P: Premiere Pro Freeze During Export Using Hardware Encoding (NVIDIA RTX 5070)

Community Beginner ,
May 25, 2025 May 25, 2025

Hi Adobe Community,

I'm experiencing consistent freezes when exporting projects using CUDA acceleration with my new NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070. This occurs in both Adobe Premiere Pro and Media Encoder.

Bug Report Details:

  • Product(s) Affected:

    • Adobe Premiere Pro (25.2)

  • Operating System: Windows 11 Pro

  • GPU: ASUS Prime GeForce RTX™ 5070 OC Edition 12GB GDDR7

  • GPU Driver: NVIDIA Studio Driver (Latest version available at the time of this report)

Issue Description:
Since upgrading to the ASUS RTX 5070, Adobe Premiere Pro freeze during export when CUDA acceleration is enabled. The application becomes completely unresponsive at a random percentage of export progress. No error message is displayed, and no crash logs seem to be generated. The application process cannot be terminated via Task Manager, forcing a full PC restart.

Project & Export Settings (Typical Scenario):

  • Source Footage: H.265

  • Sequence Resolution: 1080p

  • Sequence Duration: Approximately 40 minutes

  • Effects Used: Minimal (no heavy effects or LUTs)

  • Preview Rendering: Not used

  • Export Format: H.264

  • Renderer: Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (CUDA)

  • Encoding: Hardware Encoding

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Open a project in Premiere Pro (e.g., a 40-minute timeline with H.265 footage, simple edits, no heavy effects).
  2. Go to File > Export > Media.
  3. Set Export Format to H.264.
  4. Ensure "Performance" is set to "Hardware Encoding."
  5. Under Video > Encoding Settings (or similar, depending on version), ensure the Renderer is set to "Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (CUDA)."
  6. Start the export (either directly from Premiere Pro or by queuing to Media Encoder).

Expected Result:

The export completes successfully(New RTX 5000 series now support 4:2:2 10bit H.265 natively)

Actual Result:
The application (Premiere Pro) freezes at a random point during the export. It becomes unresponsive, and the system requires a hard restart as the application cannot be closed via Task Manager.

Additional Notes:

  • The problem is reproducible in both Premiere Pro direct export and Adobe Media Encoder.

  • Switching to "Software Eng" rendering allows exports to complete, but this is not ideal.

I would appreciate any insights, troubleshooting steps, or guidance on whether this is a known compatibility issue. Please let me know if further information is required.

Thank you!

NVIDIA posted Game Ready Driver, 581.42 yesterday that includes all the required fixes for this issue. It is available here for desktop users : https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/details/257133/

Due to a recent plan of release change, we did not post a updated Studio Driver yesterday, the next Studio Driver to now pick up all the required fixes will be on Oct 14th.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Are you using a 50 series Nvidia GPU?

@Witold3607716889yl it may not be the same issue. 4090s have been around for quite awhile and there is not a lot of reports on the 4000 series. I'm on a 4070 and it works fine. You might want to look for other causes. Or try the same work arounds mentioned in this thread.

Doing a stress test - so far so good... 3 shorts, 4 long forms. Will report back.

Just a follow up.

I've managed to successfully render out 3 shorts and 1 long form (approx 60 minutes long, 4K 60fps). Straight from Prem.

I did try it through Media Encoder but it did seem to take ALOT longer.

5070, Studio driver 581.57, latest Prem & ME versions.

Editing in Prem felt a lot smoother.

Still early days but things feel better.

@Daniel31572930sqvu I think you should time the renders.  I have been noticing that there are at times 3x longer renders in ME vs Premier - but I have been running the beta, I posted about it in the beta group, but that thread is all but ignored by one other person.  I think there is significant difference, I rarely render within premier, as even if I exit premier, and wrap for the day, I like being to see where in the render it is (like in ME) - I wish Premier also did this - along with putting the exact timecode its processing on the screen.

Also; Glad to see your tests are holding up.  I was not having issues with the 5090,  but I will be running some tests later today to ensure no new bugs are introduced, and I will also run a test ME vs PR to see if the speed difference is still there, and by home much.

I also have a GeForce RTX™ 5070 and was having the same problem.
I just increased the % CPU reserved for other application from 10% to 20% (On the memory and performace tab) and now I can render whitout crashing.
If anyone can try and report back.

@mayjain With 581.57, all export freezing issues appear to be resolved - both on Premiere Pro and Media Encoder standalone. Thanks!

With my three hour video exports, I do get a long (over 30 minute) pause at the end of exporting while the video finalizes, but it does complete and I don't believe it's an Nvidia issue. It is either a separate bug or Adobe needs to include finalization time into their progress bar so it doesn't look like a freeze.

That pause is normal, and yes it should be included in the estimated time remaining - I belive its remuxing the audio and video into one file after the export of each seperatly.

@mayjain thats a great question - I was wonderign the same thing, but also considering how faster this thread died off afer that update I assumed no one had issues remaining.  I personaly wasnt seeing any issues after swapping out my 3090 for a 5090 - and still see no render fails.  I have been mostly usign the beta now, and see some odd things I posted about in the beta forum.  I could not link the issues to the driver and this threads issue as they are different and seem to be related to effects.

I have seen some significant slow render times in media encoder vs out of premier direct, but not what the root of that is.  I have also posted in the beta about that - but there has been little to no response in the beta with feedback on many of the reports posted there.

As for this crash on export issue, it seems resolved, hopefully if anyone is still having issues they report back - I'm good (still).

I'm still running into this issue on RTX 5070Ti, 4K h264/5 export with multicam - both from Premeire and Media Encoder UIs are freezing.

Exports are freezing and saturating entire memory (64gb). Scrubbing the timeline also freezes for 15-20seconds every time I switch between sequences and try to scrub. I've tried all the basics (new project import, remove all effects from the timeline etc), no avail.

Studio Driver 591.44

EDIT: I tested this on a Mac with the same results so I suspect there is still something in the project causing this - most likely unrelated to GPU.

EDIT #2: Found the culprit - iZotope VEA (audio plugin) on one the clips. I had to completely remove the entire sequence, not just the clip/effect. Working fine now.

I was planning to replace my RTX 3060 with a newer Nvidia 5000 series card, but after seeing reviews on forums, I noticed these cards are having problems with black screens, low performance, or not being recognized. On older computers with AM4 platforms, this error appears more frequently. On some newer computers, the black screen occurs upon restarting the system. My computer is AM4. I'll wait to see if there's a definitive fix before buying. You can search on forums like Reddit; I don't know if there's already a definitive fix, but it's a chronic bug. Nvidia is aware of the problem. These performance issues with the standard Nvidia 5060, 5070, and TI cards in Adobe Premiere are due to errors in the cards, which don't yet have good compatibility to function correctly in Windows. If any forum users who use these cards on older computers comment, please let me know if they are now working correctly without errors.

@Victor5CD3 I am using a 5090FE with a Intel 10980 (so pretty old) without issues...

I feel like the RTX driver issue has been resolved, I dont think anyone even came back to post on this thread it it was fine,  they downloaded, installed and went back to work....

It feels like it would be safe to upgrade to 5000 series at this point.

Thanks FlyingFourFun, I forgot to mention that this error was occurring across the entire 5000 series, including the 5090. I just saw the latest posts about these cards on the Reddit forum, some from November. If it doesn't work or has problems like black screen or low performance, it said that Nvidia released an update for the video card BIOS, making it necessary to install it. Some users on the Reddit forum recommended resetting the motherboard's CMOS to install these cards. Did you install it normally on your computer, or was it necessary to do any of these procedures or also update the motherboard BIOS? I'm still not sure about buying it.

I am very farmilure, and was close to this issue.  I had a 3090FE at the start, and was waiting on my 5090FE to be delivered.  The issue was 'fixed' - which was an error / mistatement by the nvidia team on this post, but one driver version later it was in fact corrected.  I had issues with just the one version fo the driver, as I was able to avoid most of the issues.

It was clear, that the nvidia driver update resolved the issue.  I made no other changes, and the error conditions went away.

All of that speculation of MB setings that you are pointing to were all fruitless and people guesing.  I dont think I single one of them worked long term, and turns out was not required.  The root issues appeared to have been a memory leak in the driver when usign the NVENC encoder.  Adobe seems to have started to lean heavy on the use of the NVENC encoders, which is likly what caused the problem to show up more often and very consistently.

Your experience could be different,  but I can assure you,  if this was still any issue you would have about 500 posts a day about it - but I'm sure you have looked and searched, and have seen almost nothing even close to isses with the 5000 series cards for months now.

Your decision to make when your comfortable.

Great, that cleared things up a lot for me. I just ordered a video card from an e-commerce site here in Brazil, I opted for the RTX 5060ti 16gb. I hope it doesn't have any errors during installation and that I get a good performance improvement since it's a newer technology. My ATX power supply is a 750 watt Corsair, I've had it for over 5 years, I hope it's compatible since it meets the power requirements.

The latest drivers from Nvidia have fixed the issues that the 50 series cards had on release across all the video apps. So they seem good to work with now.
