But they are not.
I am having some really funky problems with CS4 and the only way I know of perhaps correcting them is to uninstall and reinstall.
My problem: The program will not uninstall because it says Bridge and Updater are open. But they are not.
Please help!

When you installed your saved files from the backup did you also install CS4 from that or did you install from the PS CS4 disk?
If you ran from the backup I think the install was botched.
What I would do is deactivate CS4. Choose to deactivate as if your installing onto another computer. Then remove CS4 and re-install. Reinstall the software as Admin. When you insert the disk don't run it. Open to explore and look for the photoshop file. in that file look for the .exe file. Right click on that and

No, there were no CD's with the driver
Will try your steps. right back.
I did format it when I bought it.
EDIT: Could not find driver tab. There were general, autoplay, toosl, hardware/share.
When I left clicked on computer (My computer) I did not readily see a device manager.
Am using my computer for work right now. Will work on this issue after I do my 'real' job'.
Sorry you have to baby step me through so much with this. I do not know a lot about computers. As mentioned, I did format harddrive when I first installed it, and as far as I knew, I had done it correctly.
I have a lot (lot) of photos on my harddrive. To put them on a DVD would entail at least 40 DVD's.

When you do get that new computer make sure you run Windows update before you install PS CS4.
Don't forget to de-activate the Photoshop on the old computer.
I am sure you will get Windows 7 so there are a few things you need to do before you install CS4.
Turnoff any anti-virus software. Turnoff windows defender. You can leave UAC on.
When you put the CS4 Disk in you need to run it as Admin. When you insert the disk don't run it and just open to explore. Look for the PS CS4 folder and inside that folder you will see the .exe file. Right click on that file and select run as Admin. The install process will start and will take a while.
Around 90 percent complete the install will look like it stopped. This is normal and may take 10 to 15 mins. So don't worry.
After install is complete reboot the computer. After reboot you will have to run CS4 as Admin. If you are getting a 64 bit machine go to start, All Programs and look for PS CS4 64 bit. Should be near the top. Right click on PS CS4 64 bit, choose properties, compatibility and then check Run as Administrator. Click Apply then OK to close. Then click on PS CS4 64 bit, the UAC window will pop up, click continue and PS CS4 will start. Then you need to update CS4.
If your machine is 32 bit then you will have only PS CS4 32 bit showing. 64 bit machine will have both 32 bit and 64 bit PS CS4 listed. That is normal.
You might want to defrag the hard drive too. May be a new computer but with all the updates the hard drive could use a defrag to speed things up.

Thanks for this. Will print it out.
Still will take computer to Best Buy, though after dr appt. I need another
meltdown, but this time will have a non-husband audience. Lookout BB, I'm
heading your way! LOL.
And I want it out of my sight. Literally. If there was a way to torture
it, the way it has tortured me, I would be at it right now.
Waterboarding... umm....

Snow arrived and I did not make it to the BB.
Do you think that it is possible my external drive is infected with
anything? How can I determine that before connecting to new computer?

The external hard drive could be infected depending on the virus. I would not hook it up to the new computer if you think there is a possibility. I am not really up to speed on detecting or removing a virus from a external drive.

I will take them both to BB. Will not attach external drive until I know
for sure it is clean.
Thanks again for continued help. I could not find you on FB even with your
city. If you want to find me, I am Liz Kearley at Charlotte NC.

Your welcome.
I just never had to deal with a external hard drive that is suspect. If it were mine then yes I would attempt it but with someone elses, with all that data on it, then no. Lawrence or someone else on here might have run into that situation before that could help.
I found you and sent a request.

Well, your virus program should offer to sweep that drive. Plug it in, turn on the AV click the drive letter for that drive and do a sweep.Just don'r actually open anything on that drive until it is swept.
You may lose some data if there is a virus, but then, what's the options?
Is your 30 days over now? Can you take in tomorrow, snow willing?
Oh, I am also on Facebook, but not a big contributor.

Hi!
Yes, I double checked on it earlier and the scan that is going on right now
is doing all disks. But since I got home with computer from shop, my
husband put new Norton on the computer and it has been checking computer
regularly.
The 'virus' word scared me today because that computer repair company I
wrote to said I likely had a Trojan in the system still.
I had come to the point where I felt it was a windows issue, not
virus-related, so that little email threw me for a loop a little today, too.
We have 2-3 inches of snow right now, probably not more than that by
tomorrow, so they said. In any rate, temp to be in 40's tomorrow so roads
should be clear by afternoon, and off to BB I will go.

If you read all the posts you will see that if you have the same exact problem the corrective is to buy a new computer. Between the post comments it is either Windows XP media edition that is flaky or a hardware issue or a combo of both. To me the problem mimics a possible impending hard drive death in the making. But the problem could also be bulging capactor caps on the motherboard too that raises all sorts of heck.
Sometimes the baby has to be called ugly and move on. Now the OP has a new computer, can take the time on the older computer to nuke the hard drive, reload XP Media edition to see if that helps and maybe use it in another room as a backup. But windows XP media editon is not that great of a stable OS so we shall see.

Hmm, I didn't notice the "new computer" mention until I want back to look.
I thought she was trying to get the old one to still work.
So, liz, what's your setup? Did you buy a new computer? If so, belay my last set of instructions and get back with an update.

Hi... I should have sent you an email so that you would have realized it easier that I had new computer.
Yes, have new computer, but am still trying to work out the kinks with the old computer, so your continued input was still valuable. BUT, at this point, I am just going to let the computer be and not try to do installations of XP because, frankly, it scares me and I do not want to spend $$$ on it anymore. And do not want to take it back to BB for them to install XP. Am tired of dealing with BB in any shape or form.
IN SUMMARY: New computer enables me to do whatever I need to do, photoshop, work, etc etc. No PS issues.
BUT.... old computer is still defective. I have it running in our family room. It still is funky with things like downloading images from Google - it will take 60 seconds to download an image - first image I try to download no problem, but beyond that first image I have issues. Will let it run like it wants to run, until it stops running and then will deal with that issue then. As in trying to do the fixes you have suggested short of spending $$$$ (or BB trip).
My husband does not want to use it as a replacement for his computer. So that is why it is not in his office.
And GET THIS, I was just on my old computer and I tried and tried and tried to get to Adobe forum to post this to you. The computer would stall out for me on Adobe, but I could go everywhere else like Flickr or Google or whatever.... I mean, really now, why did it not like Adobe??
The computer has been on all day and it takes less time for me to walk into my office and turn on new computer and respond to you than to turn off and turn back on the old computer, hoping to somewhat clear up the issue of getting on Adobe forums.
NOTE: Old computer only has PS Elements 8. I took off all CS2, 3 and 4, but did not do a full clean sweep of CS4 because I still do not understand how to do that. I have unzipped files before but this one I cannot understand.

Hi- Good morning!
I bought a ASUS desktop. Can't readily tell you the model, but it came from BB. Midrange price. I needed a computer ASAP. As I mentioned earlier, I thanked you for helping me determine what type of computer would best meet my needs --- I printed it out to keep for the 'next' one. When I lost ability to PS with CS4, I just could not wait any longer.
I did not use the new computer much over the weekend, and I would have responded to your last question earlier ---- except for the fact that Adobe forums stalled BOTH my HP computer (no surprise) but when I was on my husband's computer (laptop) Adobe forums froze there, as well.
I can only respond to Adobe forums on my new computer. I have not been on Forums a lot (except for recent event) so I do not know that is a common problem here. I do know Dave mentioned getting kicked off the forum - I'm not kicked off, I just cannot get on.

Asus has good stuff, so enjoy!
I would definitely install a second HD (if it doesn't already have one), partition it and use the smaller one as scratch. Your PS will thank you! If you can't do it, a competent (maybe even BB!) can do it for you. The scratch size should be at least 20G.
Good luck!

Hey Gang,
I am having issues as well... I downloaded the " free " CS4 30 day version and am trying to unistall it completely. I keep getting " adobe bridge " open and need to close it. But I don't see a way to close it, and suggestions would be great... I am not a programmer but, with the right simple directions I feel I can get it done. I have tried some of the things here but with no luck...
Thx

Thx Zeno that worked.... I was trying to get rid of the net downloaded version and upload from the disk. However now the disk won't load cause it says bridge is not running. I did recheck the process box and bridge.exe is there, is there anything else I need to do ???
Thx ahead
John
