I have been having this annoying problem for several weeks now. None of the solutions on the internet work at all. If this is your first time reading about this problem, these are the solutions I've seen so far (none of them is a real solution, each one causes other problems):
- Uncheck "Use graphics processor" in the performance tab in configuration. Result: It disables the rotating canvas features for Wacom tablets after a couple of minutes or just instantly.
- Check "Deactivate native canvas" and/or "Older GPU Mode (pre 2016)" in technology previews tab. Result: It becomes absurdly lagged, it is useless to work, just moving the canvas makes it go at 1fps.
I also have all my drivers updated (GPU, Windows, Wacom), PS updated, and with priority for the GPU. Is there any real solution for this? I have an RTX 3080 8 GB. This should not happen.
Hi @David286748043kl2 Go to Photoshop Preferences/Technology Preview and check “Disable Native Canvas”. Then check “Use Older GPU Mode (2016)”. Quit and relaunch PS.

Hi Everyone,
I reported the issue to engineering. In the meantime, you can workaround the issue by disabling Preferences -> Performance -> (GPU) Advanced Settings ... -> GPU Compositing.
I have just spent a few minutes with Google, and it looks like the GTX1070 is not a good fit for the latest Photoshop versions. My previous system had an RTX2070, intel 3930k, 64Gb RAM, 1200W power supply, but most of the Neural filters caused it to crash at exactly the same point every time I tried to use them, and photoshop was generally becoming a pain to use. I replaced that system in April this year, and everything works perfectly now.
A while after Bill Gates created his 11 Rules of Life, he realised that he had another big toe and was able to add a 12th Rule. Bill was known to be 'Hard but Fair' to Gen Z, and even gave Millennials a hard time on occasion.
There is no point in changing the GPU unless the rest of the system is a good match for it. Balanced systems work best, and suppliers do their best to provide components that work well together. We can only guess what hardware you are using unless you tell us, and that means the whole system. Right now, my gut is tyelling me you probably need a whole new system, but that is just a guess.
A clean reinstall of your OS might do the job. Answer our questions and we'll be better placed to advise you.
Thanks for the advice! I'll update my graphics drivers and check for conflicts. If the issue persists, I'll reach out to support. Appreciate your help.
The 'Use Older GPU Mode (2016)' is nowhere to be found in Photoshop 2024. The white squares are absolutely everywhere, so irritating. Especially when working in artboards they seem to appear frequently while moving / editing text boxes.
I have 2019 Macbook Pro, with AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 4G.
@MDIJK update to 25.2 or newer and go to Preferences/Technology Preview and check "Disable Native Canvas". I agree @Ahmed25848404i8ph using "older GPU" does slow it down significantly but you shouldn't have to use that if the first option works.
It could be listed as "Older GPU mode (pre 2016)" in Preferences/Technology Previews? Not on a Mac tho, so it could be that Adobe didn't include that option for your version of Mac/OS.
You can also try what @Kevin Stohlmeyer recommended in their comment below: Check "Disable Native Canvas" (also in Preferences/Technology Previews).
@Dmnghtt can you post your Photoshop system info, in Photoshop go to Help > System Info, hit the copy button and paste the entire thing into this thread

Interestingly enough I started to get this bug after I updated to lastest version (25.3.1). These tricks seem to sort of help but its funny I have to pretend my gpu is 2016 while rtx 3090 most deffo supports dx12. Also zooming etc is much slower now which doesnt help.
"I've been dealing with this frustrating problem for some time now. Every time I use brushes, text, shapes, etc., this issue arises out of nowhere. Temporarily solving the problem by hiding and unhiding the layer, but as soon as I make any adjustments with the text or brushes, it happens again. Another thing is My PC has 24GB of RAM, a 6500XT GPU, and a Ryzen 5500 CPU, but even with all the updated drivers and the latest version of Photoshop, I still experience lagging and frequent freezing while using the software.
