I have been using Photoshop for many years. I do basic editing, and removal of objects. Nothing special. But last week generative fill used to work, and now it doesnt. I would select a telephone line for example and hit generative fill, generate and NOTHING happens. So then i type in remove, still nothing happens. Suggestions to me have been to just use the remove tool and then clean it up. Generative fill was so good I could remove  a branch across a birds face and you couldnt even tell. I cant do that now.

Upon investigation I learned about Rosetta so yes I unchecked the box. Still nothing. As of July 12th, I am updated in all versions from the cloud and desktop. My credits are 95/250 and I am mad i keep losing credits when nothing is working.

I am mac m2.

erik_linton@mac.com Use the Remove tool instead. It even kept the marching ants around your image. Right tool for the right job.

@prwhite55 can you show some examples of before (with selection and layers panel showing) and after? Do you get any kind of error message after it runs? Does it show you the three results in the properties panel after completion?

Same here. I get options, but what used to be a removal of the offending object is not an "enhancement" of the object.

Mac M2 as well.

What are you trying to do?

If you want to remove the bar outright the Selection would seem nonsensical (as it doesn’t cover the segment from vertical »pillar« to vertical »pillar«), if you want to create a hole in the bar Generative Fill seems like a bad fit fo the task (it would need a potentially complex prompt to cummunicate the inention).

In the past I have used generative fill to clean up images like this with great success. I work as a 3d renderer and have used Photoshop for over 20 years. With the arrival of Generative Fill, I was blown away. I could take a site photo from a client and use generative fill to scrub any manner of unwanted elements from it. I have used this feature many times to create backplates for the outside of windows in architectural renders. I simply select the object I want removed, with a bleed around it of a few pixels, presss generative fill, leve the prompt blank and, like magic, the object has been removed and removed. It is a remarkable tool.

I have just noticed that in the last few days it is no longer functioning the same as it has been.

I am attaching an image that shows the selection as originally drawn. In the past this would have worked and I would have an image free of window mullions, but his has changed in the last week.

Thank you. I appreciate the help.

Thank you, Kevin.

The Remove tool is working.

I still do wonder why the behavior of the Generative Fill has changed (for me.)

Once more, thank you for time and help.

erik_linton@mac.com Gen Fill is reliant on the cloud based AI Firefly models. If they update the source (Firefly) it can impact results both postively and negative.

Makes total sense that it would "break" sometimes.

I am sure if I try again in a couple of weeks it will give a better result.

Meanwhile, I am busy with my Remove tool. 🙂

Thank you.

Hi Kevin,

I would love to use the remove tool more instead of generative fill for retouching, because it's good, but it is so slow that it is un-usable in a productive workflow. Retouching skin is impossible, it would take days.

@careaux in the options bar above change the drop down setting to not allow AI for the remove tool.
