Text Based Editing Doesn't Work!!!

New Here ,
Oct 09, 2025 Oct 09, 2025

Premiere is SO frustrating!! Text based editing doesn't always work in 2025 that's why I only use 2024. BUT, those bastards just updated 2024 and now text based editing stopped working! You can't win with Adobe. They gladly pick your pocket, though.

I used to be able to highlight text and press . (period key) to add to timeline. Nope. No more. Yes, all my tracks are selected in the timeline. Yes, auto set in/out points is on. The only way to make it work is to leave Transcript window, go to Timeline and press . Such a waste of time.

Adobe, quite breaking stuff!

Hi @Jeff33943836p6zx that's strange, I'm not seeing this on my system. Could you share a screenshot, video, or more details about your setup? Are you going from a transcribed source in the Source Monitor?

Also one thing to try is see if resetting to the default keyboard shortcuts makes it work again. If it does, it means there's a conflict somewhere in your custom keyboard shortcuts.

Sorry that you're going through this.

Would you be able to give a screen shot of the interface so that we can try to help?

I can repro this problem with cc2025.5.0

The shortcut , and . do nothing in text panel

If you work from the source monitor it works.

Focus does not automatic shift to source montor however after selecting some text.

Transcript doesnot seem to switch to timeline either.

So this seems like a bug.

steps to repro

- import a clip with dialoge

- transcribe clip

- open text window and source  window

- select some text with auto in out selected

- hit , or .

result nothing happens, tried also with default adobe shortcuts.

Here are some shots of my set-up. Same settings as when this used to work with a previous version of 2024.

@Jeff33943836p6zx,

Thanks for the screenshots. I'm Win11 PR 25.5.0. The shortcuts are also working for me from the text panel.

If you right-click the selection in the Text panel, for Insert and Overwrite, do you see the . and , indicated as the shortcuts there? Whether you do or not, does clicking them insert/overwrite? Does clicking the insert/overwrite icons from the Text panel work?

This is odd because the . and , are application wide shortcuts, and I don't think there is any assignment possible in the Text panel to interfere. But we have seen examples where custom keyboard assignments from older versions can sometimes create oddities. If you haven't, I'd try Matt's suggestion to try the default keyboard shortcuts; you can switch back to your custom.

Workaround: If none of those work, try the Text-based editing workspace. This has the option to keep the Source Monitor and Text Panel on screen together, and, as long as you don't switch focus to the Timeline or Program Monitor, you can keep your workflow.

Forgot to mention, I'm on a Mac.

Re: If none of those work, try the Text-based editing workspace. *I've tried every option. Nothing works...the keyboard shortcuts nor the buttons in the panel. I have to highlight text, switch to timeline, insert or overwrite edit and then switch back to text window AND then try to locate where I last was in the transcript. It's time consuming and clunky. Like I said, it's been an issue for a while and am surprised it hasn't been fixed. Thanks!

@Jeff33943836p6zx,

Thanks for that. Yes, a total pain!

What OS version? Let's see what other Mac users see.

If I am missing something, my apologies. What I am suggesting re the Text-based editing workspace (any workspace that has the Text panel and Source monitor in different panel groups), is for you to have access to the Insert/Overwrite button in the Source monitor. If that button is working for you, it will keep your transcript in the same place, but add it to the timeline that is showing.

UPDATE-This only happens when I try to use text-based editing on an existing sequence (made before the update). When I created a new sequence, it works. SO, that's the fix.
