Hi!
All of a sudden, when I go to transcribe my sequence, the only option is to transcribe the entire source clip.
I'm just taking snippets of interviews and adding captions for social media. These can be hour long interviews, and I'm just trying to get the 1-2 minutes I've outlined in my sequence.
Anyone have any ideas here?
Jillian,
You're in the Beta forum, which has had the Text-based editing process for a while. It just hit the release version with 23.4.0.
To use your old method, ignore all the source media transcription invitations, select your sequence in the timeline, go to the Text Panel -> Transcript Tab. Click the 3 dots and pick Static Transcript.
If that doesn't work; ask further.
Here are the FAQs for the new process:

Thank you SO much!!!!!!!
Totally see the benefits of transcribing the whole source, and I'll look into this in the future! But thank you for allowing me the ability to continue doing my job hahahahaha.

Hi Stan
When I do a source media transcription it doesn't seperate the speakers in the same way the old static transcription did. I can't seem to find preferences that allow me to select language, source tracks etc. What am I missing?

Red Letter,
Edit -> Preferences -> Transcription and be sure you have speaker separation set there. If it shows "Select an option," it is not set. You can set it there by turning on "Automatically transcribe clips," setting speakers to "Yes, separate speakers," and then turning off "Automatically transcribe clips."
I have not discovered exactly when source transcription does not show the dialogue that includes speakers. I think it is mostly for auto-transcription.
When you get the "Create source media transcription" dialogue, you get the actual "Separate speakers" option. And then it works.

Hi, Stan.
I have the same problem. However, I tried you methord: I selected the sequence, clicked Text->Transcript Tab, clicked 2 dots, but there is no option for "Static Transcript"
The strange things is that only one sequence is this way. I can still transcribe other sequences the old way (not being forced to transcribe the source." And this sequence is only an rearangement of the original one.
Thank you!

Ignore my previous mesage Stan. I found the Static Transcript, clicked it. Don't see a progress bar, but the hard drive seems to be busy spinning. Hope this will work. Thanks again!

Hey, did you figure this out? Did this method work for you? Stan's method didn't work for me and it's driving me insane for such a simple task. Adobe sure do make the simplest things overly complicated.

Just wasted untold amount of time trying to figure out why I suddenly was not able to re-transcribe sequence as I've done for a long time now. Why would the feature say "sequence" when it's really transcribing source? Why wouldn't I be able to re-transcribe source anyway? It's definitely programmers and not actual editors making the decisions over at Adobe. Premiere can do a lot, but for the amount of known bugs you ignore and the poorly designed features you roll out... Really takes the joy out of editing.

Danny,
I also think there should be a better UI. But there is a learning curve, and once you get there some of the confusion is gone.
Where are you seeing sequence when it's really source? All the places I can see at the moment are correctly labeled. But I may have missed something.

From what I've understood, reading help threads and forums, clicking "transcribe sequence" generates a transcript that follows the source around and can't be re-done. In my case, the transcript generated was very incomplete, leading to very incomplete SRTs (which was the real reason I was transcribing)—I wasn't going to manually re-do 40 minutes worth of bad subs. But I did have a cleaner audio file of the same footage, so I pulled it in and went to re-transcribe, but I couldn't. Wasted so much time because "transcribe sequence" had given me a bad transcription that followed the source around (I guess the transcript was connected to the linked video, which didn't change with the audio file?). As I type this, I'm getting more confused as to why I couldn't just re-transcribe with new audio. If there is a change in the audio tracks of a sequence, there's no good reason I wouldn't be able to re-transcribe. EXCEPT... I was supposed to just "know" to select "Generate static transcript". Thanks for that, btw, that was the solution I needed. Maybe it doesn't transcribe the source per se, but what a bad layout to have a broken "Transcribe sequence" be the wrong option, just above the right option.

Danny,
Thanks for the information. I see "Transcribe Sequence" now, but I see no circumstance where it is not greyed out.
In Sequence/Program Monitor view, if there is no static transcript, the 3 dot menu shows a greyed-out "Transcribe Sequence" above “Generate Static Transcript.”
If the source clips are not source-transcribed, there is a "Transcribe" button in the transcript tab, but it is a source transcription button.
If there is a static transcript, the “Generate Static Transcript” is replaced by "Generate text-based editing transcript..." Above it, NOT greyed out, is “Re-transcribe sequence….” If Re-transcribe sequence is selected, the dialogue box has a title of Generate Static Transcript.
Also, if there is a static transcript and the "Generate text-based editing transcript..." operation is used, the option is again “Generate Static Transcript” but above it, greyed out, is “Re-transcribe sequence….”
The UI would be clearer if the upper of those 2 lines in Sequence/Program Monitor view was “Generate Static Transcript” if there is no static transcript and "Re-generate Static Transcript" if there is one. And the lower line would be "Generate text-based editing transcript..." if there is a static transcript, and it would be greyed out if there is not one.
@Kerstin Ebert @alexander-riss,
Is the "Transcribe Sequence" option in the 3 dot menu ever active?

In order to transcribe your sequence (not the source clips), you need to actually select the contents (highlight) of the sequence (command+a)...then go to the 3 buttons in the text panel to click on "generate static transcript". If you simply "select the sequence" by placing your cursor in the timline, the transcript option will only allow you to access the source footage, not the contents of your edited sequence. Took me a while to figure this one out too.

Does this work with actually transcribing with text-based editing and not just static transcript? Thanks for the tip!

I do not find that you have to select the clips to do a static transcription of a sequence. As long as the focus is in the timeline/sequence/Program Monitor AND the bottom left of the Text panel shows the Program Monitor view is active, Static Transcription will be an option.
There are a variety of workflows that get to the same results - whether text-based, source transcriptions or sequence, static, transcriptions.

I don't get it. Your reply don't seem to connect with my message.
I want to transcribe portions only of the videos when I add them into a sequence, and I do not want premiere to transcribe from the whole source file for text-based editing transcription because it takes a lot of time. I want to know if there's any option to do what I need to simply transcribe for text-based editing JUST the portion of a source file that I add in a sequence because to my knowledge it only can be done for static transcription.

Right. Thanks for that clarification. I think this is a "feature request." I do not know of one. If you make one, post it here so we can upvote.
There may be workarounds, but I suspect they involve so much work that you might as well just transcribe the whole clips.
Workaround 1.
Add a clip to a sequence by itself. Adjust in/out in the source monitor or after getting in the sequence. Create a static transcript. Nest that sequence when you want to use the clip. It will behave like a source media transcript.
Workaround 2.
Create a subclip of the portion of the clip you want. To transcribe just that portion, you must set it to "Restrict trims to subclip boundaries." If you do not, it will create a transcript of the whole clip. Right-click in the Project Panel and transcribe. If that clip has been transcribed before, you will pick re-transcribe. You CANNOT use a previous transcription; the timecodes will be wrong. Now Edit Subclip and Convert to Source Clip (this sets the timecode to start at zero; otherwise, the source transcript will not be seen by a new sequence you add it to, and you get "No dialogue."
Regarding subclips, see this thread:

Hi there, I have been using this workaround for months, and a lot of the times when I choose Static Transcript, nothing happens. Typically, I just restart Premiere and then it works fine. But now, that's not working either. I've duplicated the sequence, the project, updated Premiere, nothing. I hit the button and nothing happens.
If I choose to transcribe the source clips, that will run, but the source clips are 90 min each and my sequence is 60 seconds, so that seems silly to wait for that.
