Lag with Font preview (1300+) Ps 2022, 21 & 20 on Win 10 - 2019 OK

Photoshop 2022, 2021 and 2020 experience lag in the whole application. Clicking anything takes 2 to 3 seconds to respond, the menus, any tool, even the Window to open a new file. The effect comes and goes while using the application, Task manager shows plenty of available resources in CPU, RAM and GPU. Like 70%+ still available in each. I have about 400GB available on the cache drive and installation drive.

Photoshop 2019 is the last version I can run that doesn't experience lag.

No other applications experience lag while Photoshop is lagging.

Specs:

Windows 10 Home, latest update.

I-9 9900K

ROG Z370-F motherboard

32GB RAM

Galax RTX 2080 Ti GPU - latest drivers

Main drive is M.2 SSD, other drive is standard SSD.

This issue has been ongoing for 2-3 years, every so often I install the latest Photoshop to see if it's fixed. It's not, so I go back to using 2019. I always use the latest GPU drivers, but I've tried both standard Nvidia driver and their Studio driver... neither fix the issue. I've even used the Nvidia driver cleanout tool to install latest drivers.

I have completely reset my preferences in 2022, lost all my templates, brushes, gradients etc and settings at default. I reset using the start up hotkey, and also from the Preferences menu to make sure.

This issue seems to be a problem with lots of people, probably an app conflicting with it but I can't seem to find which.

Righto. Font Preview > "None" has fixed the issue. The lag stops immediately.

I ran the Font Test script in that troubleshooting guide and all 1300 fonts passed. I also cleared the Font Cache with the tool. After relaunching Photoshop the Text Tool was not causing lag, but as soon as I enabled Font Preview again the lag started immediately.

So it would seem when the Text Engine is enabled the Font Previews are being processed for a few minutes which is causing the lag. I thought this is the purp

Forgot to mention that I have also tried toggling GPU acceleration, Use Open CL etc in the performance options. These do nothing to fix the issue.

Hi,

We're sorry about the trouble with Photoshop. Please ensure you have the latest BIOS updates installed on the computer as that may also have an effect on the overall performance of the machine.

Please try launching Photoshop without third party plug-ins by launching the app while pressing & holding the Shift key. Once you get the prompt to skip plug-ins, click on Yes & check if you continue to experience the issue.

You can also try optimizing the preferences of Photoshop using the steps suggested here: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/optimize-photoshop-cc-performance.html

Let us know how it goes!

Regards,

Nikunj

Thanks for the response. I have updated the BIOS and worked through the list of optimisations you linked to.

I'm still experiencing this problem but I have recognised when the problem occurs most often, and that is when I open an existing PSD file and the performance drop lasts for about a minute. Clicking literally anything in Photoshop during this minute or so has about a 2-3 second lag. The tools buttons on the left, the File/Edit/Image etc menu across the top, switching layers. It's the whole app, not a specific tool.

I enabled the Efficiency monitor at the bottom of the window and noticed the Efficiency said 100% the whole time it was lagging.

The PSD files I tested this problem with were only 20mb in size, not big files at all.

Another important point is this lag only occurs once per Photoshop session. It doesn't occur again until I've closed Photoshop and relaunched it.

I even tried forcing lag twice in the same session by opening 10 PSD files at once, each had plenty of layers, but it didn't lag at all. It wasn't until I closed Photoshop and then opened a single PSD that it lagged immediately for about a minute. But only Photoshop, everything else in Windows was responding fine.

Hi, what is the content of the offending PSD file? regular layers? 3D layers? Smart objects?

Please post the contents of Photoshop's Help>System Info... menu, so that we get to know your OS, its version, the exact version of Photoshop you are running, the date of the GPU driver, the plugins you have etc.

I would also suggest to disable Generator in Preferences/Export, if you do not use it...

The PSD files just contain regular layers, no 3D or smart object layers. Often there'll be text layers but not always, I've opened a PSD file with just 3 regular layers and it caused the lag for a minute.

The only third party plugin I've installed is Alien Skin Eye Candy, however this is only recent and the lag was experienced well before this on previous versions of Photoshop.

Here's an update.

I purchased new RAM, now running 32GB at 3600Mhz.

Updated to Windows 11.

Overclocked CPU (i9 - 9900K) to run at 4.8Ghz per core.

Cleared my preferences in Photoshop again and updated to the latest version 23.1.

I still get frequent lagging in the whole application, same as before. All the buttons, menus etc lag. This even occurs on new unsaved projects now and lasts for several minutes.

Hi, is Ps the only app running when it occurs?

Can you check in the system monitor if other apps are using CPU/disk access?

Is Ps the only affected application on your computer?

Thanks, I had these set to default which should be suitable for a standard 1920x1080 size that I usually work with. But I bumped the Cache Levels up to 6... did not fix.

Hi! Did you ever end up finding a fix to this at all? I've had this exact same problem. My old pc which was a Ryzen 7 3800x, 2060 super 32gb's had this exact problem and turns out the same issues on 2021, 2020 same as you.
I recently upgraded and purchased a full new rig, 3080ti, Ryzen 9 5900x and 64gb's 3600mhz ram, also purchased another ssd to see if this was the route cause also (scratch disk reasons). On this pc, same issue's occurs also on 2022, 2021, 2020. (I make thumbnails and esport designs). Constant 100% efficiency yet. Ram used is little to none, max is like 38%.
Currently on the most recent bios update, gpu drivers (tried ddu), cpu drivers, even disabled ftpm to see if that was the issue.

Very very frustrating, was considering going to windows 11 in the hopes it will fix. But if it didn't for you I don't see why I should.

Please adobe please please please. I can post my system info if needed also.

Hey Ryan,

It's still an issue. Sounds like I use Photoshop for a very similar purpose as yourself. I actually just tested it in 'Safe Mode with Networking' to rule out third part software being a problem. The problem still happened.

Can you describe your issue a bit more? When it occurs, for how long etc.

Also what Motherboard are you running? Brand etc.

Rip didn't get a noti for the reply, anyways, i'm running an Asus Rog Strix B550-f gaming.

In regards to the issue, the spikes happen with pretty much anything I think. Anything from making layers visible / non visible, moving layers, using over scroll, scaling items. Using masks/ brushes, lasso tool etc. Just alot of things. They spikes last for like 2-3 seconds happened randomly but within small increments of each other could be 5 mins could be 30 seconds. Just very odd.

Yeah I'm running a ROG Strix Motherboard as well, maybe that's it. Could be something Asus do with their BIOS or chipset drivers that causes the problem.

My issue is a little different. Photoshop runs completely fine until I open an existing PSD, doesn't matter which, how many layers etc... any PSD. As soon as I open that PSD it's all fine, can move layers around, use other tools etc... then about 20 seconds into it the entire app slows down. Clicking ANYTHING in Photoshop results in about 3-5 seconds of lag. Outside of Photoshop everything is working fine and resources aren't even at 50% utilisation. A few minutes later and Photoshop becomes good again and stays that way for that session regardless of how many PSDs I open. If I open Photoshop and just work on a new file without opening an existing PSD I don't experience the problem.

I tested this just now. Backed up my "Adobe Photoshop 2022 Settings" folder to desktop and deleted the one in the original location. Launched Photoshop, I saw it create a new "Adobe Photoshop 2022 Settings" folder in the appdata location. Photoshop running fine, so I opened a psd... all fine for 10 to 20 seconds, and then huge lag. Few minutes later all good.

Ok here we go. Looks like it's only doing it with PSDs that have a text layer.

I launched Photoshop and opened a PSD without a text layer. It was fine. Tested another 3 different PSDs without text layers... all fine. Then I opened a PSD with a text layer and the problem occurred like it usually does... it's all good for 10 seconds and then it has a 3 second lag for a few minutes.

Any other PSD with a text layer in it does not cause the problem again during that session of Photoshop, but if I close Photoshop and relaunch it even straight away, the first PSD with a text layer will cause the problem.

About 95% of my PSDs have a text layer, so that's possibly why it seemed like every PSD.

Ok, let's do further troubleshooting: is it with every font?

Can you try to reset the type tool  (right+click on the T icon in the option bar) on a new doc, type some text?

Do you have any "peculiar" setting, like Right to Left Type, faux bold, special Paragraph rules...? (you can also reset the character and paragraph panels by going to its hamburger menu, and select reset character...)

And I guess that by now, you have updated PS to 23.3.1, ran Windows updated, and checked for a GPU driver update?

Are rulers showing? Did you try to disable flick panning or other settings in preferences ? Some users reported that it helped.

Here's a curve ball, I just opened Photoshop to check and now even before opening a PSD the problem occurred. No file opened at all, not even a new file. It took about 10 seconds for the lag to start, and hung around for a few minutes same as usual. Once it came good I opened a PSD with some text, no lag was experienced. It's literally a once a session thing.

I then closed Photoshop and opened it again, waited about 10 seconds just toggling the file/edit menu etc and the lag started. Relaunched, did it again.

Windows is up to date.

Photoshop is 23.3.1

Nvidia drivers are Studio driver 512.59

Rulers are not on.

I disabled Flick Panning repeated the above steps, still lag.

After experiencing the curve ball above, I decided to reboot and perform more troubleshooting:

Session1: Didn't open a file but kept clicking between Move tool and Marquee tool buttons. No lag after 20 seconds.

Opened a file with no text layer - No lag so closed file after clicking and moving layers around to be sure.

Opened file with text layer - 10 or so seconds later lag is experienced. I clicked between Move tool and Marquee tool buttons till lag goes.

Session2: Exact same experience as above, but I tested 2 different files than before. One without text layer, one with.

This PSD only had background layer and text layer, and text is standard left to right Arial "Test". No effects, no sharpening. This was for testing.

Session3: Didn't open a file but kept clicking between Move tool and Marquee tool buttons for about 30 seconds. I then clicked the Text tool button, then back to toggling between Move and Marquee, about 5 - 10 seconds later lag is experienced for a few minutes.

Keep clicking between various Tool buttons until lag goes away.

Open PSD with text layer - No lag.

Session4: Didn't open a file but kept clicking between Move tool and Marquee tool buttons (not the text tool). Lag occurs after about 10 seconds.

Keep clicking between various Tool buttons until lag goes away.

Open PSD with text layer - No lag.

An hour later-

Session5: Same thing as session 3. Problem only occurred once I toggled the Text tool.
