Question

How to fix blurry pictures in Elements 13

I am scanning a bunch of 35mm slides from the 1950's-1990's, and some of the older pictures are very blurry. I believe the blurriness was caused by either the camera moving and/or the subject was moving. I am using Elements 13, and I am wondering how to go about fixing these images so they aren't blurry anymore.

Is that possible? Thank you.

Yes, try to improve these old slide scans with the High pass filter. It is my experience, however, that in some instances, the result leaves much to be desired.

Sometimes converting  to a sketch will salvage some.

The blending mode can be altered via the drop-down on a layer in the layers palette (except for the locked Background Layer).

    Hi Karla,

You can try the following steps to fix the blurry photos:

    • Open the image in PSE 13
    • Select the background layer(considering that your image is .jpg)
    • Duplicate this layer and select the duplicate layer
    • Go to filter menu->Other->High Pass
    • Image is shown with a gray overlay, When radius is 0 ,nothing is visible, except the grey overlay. As you increase the radius, image starts showing.Adjust the radius to such a value until you barely see any of the lines in the photos. Value of radius is different for different images depending upon image size.
    • Click ok in the filter dialog
    • Go to the blending mode of this layer.
    • Change it to soft light, if there is less blur. Go for overlay blending mode, if there is more blur.In case, there is dramatic blur, use hard light mode.

This should fix your blurriness to an extent.

You can also try the latest version of Photoshop Elements wherein we have provided a dedicated feature for removing camera shake called shake reduction. You can use the following link to try the latest version:

    Download Photoshop Elements | 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10

Thank you for your response. I was able to follow the directions until I got to the step 7, which is the blending mode, which I am unable to find in Elements 13. Can you tell me where to find it?
    Thank you!

On the right hand side where it shows the background and the copy you made you will see a mini window showing the copy you can select and just above there it should have a drop down saying "Normal".  Select that to go to soft light or hard light.
