Major lag on timeline with Premiere Pro v 23.1 - macOS

Since updating to Premiere v 23.1, I'm experiencing serious delays when performing standard actions on the timeline (scrubbing, trimming, playback, etc). Restarting the application seems to provide temporary relief, but performance quickly gets sluggish the longer I edit.

The lag occurs regardless of:

  • whether the playback resolution is 1/4 or high
  • whether High Quality Playback is checked
  • whether I've rendered clips on the timeline
  • the type of media (compressed video, proxies, just audio)

I've also tried:

  • updating macOS
  • setting my audio input to none
  • clearing the media cache
  • resetting the workspace

I use Productions and am working on the same projects (now upgraded to the new version) that had no performance problems before the last update. If anyone can help me troubleshoot or provide insight, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks, y'all.

Hello everyone.  I'm pleased to announce that Premiere Pro version 23.2 has just been released with a fix for this issue and some other nice features.  Please update to get the fix.  Thank you to everyone who contributed detailed information.  It was very helpful in tracking down this issue.

Hi everyone, I'm the product manager on Premiere Pro and I want to let everyone know that we are working hard to fix this issue.  This is a bad bug for sure.  Our engineers are very confident they have tracked down the root cause and are working hard on a fix.  In the meantime, this is what we know.  We are only getting reports of it affecting MacOS, but the problem could in theory affect Windows too.  Closing and reopening the sequence is the best workaround that we know of right now, but it's

Francis, can you tell us what caused the issue?   Not sure any of us will understand, but might be useful for us to hear what was the root of the issue...    And thanks for your help and for your presence here...

@Francis-CrossmanAwesome! Seems to be working on Windows also. No more lagging. Very happy about this. Also happy with the Dutch auto-captions!

@Michael Grenadier It was way down deep in the guts of the sequence code.  I don't understand it either, to be honest.  The sequence is the most complex part of the whole app.  Luckily we have a lot of very smart engineers on the team.

I'm having the exact issues ever since upgrading to Ventura and 23.2.  Getting so frustrated.  Shouldn't be happening.

23.2 didn't change the problem for me. I have to quit and reopen every 10 minutes to avoid the progressive timeline lagging. This is the last time (of many) I break from work to surf the web to solve Premiere issues. Resolve, here I come. Premiere needs an entire overhaul.. it's essentially a legacy product with new features stacked on top. What a mess!

@csselement

If updating to 23.2 did not resolve the issue, then you are not experiencing the macOS side issue of the Sequence not releasing RAM as expected.

What mezzanine format are you using for editing and is your storage media fast enough to sustain the data transfer rate?

@Gabby16bit

Have you tried higher quality settings on the OBS side?  Or Lossless?

Users who transcode to a mezzanine format on the Premiere Pro side or optimized format on the Resolve side report better performance with OBS recordings.

Removing the temporal compression makes a huge difference.

Hi dilanj, are you operating with macOS or Windows? If on Windows, this is a different bug. In either case, kindly try out Premiere Pro Beta to see if you are clear of the error.

Thanks,
Kevin

what mac model are you using? I've got a macstudio running ventura Apple
M1 Max and 32gigs of ram without these issues... although I'm not using
dip to white. If it was working fine in the previous version, revert to
that version.

There are some simple troubleshooting steps I'd recommend.
Uninstall Premiere using this tool
https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/cc-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html
and then reinstall

reset your preferences and empty you cache

Updates often make greater demands on system resources... At the moment,
I'm working with a 3 camera shoot with 1080 24p avchd sources without any
issues. What are your source properties and sequence settings

Are you running any other programs at the same time as Premiere? If so, as
a troubleshooting step try closing everything except Premiere.

Might be useful to create a new user with administrative privileges in
system preferences: users and groups and make sure there are no log in
items enabled and see if that helps.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

If you have any questions about how to do these things, post bac,

Please try these things in a systematic fashion and post back with your
results.

Hello,
PR is destroying my work flow. I just went back to 23.0 because I know 23.1 was garbage, and I installed 23.2 which is more garbage. Back to 23.0 is PR over this the worst work flow ever. I have been using PRsince 2005. WTF.

My setup: 2.4 GHZ 8 core intel core i9
AMD Radeon Pro 5600M 8GB
64 GB
Ventura 13.2.1

I have been editing for 20 years and never have had this much frusturation. Work is work, but with fighting software is brutal.

Best, Robert.

I am starting to wonder if the original problem of this thread still exists. Granted, I've never used so many MOGRTs before, and maybe that's my root cause. But I've never had to sit around and wait for Adobe to render and catch up to my movements the way I have in the last 3-4 months - since the OP shared her feedback.

Admittedly, I may also not be set up for optimal performance. So, if anyone can point to specific threads or links for optimizing my performance with Adobe PP on a Macbook Pro 2019, I'm all ears.

System specs:

macOS Ventura (13.2)

Adobe Premiere Pro 23.2.0 (Build 69)

Macbook Pro 16-inch, 2019

2.4 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9

64GB 2667 MHz DDR4

AMD Radeon Pro 5600M 8GB

Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536MB
