Hey all,
I've been experiencing what I believe is a memory leak. Probably 2-3 times per day I'm having a dialogue pop up on my 16" M1 Max Macbook Pro (M1 Max, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD) that says my computer is out of memory. Premiere completely locks up and I lose whatever work I have done since the last save/autosave. In the dialogue box, it usually says Premiere is using around 100-120GB of RAM. My preferences are set to reserve 6GB open for other applications but obviously the program is blowing way past that number multiple times per day. Unfortunately, it isn't perfectly replicable as it doesn't crash every single time I use it. At 2-3 times per 8-hour edit day, I'd say it ends up crashing like this 20-30% of the time I use it.
Before anyone asks: Yes, my software is fully up to date via CC (Premiere 23.2.0). I am on MacOS Ventura 13.2.1. I am editing off of an external SSD. The entirety of the project is 300GB.
Has anyone else experienced this issue and resolved it?
Thanks!
Hi @Srfaye327,

I have te same issue on my Macbook pro M2 Max with 64GB of Ram and 2TB Drive...
I tried everything, restarted system, reinstalled Premiere, creating new projects and pasting sequence on it, deleting media cache and still premiere is working so bad...
Im installing PP 22.0 right now - its last try - when it wont help I'll learn Davinci - so many people are going into davinci software... now i know the reason ...

Thanks for sharing! I know a number of users who are experiencing this issue. I work over 40 hours a week and simply don't have time to do all of the troubleshooting Adobe usually wants me to do. Even just coming onto this forum to post takes too much time. For as much as we all pay per year, I expect Premiere to reliably work right out of the box without needing constant troubleshooting. It's been years since it's been that way.

Bad news.... I Installed Premiere 22.0 - 22.5 - 22.6.4 - all three versions have the same issue - imo the most "stable" was 22.5... Its funny beacuse im editing on light, fullhd proxies saved on my SSD... Even that after 2/3 hours of editing I get the same error....

I think the issue might be working off of SSDs. Since transferring my project to the internal SSD I haven't had the issue (it has only been a couple of days). I've also had iStat open during editing to monitor the RAM so IDK if that is helping to manage memory usage as well.

I have an M2 pro Mac mini and the same issue. It just collapses at the 95GB.
But the same project works on Macbook Pro i9 processor. (which shows me, that project takes 135gb to still work).
This is f*cking nonsense and frustrating. The whole day lost with NO solutions and even reinstalled Mac mini M2

Having the same problem using Production for a tv show. Memory spikes on my M2 Max to 118GB and crashes...

FWIW, I have this memory leak problem on my M2 Mac and for me the cause is the Lumetri Scopes panel. I sadly cannot have it open because it immediately starts to eat up the memory until it fills it completely and crashes premiere. I have worked with Adobe and they haven't been able to reproduce this on their end but for me it happens with every single project, so it's not project or media dependent. Just thought this might help someone if they unknowingly have their Lumetri Scopes panel up to check and see if the problem resolves once you close the panel, save, and restart the program.

Hey there, @Tina37166069551w,
Very weird! Thanks for the feedback and workaround steps. I can't reproduce the issue so far, but I'll look for it across the community.
Thanks again,
Kevin

Hey Kevin-Monahan,
Thanks for checking in! I do still experience this issue sometimes, though it is a lot less often now. It seems to happen in short bursts every month or two. After several weeks, it'll happen for a couple of days and then it stops. I haven't been paying close enough attention to know whether it's an update from Adobe that fixes it or I simply stopped experiencing it because I wrapped that project and started a new one. I do, however, know that none of my editing practices have changed (I still edit off of the same external SSD on my 16" M1 Max MacBook Pro and haven't tweaked any settings).
I have noticed that sometimes resetting my workspace resolves the issue. When Premeire starts to get super laggy and lock up (an indication that the memory allocation is spiraling out of control again), I'll leave my activity monitor on in the background so I can keep an eye on the memory. When it starts to skyrocket past 20-30GB is when I know that it's happening. I quickly save my premiere project and then gun for the "reset my workspace" keyboard shortcut as quickly as possible. Sometimes I catch it before my whole computer locks up, sometimes I'm forced to end the process in the activity monitor and start again. Whether I quit or am forced to end the process, I have to do the same thing as soon as I re-launch the project: reset the workspace. If I don't, it's very likely to lock up and crash within 60-120 seconds of the project opening up.
Hope that helps someone!
Shane
