AVIF maker/converter: does Photoshop have one?

Community Beginner ,

Our use of Siteimprove app indicates that to raise our SEO numbers, we need to use AVIF files (instead of .jpg, .png or webp) Is anyone else finding Adobe support for this — a maker or converter? What do you think?

There are numerous threads in the forum requesting the same like this one: https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-ideas/p-please-add-avif-file-support/idi-p/122485...

Sounds full of hooey to me. AVIF files have nothing to do with SEO.

AVIF may not have much to do with SEO but it does help to improve overall page scores with Google and Lighthouse metrics.

Which has NOTHING at all to do with Google pushing AVIF over HEIF. Nothing at all. Are they recommending that you provide HEIF as well?

@Lumigraphics why are you shouting? This is a pretty well known practice adopted by many companies including Adobe (using Smart Imaging through Adobe Experience Manager)to serve Webp or AVIF instead of jpg or png for site to improve analytic scores. The OP is simply asking if there is a way to use Photoshop to convert to AVIF. The plugin provided does that.

@Kevin StohlmeyerThat link is no longer valid. Is there a plugin which adds AVIF support for both MacOS and Windows? I am only aware of Windows support (and that plugin has limited support for HDR).

Ultimately, we need to see this natively supported in Photoshop. AVIF is now supported by all relevant web browsers (as of last month MS Edge has native support by default). Appreciate your link below to help consolidate this discussion around that main AVIF thread.

There is native AVIF output in Photoshop now. Still has nothing to do with page quality, despite Google trying to use it to make more money.

@gregbenz that because this post is over a year old and there have been updates since.

@Kevin StohlmeyerAre you aware of an AVIF plugin that supports MacOS?

As for Photoshop Mac - no.

There are numerous stand alone converters out there in the Apple store:

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/avif-converter/id1617089333?mt=12

but you dont really need them - Apple Preview supports AVIF and can convert from there.

A standalone converter would be of limited value over existing Adobe tools (we can already export via LR and ACR, though there is no support for transparency). The goal here is more than just creating an AVIF.  Having native support in PS would support more sophisticated batch operations and actions, integration with plugins, and ultimately should be the basis for advanced HDR exports.

Yeah don't count on all that. Adobe seems to be struggling mightily with output features. Export is still a mess, for example.

GraphicConverter has AVIF support, have you tried that? Also, ImageMagick looks to have AVIF support and is free.
