Thinking of buying from eBay?

The original article that this post referred to has expired but there's still quite a bit of good information in this thread.

The point is that eBay software is a risky purchase with much of it illegally pirated.

PS CS4 does phone home to verify activation serial numbers once in a while. Not sure how often or when. I assume it checks activation when the software is turned on and the computer is connected to the internet. (flexnet)

I hear what you are saying. But it seems the problem of the purchaser buying what he thought was a legit copy of the whatever program still exists? He can still get ripped off. It would be better if they could get at the seller and he could be punished somehow, "muslem style"

I am retired. I feel the $700.00 purchase price of the Adobe cs4 is excessive. Maybe the reduced price $300.00 or so for students should include disabled and retired persons. Oh well, I'll save a little and then purchase it. Frank

I have made several purchases from Ebay and am very happy with them for the most part. Amazon.com on the other hand I have made 3 purchases, one was a book and it was okay, next was supposed to be a used copy of Lightroom 2. That turned out to be a copy of lightroom 2 trial that the idiot seller had downloaded from adobe and then burned on a cd. this idiot had the balls to include a note with the shipment with 5 bogus serial number's written on it, and telling me that one of them would work, enjoy!

That lasted for about twenty minutes after I received it. Then Amazon.com immediatly refunded my purchase entirely and I got an email from the idiot seller saying I didn't have to make such a big deal out of it.

The third purchase was my current copy of Photoshop CS4 Extended. Needles to say that I am more than a little disappointed.

Hey,

It's not ebay but another online-shop. I already have the CS2 - So what is the right Version now? (And does it look serious? - Sorry it's in german.)

http://computer.hitmeister.de/software/adobe-adobe-photoshop-cs4-deutsch-15060521/

or

http://computer.hitmeister.de/software/adobe-adobe-photoshop-cs4-versions-upgrade-paket-1-benutzer-upgrade-von-adobe-photoshop-cs-cs2-cs3-15060511/

Is it right, that I have to pay less if I have an older version of photoshop? o.0

Well that is an upgrade for the Mac but if you bought a Windows version it would be best to do it with a credit card so you can get your money back if necessary.

It is the correct upgrade for your CS2 as it states.

Maybe one of our German members knows Hitmeister's reputation.

Sometimes buying pirateware leads to interesting forum questions even if it does work.

"Ok,I installed Photoshop,but it's in Spanish.How do I change it to English?"

(You can't.)

Hm I know Hitmeister. It's similar to other shopping plattforms: You got private and commercial sellers. In fact I dont know about the thrustworthiness of the sellers ...

But I think it's serious enough because they have the "TÃœV"-sign.

Hi there, I'm one of those guys on Ebay that sold pirated copies of CS4 Extended.  I was duped myself after spending $199 a piece for nine copies of the software that I really wasn't sure how much it was worth until I went to Best Buy in order to match up the boxes.  They looked so real that it was amazing to think of the amount of effort and know-how that must have went in to the job.

Now that the buyers have been refunded, I'm in the hole almost 2k and am curious as to who I'd contact at Adobe to help them pursue the man that scammed me (I managed to follow him and get his license plate number).

I posted the whole story on the CS4 windows forums and while awaiting a response there (http://forums.adobe.com/message/2668055#2668055), thought I'd respond here.  Yes the software looks VERY real, all the way down to the stickers and the artwork on the CDs.  It's just incredible.

Anyone know how to go about making sure the person that ripped me off gets what's coming to them?  Will the local police even take action or is this something they'd leave to another agency?

Sorry to anyone who's been ripped off on Ebay, but I really don't think many Ebay powersellers would knowingly risk their Ebay reputation (and in my case, my livelihood) peddling this stuff.   I don't have much of an excuse myself really other than making a bad judgment call and...how it looked so dang real!  I didn't really think that there was anyone who would be financially capable of pulling off such a monumental undertaking...for something that was fake.  I guess it boils down to ignorance as to how far piraters have come in their abilities.  It was a very costly mistake =[

While I feel sorry for you and hope you manage to get your money back, the software, as real as it looked didn't pass the "if it sounds to good to be true..." test. How in the world could anyone sell LEGAL copies of $1,000 software for 80% off?

You should have known something wasn't right. There were only two possibilities for that software...pirated or stolen.

Nonsense! Anyone that thinks they can buy 10 copies of CURRENT versions of Photoshop at 80% off is simply fooling themselves.

Hi,

I did get ripped of! But on Ebay. The guy advertised  that it was not a pirated copy its an original. So me being a photographer and to save where every you can. I bidded on it and paid $350.00 for it plus 68.00 for shipping then another 28.00 to send it back. And i am being avoided by him. Maybe i wont get my money back who knows. I spoke to ebay said i could call the local Police and charge him with fraud. But i am in Canada and hes in the United States so i don't think the athorties are going to do much for me here, now i am back to square one working with ebay to get my money back!!!!! But he lives where you are, you should contact the police and give them his plate # they might not do anything but they will keep the complaint on file of  him, so if anyone else complains they will take action. dont give up if we dont do something then who els will the money you lost and the torment you had to go through is with the fight. GOOD LUCK.

The price is a dead give away. Nobody is going to sell $999.00 PS for $109.00, un-used, in a sealed box. If it is too good to be true then it is.

Questions to ask? Anything you want because they will tell you anything to make the sale. Then it is bye-bye leaving you to sort out the credit card mess.

Yes I allready contacted piracy@adobe.com and warned the seller that there is a great possibility that the items could be fake.

I pointed to this link:

http://reviews.ebay.com/How-to-list-legitimate-ADOBE-software-on-ebay_W0QQugidZ10000000009554227

Nice I found out about htis thread and the existance of 99,99% real looking and installing copies, I can afford the regular pricing of the software but if I can get it cheaper I am gonna get it cheaper, so I will see what the answer of the seller or even adobe is.

You can purchase the student version if you attend collage. That is a big discount and it is the same version as all the rest. However, once you buy it you cannot sell it.

I bought from this seller. All was well until I tried to upgrade to CS5. The serial number from the bought item did not work - not completely false but not for a single user.

I did ask the seller originally if it would be ok to upgrade when the time came. Replied in the affirmative, but then she would, wouldn't she?

what to do now, months after the orignal purchase.

I notice she is no longer selling on ebay. Anyone know what name she's using now?

YEAH THATS TRUE......DONT EVER PURCHASED A  SOFTWARE PRODUCTS FROM EBAY BECAUSE

MOST OF THE ADOBE PRODUCT SELL AT EBAY ARE " PIRATED" .

IF YOU PURHCASED FROM RESELLER :

1. YOU WILL NOT RECEIVED ANY SUPPORT FROM ADOBE.

2. PIRATED SOFTWARE CAN HARM YOUR PERSONAL COMPUTER / FILES.

3. DONT LET THOSE FOLKS TAKE ADVANTAGES OF YOU BUY BY SELLING YOU ADOBE SOFTWARE THAT ARE NOT GENUINE SOFTWARE.

4. DONT THINK OF THE PRICE ( pirated softwareS are usually much cheaper than of genuine softwareS) INSTEAD  THINK OF  THE  "CONSEQUENCES"

5. IN SHORT " THINK FIRST BEFORE YOU DO IT".

I posted previously to this thread.

I paid £360 for CS3 and I cannot recall where I got it from, perhaps Ebay or maybe even some website but I made the assumption that "because" the price represented a comparison to the real thing ( only a little cheaper ) that it was the real thing. I would of also checked for credentials if it was from Ebay such as how long the seller had been trading and the feedback from previous customers buying the same product. I am all too familiar with pirated versions of software sold on Ebay but I can only relate to years ago when there were many people selling obvious copies of Photoshop and silly  prices so you KNEW you were looking at a copy of Photoshop and not the original version.\

Again, as I had paid slightly less than the then " going rate " for CS3 I assumed it must of been authentic.

When it arrived I cannot tell you how authentic is looked. The sealed case, the documentation, even the extra goodies and tutorial disc was in there and the discs themselves were perfect. It also had all of Adobes logos and user manual enclosed too as well as the activation code on the sticker at the back of the case.

I installed it with ease, put the serial key in to activate it and everything seemed fine.

I think I even tried to register it at Adobe but must of thought there was an error on Adobes page and gave up.

12 months down the line and Bridge started crashing, Adobe Help kept loading triggered by random actions etc so I went to Adobe to ask why I wasnt getting update patches, but I think you need to register your product before they respond so I tried but the site kept saying I had entered the wrong serial key in and to activate it manually by contacting Adobe.

So I wrote to them from the support section on the main site and included my serial key.

You can only imagine my shock and anger when they wrote back informing me that the serial I had provided was not valid.

I was and AM livid that I paid a few hundred pounds for something that was normally sold for £25. Had I wanted a copied version I would and could of paid a lot less.

Its reverse psychology at its best.

I went back to my old PS7

So I bought an iMac recently and of course needed a mac version of Photoshop and this time took NO chances and bought from Adobe directly.

The exact same thing happened with some UGG boots that I paid £100 for over 2 years ago. I bought some new ones on Ebay for £45 thinking it was steal then when they arrived it was clear they were fakes. Not only that, but the paid I paid £100 for 2 years previous were also fakes I just didnt know it.

I did some research about UGG boots and apparently 99% of people selling UGG boots on Ebay are selling fake copies either knowingly or not.

So I gave the £45 pair to my Mum and paid £150 for a genuine pair direct from the manufacturers.

Its just not worth the very high risk of buying bargain items, it may cost more but at least you know your getting the real thing.

Hi,

Just a word about my experience. I bought a copy of CS2 about 6 years ago from a computer fair in England. It was, from recolection about 30-40% cheaper than from Adobe. This software has run on my computer for that Length of time without a hitch, until 4days ago my computer suffered a melt down with a suspected Virus. I have managed to get the computer running in a fashion and am still awaiting MS to contact me to sort it out properly.

Now CS2 will not work, the serial number is not valid, How after about 6 years of faultless running can Adobe now say the software is not legitimate. I rang Adobe to complain but you cannot get passed 1st base, the person on the end of the phone was polite but just kept repeating, "I can't help you further sir".

I am really p****d off with Adobe, why can't they tell immediately wether the software is counterfeit or not? It surely is not too much to ask, how can it pass then fail later, in my opinion Adobe should register any software which passes their tests initially, as to later, in my case much later, disable the software makes it vitually impossible to bring the culprits to justice and enable the duped people to get some recompense. It is no good just saying you should have bought from Adobe. In my opinion Adobe MUST have the technology to spot fake copies immediately, if not they should have. I also don't understand how after 6 years Adobe can then stop my copy from working.

Regards,

Dave

So, in summary, it's Adobe fault you didn't do a better job of checking the legitimacy of your purchase?

Tell us...if you bought a stolen car how long would it be before you were off the hook and got to keep it? How about counterfeit money?

It's been said over and over...anything more than 10% difference from list price should set off an alarm. You tried to beat the system and got some time out of it. Chalk it up to experience and buy a copy of CS5 when it ships...from an authorized retailer. BTW, CS2 was released 5 years ago so you certainly didn't buy it 6 years ago.

My feeling is that you did buy a ligit copy. However, whoever sold it to you opened the box, wrote down the serial number, re-shrinked wrapped the box and sold it to you. Then this person used this serial number on hacked versions or sold it to someone. So when your computer went off the deep end and you tried to reload the software the serial number was flagged in the authentication servers as being used too many times.

Anybody with a hair dryer and shrinkwrap can re-shrinkwrap a box. How would you know the box was re-shrinkwrapped? Also how would you trust a person not to have copied the serial number before he sold the software to you? It was just a matter of time before the serial number server caught up with your serial number.
