After updating to version 23.3 of premiere pro, playback is extremely slow and unusable.

I updated "PP" to its newest version and ever since, trying to run playback of any clips in the timeline is just too choppy to make edits with. The program seems to be slugging around overall since. On opening up the software intially it works fine, but that dissipates very quickly. Is downgrading to the previous version best idea?

Make sure Windows is fully updated.

Delete the Media Cache and Media Cache files:

Try updating or rolling back your graphics driver directly from the video card manufacturer’s site. If NVIDIA, do a clean installation of the latest Studio Driver (NOT the Game Driver)

Your GPU doesn't meet the latest minimum requirements:

Intel: 2 GB of GPU memory

Is there any way to update my GPU or find an external source that'll allow for me to improve my GPU capabilities?

I'm a Windows guy, not Mac.

I would check with Apple or where you purchased the computer.

Your system hardware is officially too old to meet Adobe's official minimum system requirements. Worse, you cannot upgrade or even change its core components at all.

You see, Adobe officially requires a MacBook that was introduced in 2017 or later in order to run Premiere Pro properly. Your MacBook Pro dates back to early 2015.

Therefore, officially, the only fix is an entirely new computer.

Gotcha. I installed older versions of Premiere and the software works fine there. Guess that's my fix until the new computer is obtained.

Are there any GPU updates available or external sources I can use to better my GPU performance

Regrettably, no. Nothing at all whatsoever (except for maybe the RAM) is user-replaceable at all. Worse, the Apple hardware system is permanently locked to the hardware that is originally in that system.

And your MacBook Pro apparently has only the integrated Intel Iris Pro graphics, and no discrete GPU whatsoever. Therefore, you're permanently stuck with what it already has.

And your system has two Thunderbolt 2 ports - but most newer eGPUs absolutely require Thunderbolt 3 or newer in order to work properly. (Sure, you can run an eGPU through Thunderbolt 2; however, the GPU performance will be bottlenecked by the interface.)

Watched a tutorial on using proxies. When I was able to get the files into Media Encoder and get the encoding process started, they all instanly failed. I was left with a message that said, "Could not create the output. Please check if the output is read only or locked."

Any idea to what this means?

Another user had this issue and restarting the computer fixed it.

It could also be a permissions issue.

Experiencing choppy playback and sluggish performance after updating software can be frustrating, but there are several steps you can take to address the issue before considering downgrading. Here is a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem:

  1. Check System Requirements: Ensure that your computer meets the system requirements for the updated version of the software. Sometimes, newer versions may demand more resources. Check the software's official website for the recommended system specifications.

  2. Update Graphics Drivers: Outdated or incompatible graphics drivers can contribute to performance issues. Visit the official website of your graphics card manufacturer and download the latest drivers for your specific model.

  3. Adjust Playback Settings: In the software settings, look for playback or performance options. You may find settings related to hardware acceleration or playback quality. Experiment with different settings to find the configuration that works best for your system.
