Adobe Photoshop Elements 2024 does not have an auto save option under edit/preferences

Correct answer hatstead

It is a feature that is not incorporated into PSE, any version.

Elements+ has "Hidden Prefs" tool

that includes "Automatically Save Recovery Information" option:

https://elementsplus.net/help/en/hidden-prefs.htm

As with full Photoshop, this feature does not save the original file.

Instead, PSE creates a new file in the backup folder:
C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\24.0\AutoRecover\

Yes.  PSD files are not really compessed like jpegs.  Any compression is lossless.

If you are working for so long on a single image, Glenn's suggestion to save the image as a PSD file makes the most sense.  A simple Ctrl+S after major edits may save a lot of grief.

You're completely right and that's one of those things one realises, right after it's too late! I've always resisted the notion of doing that because of my perception of a loss of image quality with each save. Normally, I don't take very long to edit any image so the problem doesn't arise that often!

In this case it was a lesson hard learnt! So, Ctrl+S it is, every five minutes or so!

Cheers!

I do it everytime I'm working on something:  get a cup of coffee?  Save.  Drink of water? Save.  Go make a sammich? save.

Before my wife retired:  I had office set up to autosave every 2 minutes-- I never bothered to tell her..

Interesting:  Photoshop has autosave.  Seem like it would be kinda simple to add to PSE 2026 when it comes out- Octoberish....

Why Not? I've just spent 20 minutes editing a shot in Elements 2024 and the damn app just froze on me! I couldn't even close it but had to go into Task Manager to end the program! I wouldn't mind if it wasn't for the time wasted and PE just seems to randomly freeze on my but when I look at what's possibly causing it there's no clue! I'm running Windows 11 24H2 on a PC with 32GB of RAM, an Intel 10700K i7 CPU and a RTX 2070 GPU with 8GB of memory. I'm editing 15 maybe 20mb shots and the performance indicator shows that I'm using between only 3 and 4% of memory and about 8% of my CPU!
I suppose it's another way for Adobe to get Elements users to upgrade to their exhorbitant subscription rates!
Surely, Autosave is a basic thing - even Microsoft allows it in their Office/365 software!

Have you added any plugins?

Have you added anything manually, such as brushes?

Autosave:  nothing will probably come of it till the next version release- mid september to late october usually.

If I'm working on anything serious I save it as a psd every single time I step away from the computer.  Why?  My cat mostly likes to play with, and sit on my keyboard.

That is correct.    PSE does not have auto save anywhere.
