But they are not.
I am having some really funky problems with CS4 and the only way I know of perhaps correcting them is to uninstall and reinstall.
My problem: The program will not uninstall because it says Bridge and Updater are open. But they are not.
Please help!

When you installed your saved files from the backup did you also install CS4 from that or did you install from the PS CS4 disk?
If you ran from the backup I think the install was botched.
What I would do is deactivate CS4. Choose to deactivate as if your installing onto another computer. Then remove CS4 and re-install. Reinstall the software as Admin. When you insert the disk don't run it. Open to explore and look for the photoshop file. in that file look for the .exe file. Right click on that and

Sweet.
Go to this link and download and install these drivers. This is for XP 32 bit and not 64 bit. Make sure you un-install the old drivers, reboot, install the new drivers, reboot.

It works well. But I am wondering how well it works on a system that has been updated to SP3 (XP) but only have a disk for XP SP1. Same with Vista. I don't think Windows 7 would be effected as it is still a new OS without many changes.
Sorry, I missed your response. I didn't see it until now.![]()

BTW, Dave, I checked out scannow myself, having not heard of it until your post. Impressive. I ran the test, it asked for the CD so I decided to copy the file to my HD and did the registry changes. It ran fine.

I must have done something wrong, or whatever, but first things first:
I downloaded it. The program was running smoothly but seemed to stop, and then this prompt came up,
NVIDIA Control Panel could not be installed which may affect functionality. The most recent driver will now be restored.

The computer turned off and when it came on, the settings are off. The view of what is on the screen now is at the largest possible size,. When I went back in to reset it back to the appearance that I had before, it would not allow me to make the change.
So, I have a new problem at the moment with the screen appearance. Everything is HUGE.

Right click on the desktop. Look for display settings. Click on display settings and adjust the resolution to high, hit appy, then ok.

I got it back already. There was a box to click about your desktop was reconfigured... because I did not click on it right away, the computer took me away from the page and back to front screen.
so, every okay again as far as that goes.

That's good. Hard to tell why the Nvidia control panel refused to install.
There are other things to try and update like C++, DirectX and .NET. However, I do not think the Nvidia control panel uses .NET
However, thinking the windows install is botched (Lawrence too) I don't want to totally mess things up.

I ran it to see how it works and saw no problems, but then the re-installation of XP is only a couple of moths old. My DVD has SP2 on it so only 3 would be a worry, although it is pretty big.
Worst case would be to re-install SP3.
Does this tool work on Win7, or is there a Win7 version?
Concerning the nVidia update, I had problems with that update on my 7300LE with CS3 but not CS4. I had to roll it back to run on XP/CS3. Win7 has it's own version (64 bit) and seems ok.

Hmmm, maybe build ya a new computer! (Ooops! not suppposed to advertise here! )
Seriously, I know that if your box showed up here, I would offload all your files, wipe the drive clean and start over. I've done this (and build and configure hardware) in the hundreds at a very large cpu manufacturer. Every time we did a new suite of tests, even the exact same ones again, this was SOP. Wipe and re-install. (W-RI) (Just what the world needs! Another acronym!)

What should I do next??? Look for a local geek and hope I do better than the first time?
Or is my computer old enough to justify forgetting that route, putting $$$$ into it, and just buying a new computer??
$300 to BB plus $75 to Geek plus $30 to HP for system disks = Heartache.

You might want to look around. Craigslist can be a can of worms to be sure, but I don't know anything else save
the phone book. There should also be word of mouth networking as well.Perhaps HP has a list of locally approved shops.
What is your computer's age? If it has a 6 series nVida card, it's not that new.

I think we bought it in 2006 or 2007.

Yes, but it has to be run at a elevated command prompt in Windows 7.

Been up since 5:30AM PST. Gotta take a nap.
But the machine is probably on the edges of being legacy, two clicks from ancient! It's about the same age of the machine I replaced in Dec 2009.

What computer do you have now???
BTW, if you want to make any recommendations, I think you can see my email via this web site. If not, if you go to Flickr and look up my name there, Doxieone, I am accessible through there.
I need some guidance as to what to replace this one, because my husband will not be a happy camper if, after all the $$$ I have put into repairs, I come up and say I need to replace it anyway.
But things happen, and ya gotta move on. For the amount of time and usage I get out of a computer, I need a good one, not a used-to-be-good-one.
I did, by the way, write an email to a local computer repair company that has apparently good reputation and all of that. I sent an inquiry as to what they would charge to come to the house and repair it.

So it sounds like we are calling the baby ugly and your looking in to buying a new computer.
I see Lawrence sent a e-mail so that is good too. He is a geeky type so he will get you going in the right direction.
As for the hubban understanding: He will just have to get over the fact you need a new computer.![]()

Good Morning! Hudechrome provided some excellent info as to what to look for in next computer.
Husband is doing a drive by at BB. He accepted the fact that I need a new computer a lot better than I thought he would. Maybe it is also because he will get this computer which is a better desktop than the one he has - which is 2 years older than mine. It runs really slow.
If it was not for the photoshop issue, I could live with this one but...
I looked up your name in Facebook and could not get it to put in your state - search engine accepts cities only apparently. There are over 500 people with your name. You've got a lot of clones. LOL.

Good morning to you too.
Since your getting a new computer you will have time to figure out your old one or re-install the Operating System it (if that will fix it). Your husband might want to keep his around just in case.
You made the right decision. Glad Lawrence got you in the right direction.
I live in Canton, MI so that should narrow it down.

Whatever we did to the computer yesterday has dealt me another major setback.
Before yesterday, at least I could do CS3 or PS ELements 8 that I also have.
Today, the computer is not allowing me to do anything photoshop wise on any program.
I have one set of photos I really wanted to work on, and the computer will not allow it. I tried to download them on a disk so I could use my husband's computer, and I cannot download to a disk.
SOS in Charlotte.
EDIT: What happens, like right now with PS Elements 8, I can get the computer to open up the program. But then it completely busies itself out, and will not download the photos into the program.
Google works. email works. Anything that involves opening a file does not.
Used tried Bridge CS3 and it would not open pictures. I will have to turn off computer (again) to see this time if going to Bridge first works.
EDIT: I can see photos in bridge, but when I double click, the image will not open up.
