P: PS Restore visible file extensions in the Recent / New File list

Community Beginner ,
Oct 14, 2025 Oct 14, 2025

In the PS home screen grid view, I can't see the file extensions any longer so I don't know wether its a .psd or .jpg or anything. To see the extension, I have to use list view which is no good because the thumnails are way too small. Can you please fix this so I can actually know what files I am looking at? Without the file extension, I am completely in the dark and it's backwards progress in my workflow. PLEASE FIX. Any ideas to fix manually are appreciated. I am using the most recent version of the app on Windows 11. Thanks all.

Hi @MWZ3 not optimal, but if you switch your recent documents to list view it shows the file type below the name.

Photoshop 2026 does not show file extensions in Grid view. It has always done it in the previous versions. How do I get it back to show file extensions? I'm running it on a MacBook

In Grid view... where? Photoshop is not a file browser. Can you maybe post a screenshot?

Photoshop has its own internal file browser, it opens in Grid or List view by default when clicking on the app. It has done that for many years. I am not talking about the grid that you can use when editing images

Maybe you are thinking of Photoshop Elements. The full Photoshop does not have a file browser.

Why should we have to switch views just to see the file type?

File extensions were visible by default in previous versions of Photoshop.

This does not seem like a difficult change.
Please bring back visible file extensions in the default Recent / New File view.

Hi @MWZ3,

Thanks for reporting this. To help narrow this down, could you please share a few details?

  • Exact Photoshop version (Help > About Photoshop)

  • A screenshot of the Home screen in Grid view, where the extensions are missing.

  • Does toggling Home Screen preferences (Edit > Preferences > General > Home Screen) make any difference?

Also, we just released version 27.2, could you please update the app and let us know how it goes.

Regards,

Srishti

Hello Photoshop Team,

In recent versions of Photoshop, file extensions (such as .psd, .jpg, .png) are no longer visible in the Recent / New Filelist by default. This makes it harder to quickly identify file types when opening files.

While switching the view to List View does show the file type, this should not be a required workaround. In previous versions of Photoshop, file extensions were visible by default, and this behavior was much more efficient.

This appears to be a usability regression rather than an improvement. Restoring visible file extensions in the default view—or at least providing a preference to enable them—would significantly improve workflow and file management.

Please consider bringing back this functionality in a future update.

Thank you for your consideration.

PS 27.2 still has the same issue.  File extensions are not shown in home grid view.

Today, I was frustrated that the Opening Screen of Photoshop is no longer showing me the file name extension with the "Recent Files" thumbnails. I may save different file formats/sizes of a particular file, saving one, for instance, as a .PSD, another as a .TIF, and another as a .JPG. As a result, it's important that I see the file extension as well as the name. (Anyone know a fix for that?)

My dilemma is that, while clicking on possible things on the home screen,  I have now lost all my "Recent Files" icons. How do I get back to what used to be the default view on the Home Screen of Photoshop? Attached is a screenshot of what I'm now stuck with.

I'm running Photoshop 26.11.1 on a Windows 11 PC.

Thanks for the help.
