saying that 8Gb should be a minimum.

It’s all a bit much that I should be having to spend huge amounts of money on hardware just to be able to use the features of Photoshop & Lightroom.

@efreet_cs robertz@12345 try changing the preference for Image Processing/Remove Tool to "More Stable" and see if your RAM decreases. robertz@12345 - that advice was wrong. PS does not work well with Gaming drivers and Studio are the recommended version to install.

Photoshop will use whatever RAM it needs, up to the maximum set in Preferences. That is normal, in fact we would complain if we experienced slow running and it wasn't using the available RAM. Once reserved, Photoshop hangs onto the allocated RAM (the OS can take it back) to avoid continuously requesting and handing back RAM.

Scratch disk is used continuously to swap with RAM and can rise to many GB (100GB is not unusual). What is unusual is that the first post indicates that sometimes Photoshop uses 0GB scratch disk. It is more normal to see around 5GB used before opening any documents.

For GPU, the Studio drivers are recommended, but always install using advanced options, and clean install so that part of the previous drivers are not carried forward. Also don't install the GeForce Experience software which is for gaming and is not required for Photoshop.

I've confirmed the same behavior internally with Intel and M2 Macs. 2023 and 2024 versions.

The remove tool increases RAM usage over time and does not release/reduce while the app is active.

Quitting the app releases the RAM.

Here are Activity Monitor findings:

Image size 5616 x 3744 px

M2 Macbook Pro

Photoshop 25.2

Startup: 1.75 GB

After using Remove Tool (three strokes): 7.65 GB

Photoshop 24.7

Startup: 1.78 GB

After using Remove Tool: 7.2 GB

@kevin stohlmeyer

Huge thanks for your answers and for being proactive; I appreciate it.

The behaviour that you described is exactly what happens to me, although mine goes up to 25 gigabytes, as you can see, and freezes my entire Photoshop. The memory then goes nuts, moving quickly from 25 to 17 back and forth until it stays at high numbers, and I have to kill the app.

Unfortunately, I can't work that way. What took me 15 minutes now takes me up to 2 hours, if I am lucky. 😞

Do you have any idea if there's any workaround?

Is there any fix planned from Adobe?

I am unfortunately stuck and can't work under these conditions.

Thanks

If changing the preference for Image Processing/Remove Tool to "More Stable" did not help, please try updating the graphics card driver if a newer version is available, and let us know if that helps.

Hi @Pattie-F in our case, we're on Mac OS so there is no updating GPU outside of the OS updates.

In further testing we've found that switching to "faster" (cloud) does still increase the RAM but at a slower pace. Using on "More Stable" (local) increases faster and we run into an out of RAM error eventually.

Hi  @Pattie-F

I've already done it, clean install of the driver Nvidia driver.

I've tested the 2 different driver sets, the game driver and the studio drivers from NVIDIA.

The problem remains 😞

"The remove tool increases RAM usage over time and does not release/reduce while the app is active.

Quitting the app releases the RAM."

That is and has always been the normal and as-designed behavior. Memory is not released while the application is open - it is recycled and reused. Requesting it over and over from the operating system is inefficient, e.g. in batch operations.

That is not a memory leak.

Now, the amount of memory claimed by this single operation is a different issue. I agree that it seems high. But again, once allocated, the memory stays until you exit the application.

PC windows 11 pro , i9-13900KF , 64gb ram , NVIDIA RTX4080.  I had no choice to uninstall v25.2 and install v25 because of that behavior to eat way more RAM, at a point to freeze PS and a message saying not enough ram !!!! first time I experience that with ADOBE.....

Honestly, this feature has been working pretty well for a couple of weeks already

Now, I seem to read that this is the expected behavior, I may mistaken sorry, English is not my native language.

@D Fosse  Whether it's a memory leak or not the problem is still that this tool was working well up to v.25 and now it doesn't anymore. Has @Kapture benoit mention, the workaround is to uninstall the new version and reinstall the old one that seems to work pretty well for me, no memory problem and can work!

They may have problems reproducing. I can't here.

I opened a 9504 x 6336 pixel image, grabbed a 450 pixel remove tool and systematically covered everything in the image at least twice. I was at it for four or five minutes. This was a complex image with lots of detail.

About halfway through, total memory leveled out below 80% and refused to increase any further. At this point I had a 20 GB scratch file.

remove1.png

All of this looks perfectly normal and expected to me.

@D Fosse  If this is an official statement from Adobe, I guess I'll need to stick to the v25 version or move to another tool

Honestly, I hope they will fix the problem instead of what I felt from your communication,,,, waived it

We may not have the same configuration but like I told you, this is a new problem that wasn't there in v25 and appeared within the 2 last updates.

@Daniel Berube

Knowing that it's not a generaly occurring issue is a valuable data point.

Then you need to look closer at what might be special on your system. If you really do have a memory leak, two common causes are 1. third-party plugins, and 2. dual graphics where the integrated GPU uses shared system memory. In the latter case, the integrated GPU can consume huge amounts, and that memory consumption tends to increase steadily over time.

It is also necessary to first rule out normal behavior. Few people realize how memory-intensive raster image editing really is. It is entirely expected for RAM to be saturated up to the limit very quickly, and the scratch file growing to 100 GB or more. This tends to freak people out, but it's perfectly normal and as designed.

What is not normal is when Photoshop claims more RAM than you have allocated in Preferences. But it's necessary to break it down, and separate what Photoshop uses from what other processes use. Photoshop plugins, even ACR, run outside PS's address space and require their own memory. So don't set it too high (70% is usually optimal).

Another thing that freaks people out is when memory is not released when you close files. Again, this is by design. The memory is reused and recycled. It is released when the application closes - and the operating system can also reclaim if needed.

If you post Help > System Info, there might be clues there. Also, the memory graph from Task manager can be useful to see how it's used over time. Set update speed to low, which will capture 4 minutes.
