I am trying to add short captions to my video. I set the max characters to 10. It works well 95% of the time but sometimes creates more than 10 characters. I tried to edit it manually, but it did not let me.
This is how I created it.
This is what I get. It gives me full sentences.
In some other editors, you can even split the words into characters. I chose premiere pro because it was the only one that has character length customization for auto captions, at least among the ones I looked at. It seems like it does not work the way I intended. Is there any way to fix this?

I've noticed something similar or at least, potentially related, in that I usually select "single line" for captions, but will occasionally get double-lined captions. I'm wondering if it's a function of the software not being able to account for the different widths of different fonts. But I haven't noticed whether the character count itself has been off.

@B316066193qav @Ryan Fritzsche,
Yes, a) the logic is more complicated than it seems, in part because the elements interact and font size does matter and b) sometimes it is clearly just making bad decisions!
See this post for my recent tests:
When trying to get very short captions, I think it works better to drop the max characters all the way to 7. It will not break a word with more than7 characters. I ran this in a clip that is 2 and a half minutes. It produces 291 captions. I had only 2 instances where the max characters (7) was exceeded and there were 3 words. There were several 2-word segments that did not exceed 7. And a few 2-word that did exceed 7, but they were almost all VERY short duration. In fact, MANY segments were less than one second.
You can, manually, adjust the caption segments after creation. Merge/split and edit as needed.
