Am I losing my mind or has Premiere's Type tool broken text resizing?

I swear I used to be able to click the Type tool, click and drag a text box, type something, then centre it (for example) and if I wanted to widen the bounding box - on both sides, not just the side I drag - I just hold Shift (or was it Alt?)

I also swear when I finished typing, I could just hit Esc and immediately it takes me out of typing mode and the resizing handles would appear on my box, allowing me to resize it.

Am I getting confused with Photoshop? I've used PP so many years, if I'm mixing this up I must be going senile.

Either way, PP should definitely work this way because it's SO DUMB having to resize the bounding box only on one side, then move the entire thing the oppposite direction so it's correctly centred again (then probably realising that it's now too big and you repeat the process 5 times when you want the bounding box to simply move equally in both sides width-wise (or height-wise)

Really annoying. I mean, currently those keyboard modifier keys just have zero effect. What a waste.
