Go to Preferences > Technology Previews... and check "Disable Native Canvas" - then restart Photoshop. Does the problem still occur?

We believe that underlying issue of the Photoshop home screen appearing where the document canvas should be (temporarily worked around by selecting the ‘Deactivate native canvas button’ in Technology Preview) has been fixed, and you may now de-select that button for future Photoshop sessions. Please let us know if any of these issues return once the native canvas has been re-activated.

I wasn't having issues--then on the latest update to 23.5.3, opening jpg's crashes PS. Tried the 'deactivate native canvas button' with restart, and it made no difference.  Hoping this gets resolved quickly.

@Andrea5ED6 , we have a speculative fix for crashing on file > open that has trickled in and is affecting a small number of users. We will roll that fix into the Beta version of Photoshop this Friday, December 23. It can be installed alongside the full retail version; it will not replace it. Just click the Beta tab in the Creative Cloud Desktop application and install from there.

Recently attempting to open .jpg files crashes PS.  Tried just about every remedy that has recently been posted including loading the Beta version. Not sure why or how this is now happening but sure hope there is a fix. Not able to update Mac ver. at this time so I cannot update PS 2022 to ver. 24.

Mac: version 10.15

PS 2022: versions 22.2.0 and 23.3.5

Hi, I was getting a similar issue so posting this in case it helps anyone. In my case Photoshop was instantly quitting when trying to open jpg or tiff files. It was fine with psd or png. I tried three different iterations of Photoshop and all were the same.

I eventually narrowed the issue down to the camera raw plug-in. By going to the camera raw download page on the Adobe site and manually downloading and installing a previous version, my Photoshop now seems to be working ok again.

Hope this helps someone as I was going in circles for hours trying to resolve and get on with work.

Thanks for making this tip public! Camera raw re-install fixed my Photoshop too on Catalina + PS 23.5.5. Btw the issue started when I installed After Effects from AdobeCloud. So somehow it conflits with PS, even if you uninstall AE the issue remains.
