Uninstall CS4 not working because Bridge/Updater 'open'

New Here ,
Feb 04, 2010 Feb 04, 2010

But they are not.

I am having some really funky problems with CS4 and the only way I know of perhaps correcting them is to uninstall and reinstall.

My problem:  The program will not uninstall because it says Bridge and Updater are open.   But they are not.

Please help!

Liz

When you installed your saved files from the backup did you also install CS4 from that or did you install from the PS CS4 disk?

If you ran from the backup I think the install was botched.

What I would do is deactivate CS4. Choose to deactivate as if your installing onto another computer. Then remove CS4 and re-install. Reinstall the software as Admin. When you insert the disk don't run it. Open to explore and look for the photoshop file. in that file look for the .exe file. Right click on that and

Right click on any photo. Click open with. CS3 and a bunch of other options should be listed. Choose CS3. That should make it the default program (except for bridge that opens everything). If the program, like CS3, is not listed then choose default program and look for CS3 then select.

Hudechrome gave me some great info about a new computer to replace this one.  But I have had to make a decision to go another route.

I am in emergency mode now.  I have to have a new computer and I cannot wait.  In fact, my husband is going to BB as I type this.  He went this a.m. to look at what they have and, now, because of my second mini-meltdown of the day, the poor guy is out again but this time to buy it.

There is a 30 day waranty with BB regarding their work.  That ends tomorrow.  Time flies when you are having no fun.

This computer is going to the shop plain and simple and on BB's time.  I will have a new computer by the end of the day.

Again, appreciate what you and Hudechrome have attempted with this, but it is 100% time to go full circle by taking computer back to BB, and me getting a new computer, too.  I will not mention (at all) that I had had a geek work on it as I am afraid their motto would be it is no longer covered.  So that is one fly in the ointment I have to work around.

So in a way, it is working out better for me....  But it has been a hell of a ride.

Well I did post this before the Adobe forums closed me out and would not let me post. This forum software has been a pain, for me in the last 2 days. Anyways, here is the step by step link:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307859

If you took it back to BB they would just reload the Operating System.

Your welcome on the help.

It is the forum software that boots people out. It happens all the time.

You can try what I wrote for you but I still think a new computer is in order. There is some weird goings on with that computer anyways.

Good morning

Yes, the install could be corrupt.

I don't see why not downloading the trial but I would try the disk again first. As long as you de-activate CS4 first and choose the option that you are installing it on another machine. Then do post number 3 all over again. I would also, after the removal of CS4, do a search on your hard drive to ensure all folders are removed.

The trial will place a folder on your desk top with 2 files in it. One is the .exe file that you choose to run as Admin. If this works and everything is ok, I would burn a copy of that downloaded folder to a DVD.

Good morning Dave.

Will do what you suggested later today.  How do I deactivate the program??  Is that a prompt that comes up?

Hi,

When you open CS4 look at the top where it reads Help. Click on Help and Click on Deactivate. Put a check mark in Erase my serial number from this computer after deactivation completes. Let it run its course and then CS4 window will close. Then go to control Panel and remove the software from Uninstall a program.

I have a new computer!!  No problemo with CS4.

- - - - - - - - - -

Kevin and I took the old computer to BB on Saturday.  They ran a scan in safe mode that was kicked out by the computer.  They did a normal scan.  Afterwards, BB Guy, I will call Bob, said computer needed diagnostics work - hardware issue.

Sunday - no call.

Monday - no call.

Tuesday - no call.

Wednesday - I was fed up.  10:45 a.m. I drive over there and Bob is the guy behind the counter.  Right away he had this look of guilt, as in, he should have called me.

I ask if my computer is ready.  He said, I kid you not, did you bring the Photoshop disk with you???  I said no one had called me and why would I walk back into the store with that in my hand??  Again more guilt on his face.

He said there is no malware, no hardware issue.  It had to be Photoshop.  Need to take PS off and reinstall.  I said I could do that myself.  So I took computer with the last thing being said by BB it was photoshop issue.

Last night I took off CS3 and CS2.  This is supposed to be my husband's computer.  He is leery of it.

So, tonight when he is out of the house at work, I will go into his office and set it up.  Will move all info from old computer to external drive.  Will disconnect husband's computer which he will not do - he thinks my computer is bad news --- but after $400 of repairs and such, he's going to use it if it kills me because other than the CS4 issue (at least the first stage of it), the computer was running fine.

Kevin's computer is ancient and I know he will enjoy my computer.  At least that is my plan.  Right now on his old computer he has been working with Elements 3 - that is how old the computer is.  I have Elemenhts 8 still remaining on my computer - I did not take it off, and am hoping computer issues will be resolved by CS3 and CS2 (and CS4 already) being off the computer and it will tolerate Elements 8.

Tonight may be able to give update of the update, but just wanted you guys to know BB blames PS.

BB can say what they want but I am still standing by with the computer itself is having issues. Plus BB knows nothing about installing CS4 the proper way and would have borked the install. A fresh install of Windows XP would not hurt either.

Walk me through the steps you would take if you were here, including directing me to prior posts already in this string so that you do not have to repeat info. I had problems with some of those steps earlier.

Installing new WIndows - you will have to help me with that. If I can do that myself and then add PS Elements to computer I will.

You pretty well know the drill, liz. You are doing it with your hubby's computer!

Now do the same thing to yours. namely download all important(and maybe not so important!) files to the external. Get a copy of XP. It still should be available (I know, I know. You have media center. Don't go there!)

Stick the dvd in the dvd drive and follow instructions. Be sure to let it format the drive. When it is done. install photoshop first. Don't even install the A/V. Take it off line (unplug the internet connection) then install CS3,4.. After you are satisfied, install the A/V of your choice (the MS version is pretty good and it is free) then connect to the internet to activate.

You should be fine. If not it's a HW issue for sure.

Kevin is happy with his old computer.  He feels mine is jinxed and he wants nothing to do with it.

We are going to set it up in the family room this morning.  I will try to use Photoshop Elements 8 in there to see if I can work on an image.  Will work on that and other stuff on computer to see if it locks up like it did.  Hardware problem is still a good probability Dave thinks.

Back later today with update.

Thanks for your post!!!!!

Lawrence already wrote what you should do if your installing XP fresh so to avoid confusion I won't add to it. Or do you want step by step for installing PS CS4?

Get a copy of XP???  Sorry, you gotta go one more step with me on that - Download it from the web to a disk and then install ???  (Use my new computer for this?)

Stick the dvd in the dvd drive and follow instructions. Be sure to let it format the drive. When it is done. install photoshop first. Don't even install the A/V.

A/V = Antivirus???  The computer has a fresh 2010 Norton just put on it within the past month - Kevin did that after computer got back.

Take it off line (unplug the internet connection) then install CS3,4.. After you are satisfied, install the A/V of your choice (the MS version is pretty good and it is free) then connect to the internet to activate.

If you wipe the drive, you will delete the A/V automatically.

Obtaining a valid copy of XP should not be all that difficult, although with Win7 now in production, supplies will dwindle.

You get it by spending money, unfortunately. You may also be able to use another person's copy and run it as a 30 day trial, but maybe not any more . Of course, if it runs well, you will be faced with still another uninstall reinstall of all the programs and OS, but hey, that's the price of admission.

You might try to see if BB will put a copy of XP on the computer. Just XP nothing else. Be sure that it has SP3 as well. Ask for a 30 day or even 15 day trial. It's long enough to determine if the HW is robust enough to warrant continuing. Get it home and install programs and utilities  as I have indicated. Then run it.

Honestly, I would simply abandon the box and get a new one, but that's me.

Re: Uninstall CS4 not working because Bridge/Updater 'open'

I am beginning to wonder when the operating system was reloaded after the virus was removed that the system restore points and the shadow copies were not deleted first. Also system restore should have been turned off before virus removal. When you had the virus did you have the same error symptoms as you see now?  NOPE.

Did the computer come with a Windows XP disk or did you make back up disk for the operating system?  This is another part of my trial of fire with BB.  After having my computer 2 weeks, they called to say they needed to do a complete reboot.  Did I have disks?? No.  I had to order them from HP.  So, long answer to your inquiry: I have backup disks.

You can try this command SCF /SCANNOW. But you will need a XP install disk if it asks you for one. This is a system file checker. Here is a link if you wish to do that. But if you don't have the disks then it may not work.

http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html  I LOOKED AT THIS.... Looks a bit involved.   This looks... scary for me.

Now if you don't have the XP CD then when it asks you for the disk just type in C:\386

This should work. But sometimes this folder might be located on the backup partition on the Disk so you will have to see if there is a backup still on your hard drive.

What I am thinking is that BB was suggesting to upgrade to Windows 7. To me a fresh install of XP is in order instead of spending more time trying to fix it. However if your computer can support windows 7 then I would suggest maybe giving Windows 7 some thought. Here is the website for the upgrade advisor.  WILL TRY.

THANKS for continued responses.   will try to do what I can do and get back to you.  dunno if I can do that first program....

Sorry but I have been clicking on layers under Window every time I get into the program.   And everytime I leave the program

and return, I have to do the whole process all over again.

I opened CS4.

I opened up an image in photoshop.  Then went to Flickr to download an image.  The computer stalled out on me.  Would not allow me to do it so I had to do  control/alt/delete to get away from the page.

When I went back to CS4, I opened the files again, and this time instead of seeing the photos there, as they should be, many of them were just the token picture symbol that is part of the program, not the image.  When I double clicked on the symbol photo, of course I cannot access the image.

I have errors in the event monitor from today and yesterday that include some of the same I have already seen:

Adobe Version Cue Cs3

Media Center Extender

Removable storage server error

The fact that I cannot maintain my layers panel when I get out of the program and back in is, to me, an important symptom of what is wrong with the program/my computer.  Something that simple should be working as I know it can.

Note:  After I had the lock up above, I closed CS4.  I just reopened it, and it is working okay.  Went to FLickr again and it allowed me to download photo.

Will post anymore problems as they come up.  Right now, everything is okay again. Edit:  Had another problem 2 minutes later.   Instead of posting like I just did, I am going to work a good hour with the program and come back with an update.

EDIT:  3:15 p.m.   I ended up having to turn off the computer completely.  Reason: I could not get CS4 to turn on again. So rebooted and was able to get it open again.

Errors in Event Monitor:

Media Center Extender Warning   (red circle)  2:56:27 pm

Warning:  Userenv (yellow triangle)   2:53.15  pm

                                           and     2:53.12 pm

Removeable storage server error.(system event) -  Removable storage   2:56.55 pm

Service Control Manager error   8:03 a.m. this morning

EDIT: 3:30 pm   Okay, CS4 will open very quickly - in seconds.  But when I go to open a photo from the file, only the top 1/5 of photos there are fully open - the rest are in a state of "to be loaded".  After doing this, I then cannot work with CS4 at all.  It stalls out again.  I will try to work with CS3 and avoid CS4 for now.

EDIT:  4:00 p.m.  Per the usual routine, CS3 works fine.  The type of errors I see in CS4 I do not see in CS3.

There was that issue of the computer not reading "CS3 cue" that could be related to this...... ?????  If you can fix cue, maybe the rest of it will fall in line.
