Applying transitions without extending the clips

I couldn't find any answer/solution to this, so perhaps it's just impossible to do in Premiere Pro. Anyway, I have 2 clips on the timeline to which I would like to add a transition (let's say dissolve). To do that, I would need to trim the end of the 1st/the beginning of the 2nd clip to avoid "freeze frames" situation. I'm not a fan of doing it that way. What I would like to do is trim both clips BEFORE adding a transition and THEN add that transition BUT WITHOUT extending those clips at the end of the 1st one/beginning of the 2nd one.

To better illustrate it:

A - 10s clip

B - 12s clip

I trim clip A to 5s and clip B to 6s. I don't want the transition to go beyond those values. It should only use exactly 5s from clip A and 6 from clip B.

Is such a thing possible to do in Premiere Pro CC 2017 ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

That is how Pr works.

If you dont want the transition to go beyond the 5 seconds you need to trim the clip further back.

Say your transition is 1 second: clip A should be trimmed to 4 1/2 seconds at the end and clip B should be trim

Clip A and B with the transition will be a total of 11 seconds.

Well, that's what I thought. I come from another editing software where things were to be done a little bit different. Anyway, thanks for clearing this up !
