Change opacity in a gradient using the slider over it, instead of colors

As I asked in this topic, I would very much like to be able to edit the opacity on a gradient instead of managing colors. I wish this was an option, since I do not use multi-colored gradients at all, but I constantly need to change the opacity depending on what the gradient has on top of it on another layer.

If I could switch this, or perhaps use a modifier as Shift, or Alt, it would be so useful for me and I'm sure for many others.

When you work with one color gradients it doesn't make any sense to be able to modify the stops since it is all the same color, and moving the slider does nothing.
