But they are not.
I am having some really funky problems with CS4 and the only way I know of perhaps correcting them is to uninstall and reinstall.
My problem: The program will not uninstall because it says Bridge and Updater are open. But they are not.
Please help!
Liz
When you installed your saved files from the backup did you also install CS4 from that or did you install from the PS CS4 disk?
If you ran from the backup I think the install was botched.
What I would do is deactivate CS4. Choose to deactivate as if your installing onto another computer. Then remove CS4 and re-install. Reinstall the software as Admin. When you insert the disk don't run it. Open to explore and look for the photoshop file. in that file look for the .exe file. Right click on that and

You are welcome.
In my trials, I found deactivation of Adobe products not necessary if no HW changes are happening. Even uninstalling and re-installing the OS doesn't mess with it, but I suppose better safe than sorry!
Liz, looks like you are going to get this licked! From my pov, I would not use XP media center and do only XP. Later down the pike, (as in monitor cal) Media Center doesn't like X-Rite products and they are pretty established in that dept. If you are strictly using the computer for graphics, surfign and the like but not TV HiDef movies etc leave media center alone.
Just my 2c worth after watching my neighbor's problems. It took several attempts on his part to make Media Center work, then he abandoned it (Finally!)

I agree with you about not deactivating. However, since she is already having massive problems it is best to go the better safe then sorry route. That way something else is ruled out too.
Plus activating and deactivating are no longer counted like they were in the recent past. Yaaaaaa

I am an semi-professional photographer who also likes to do photoshopping. There are sites in Flickr that focus on photoshop contests and I also like some of the off-Flickr photoshop sites (Ex. Freaking News, Worth1000, Choppix).
I am not into videos at all except for rare downloads from my camera.
I tell you what guys, if I cannot get CS4 to work on this computer, I will seriously put some thought into buying a new one altogether. I eat and breath photos/photoshop on a daily basis. Going 'without' CS4 is not an option.
I gotta know for sure it is my computer that is the problem, not CS4.
Will be back to get rid of CS4 and try to reinstall it after dinner and a drink to buffer my nerves/courage. This is wearing me out.

Hang in there!! Your doing great. A lot of people would have tossed the computer across the room by now.

A new one would likely come with Win7, which is a good option for CS4, but it has to be well setup.
At this point, I really wish I live close enough to actually work on the box myself.
I'd make a horrible CS person, but just hand me the box....!

BTW, Dave, I checked out scannow myself, having not heard of it until your post. Impressive. I ran the test, it asked for the CD so I decided to copy the file to my HD and did the registry changes. It ran fine.

Took CS4 off the computer.
Thought that Adobe clean script would be easy, but I hit a question mark.
I used the windows program for clean.
I ended up with a folder named "dist".
I double clicked on it to open. There was a white box, blue line on top with cS4installerdatabaseulity.exe. Just to the right was another item, a page with two dial things, and when I clicked on it ..... well..
You have to guide me through this part of the journey. I may have already done it wrong.
EDIT: Printed out instructions that were on the page. Back with progress report soon.
EDIT #2: I am lost with this. Need help. Do I right click on the white/blue top box?? It asks me to run program..... But I see nothing about levels of cleaning coming up.... would this show up after right click? I need to be sure 100% to click on this - that it is the right thing. The box/blue is a file....??

So far that's right.
You should also have an AdobeCS4CleanReadme.pdf. The instructions are there and well done. Follow them meticulously. It works.

In the dist folder there is a readme PDF file that tells you how to run the download. That is what you opened up when you mentioned instructions?
The .exe file you want to run is called CS4InstallerDatabaseUtility.exe You have to right click on that and run as Admin. But do read the AdobeCS4CleanReadme.pdf for step by step instructions. When you get to the part where you enter a 1 or a 2, enter 3 as 3 will clean it deeper.

I tried to attach a screen shot (of items in DIST folder) but the computer stalled out on me. I did not have to completely get out of it to come back here but I had to close out of Windows. EDIT: I tried just now (9:30 AM) to download an image from the web, but after I opened the photo, right click to save, the box opens up, I was able to name the image, but then it stalled. Was able to get out it by going to another web site, so did not have to turn off computer.
So without CS4, it did that. I do realize it did that without that final step with clearing computer of the final remnants of those CS4 files, but I thought it was interesting that it would happen.
Once I run all of the programs to get rid of CS4 (after your help), I need to skirt around the computer like I just did to see if the program stalls out again, prior to putting back in CS4, because if CS4 is completely off of the computer, and it stalls -- it is not CS4.
I would not be insulted if you would do a screen shot and show me exactly what to click, how to click etc etc. The instructions are not that good for someone like me who is running into this wall.
Oh, and, GOOD MORNING!
EDIT: I did not seen any errors on the events page this a.m. after I got hung up with the above. But yesterday, I have a whole lot (LOT) of this error, and only this error under applications before I deleted CS4: Adobe Version Cue CS3 error. Red circle, white cross.
Maybe I need to take CS3 off the computer too and reinstall?? IF, and I say IF, this is a HP problem not an Adobe problem, there are a lot of posts here related to my issue, but would it be possible for one of you to go to the HP site, and summarize it in some way, using geek-speak, so that the HP people would not have to wade through my ramblings??? Or is that a no-no to even mention to you?? I can go there and link to this discussion, but I had to ask.
This is what the CS3 cue error reads:
The description for Event ID ( 3 ) in Source ( Adobe Version Cue CS3 ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: AssetServicesCS3, class vcfoundation::base::VCIllegalState: IVCPipeServer already closed
Trace: (null).

Take it all off (the programs!).
It is sounding more and more that conflicts abound and we seem to be fighting a rear guard action. I would uninstall anything Adobe at the moment, even Acrobat and start from scratch. Use the Cleaners for both CS3 and CS4 (Note to Dave: do you know if CS4 cleaner also does CS3? If so, it may shorten the procedure).
I still feel going to XP Pro and not Media Center needs to be done as well. If you do so, then all starts afresh and no cleaners need to be used.

I am glad events have happened as they had, because I would have wasted time installing CS4 and not resolved the issues.
I still need baby step instructions on cleanup, as before in prior note. A screen shot is needed for me at this point.
The XP/media thing ---- I need to be told how to do that.
So, in summary, give me a plan with step by step instructions to do this........ which I cannot get to until I get done with my day job.
First step....
1. Use CS4 cleaner. (and follow instructions in post #3).
2. Uninstall CS3 (with or without cleaner).
3. Uninstall CS2.
4. Do that XP/Media thing?? (and how)
5. ??
6. ??

Jeepers, I suspect that the operating system needs to be reloaded at the least. Could be over heating too.
This is one of those where I rather be sitting in front of this computer with my testing software and such.
Is this HP machine still under warranty with maybe a extended warranty?
Have you ever seen a blue screen and had to reboot to get rid of it lately?
Overheating? Clean out the dust bunnies that sometimes grow around areas that need to be cooled?
The hard drive: Does it make a faint tic tic tic sound every once in a while? Constant every 2 or 3 seconds?
I agree with hudechrome that we have come to a point where the computer proved that it is not a CS4 issue. Going to the HP site may not help much because we have already done a lot more then what they have to offer troubleshootingwise.
There is a scan disk for errors that you can try. It is very simple to use (if your computer does not lock up). Not as accurate as some software and very basic but will tell you if your hard drive has bad sectors and attempt recovery. Here is step by step.

Give the scandisk a try and let us know the results and if it found anything.

If you lived within 100 miles, I would be at your door this weekend! LOL. But we know that is not the case.
Will run that scan thing after the day job. 2:00 p.m. or so.
Warranty? The only kind of warranty I have that would be pertinent would be the 30 day warranty from Big Box store - they have a 30 day guarantee.
And I would hate hate hate hate hate to take it there. They do have other stores in the area I could use, but if I took it there, I would have to miss work from my real job, and I already had to do that the first 2 weeks of the year because of BB's delays.
I need a live, warm Geek body to help me. Cannot use prior Geek since I now know he was 'defective.' (Though I luved his Woodstock stories.)
No Blue Screen of Death since computer came back.
Overheating? It was just at BB store. I would imagine they would have cleaned it.
Ticking? I will have to pay attention to that, but off the hand, I have not recognized that as happening continuously. I always have TV on.
EDIT AGAIN: Do you guys ever use the "123meeting" ???????? I mention that because when I have an issue with a work-related program, I call up the computer guy that works for my employer, and he uses 123 meeting.com and he has full access to my computer over the internet.
Do you know of an on-line Geek I could connect up with who would do this?? I imagine it is a no-no for Adobe to even suggest they could/would do this.

Have you visited the HP website and downloaded the drivers for your computer after BB did their thing or did BB do that for you? Video card drivers?
If you can please right click my computer and then click on device manager. Look at disk drives and expand that. It should list what hard drive is installed. Can you post that. I want to look it up and see if the manufacturer offers a hard drive testing software. If I can locate that I can give you a link that you can go to and download and run the sfotware.
Better yet. Give me the name and model number of the computer, if you don't mind, so I can go to the HP website and check things out.

I know Norton has something like that. When I was over at my friends house ( after I got her daughters computer up and running ) the mom called Norton and they got on line with her computer, redownloaded and installed the Norton software and life was good. I don't think Adobe offers that. Was not offered when I had problems loading PS CS4 last year. I was left on my own to figure it out.

Here is a link to update the HP software. It is the update utility to scan your computer and to find outdated drivers or hardware that needs a software update. If something is found, download and update. If not then let us know.
I will be adding stuff to this post as I find it but this is a good start to try first.![]()

Ya, the HP site is not much help. nothing in the forums and their troubleshooting area is generic at best.
When you get a chance can you look in Device Manager and tell me what video card is listed. I think it is nvidia but the HP site had no model number listed. The best driver they had listed was in 2006. but the nvidia site might have a better driver listed. It will be listed under Display adapters.
