P: Program error while opening or creating new document after Photoshop 22.1 update [2020]

Since yesterday's update, can´t even open a jpg file. Always says: Could not complete your request because of a program error. I need to work.

Same here!  Can't open a jpg file, even after creating a new document, can't load a jpg, and have to use task manager just to close out Photoshop.  What's going on!???

Hi there,

If you go to Preferences > Performance and disable "Use Graphics Processor" does the problem go away? If turning off the graphics processor helped, then please try updating the graphics drivers from the manufacturer's website and then re-check "Use Graphics Processor" under Photoshop's preferences, relaunch Photoshop and let us know if you're still having an issue.

Me again, sorry.

Closed Photoshop, and tried it again. The same problem. The only thing that works is disabling the Graphics Processor. Any another clue about this issue?

Hi, I'm having the same issue. I've already tried with deactivating and re-activating the graphics processor. I have also checked for graphics processor updates from the manufacturer. I'm still not able to open .jpg files and getting the "file was not found" message.

I'm running Photoshop 21.2.4 version on a Mac with Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.6

I appreciate your feedback and assistance in trying to solve this issue.

I have removed Photoshop preferences from the user library and reset Camera Raw settings from the Preferences menu in Photoshop. Now I'm able to open jpg files in Photoshop.

The issue seems to be fixed for me. Thanks!

File not found is a different issue than the program error. Could you reach out to Adobe support by phone to help gather more information?

I was told a few different things and none of it worked...I let a support person do a bunch of stuff on my computer and when none of it worked he just kind of bailed without saying anything.  Really annoyed.  I have stuff due today that I can't even open.

My computer will open 1 (and only 1) psd file.  And of course it's not the one I need.

You can and should always keep your previous version installed. That way you can work on that until the problem with 22 is sorted.

If you already uninstalled it, you can go to your Creative Cloud app, and reinstall it from "Other versions".

22 will not be supported on Windows 7  or MacOS 10.13 (High Sierra) because Apple and Microsoft has ended support for those systems.

Unfortunately it started doing it yesterday in the previous version...that's the reason I updated to the new version this morning...I thought it would fix the problem.  I currently have both versions installed, and both give the same errors.  This evening I am magically able to open and edit one of the files I really need to finish.  Unfortunately, I am not able to save any of my work because it gives the error "could not complete your request because of a program error."

Same issue.  Windows 10Pro, updated this mornig to Photoshop 22.0.  Can't open any file, either by clicking on it, or by opening from within Photoshop.  Can't even close Photoshop without force quitting with Task Manager.  Tried restoring preferences to default both through Preferences and by opening Photoshop with ctl+alt+sht pressed.  No change.  Tried turning off graphics processor.  Good until I restart Photoshop, then I have to turn them off again.  Invidia Quadro 600 driver up-to-date.  

How does Adobe not encounter this issue during bug-testing?  Obviously it is affecting a number of people.

Multiple system reboots and I've completely uninstalled and reinstalled Photoshop.  You're costing me and my company money and clients.  I expect a higher level of quality and customer service for a program I pay such a premium for.

Hi there. Apologies you're experiencing this issue. I know it can be very frustrating when a tool you need does not work the way you expect or when you need it to! I would be upset too in a similar situation. I am an engineer on the GPU team and would like to help you triage your issue.

I saw that you mentioned you are using an Nvidia Quadro 600 which is a video card from 2010. Unfortunately this is a very old card that we no longer support. If you want to keep using this card I would recommend that you either 1) disable the gpu in preferences > performace > use graphics processor OFF or alternatively if you want to continue using GPU features with your current card 2) downgrade to an earlier version of photoshop that still supports that very early video card. Alternatively if you want to make use of the latest features of photoshop I would recommend that you purchase new hardware - we support 4 years of backwards compatability.
