Hi,
I'm running Premiere 23.5 on an M1 MBP with Ventura. The auto-transcribe sequence function is not available in the sequence dropdown menu, where it used to be located and where it's still supposed to be according to what I read.
I tried using the transcript window within the text window instead. However, this doesn't seem to give me an option to select the language. It defaults to English, but since my VO is in German, the resulting text is nonsense. I am aware that language packs need to be installed for anything other than English. The system doesn't know though that the text is in German and I can't find a way to tell it.
Am I missing something or is this a bug? Please advise.
Thanks in advance,
Best, Julian

The option is located in the Import tab.

Thank you for the prompt response, Ann! I found the option where you described.
So, transcribing is only longer possible at the clip level on import, but not at the sequence level or for clips which have already been imported to the project, am I getting that right?

It does say "all imported clips," but if you import and then change the setting, it will auto-transcribe any SOURCE media that has not been transcribed. Or you can use the setting for only clips in sequences.
You change the setting via Edit -> Preferences -> Transcription. If you set it there, be sure to set the default language.
I think that it is only the auto-transcription that does not open the Create transcription dialogue - which is where you can change the language for each transcription. If you get a dialogue and do not see an option for language, be sure to click the drop down there for transcription settings.
Correct, it only does this on source media. It will not auto-transcribe STATIC transcripts for sequences. But you can nest a sequence and use its static transcript just like you would a source media transcript.

Thanks for getting back to me on this. I followed the steps you suggested: In the settings for Transcription I changed the language to German and had Premiere transcribe only clips in sequence, and the bars indicate that there is a transcription in progress, but it never finishes. I left the text window open for about 15 minutes, to no avail. It's a one minute clip, so I expect it would have finished in that timeframe. I tried a few hours ago, and again now, same result.
Any ideas?

Thanks for being responsive. This should be working.
I'm not at my computer. I don't recall if there's a cancel button in the progress window. Try to cancel the current transcriptions. Then pick one of the clips, right-click in the project panel, and pick re-transcribe or transcribe, whatever is available. Keep the progress window open.
A screenshot might help, but you seem to be describing it accurately.

Thanks Stan. I'm also afk for today. I'll try that tomorrow and let you know how it goes.

Hi,
I've followed the steps you suggested. I right-clicked on a clip in the project panel and clicked transcribe. I selected German as a language and hit transcribe. After 10 minutes of seeing progress bars I canceled the process. I then tried transcribing a sequence from the text window as static transcript. This also gave me porgress bars and I canceled after 10 minutes.
At one point there was also a re-transcribe option available for for either the clip or the sequence, but I wasn't able to reproduce the scenario when this option was available, which also didn't finish, but I'm not sure whether this was in the project or text window, nor whether it was for a clip or a sequence.
Could it be that the system is trying to transcribe every single clip in the project even when I point it to only one clip? When I continue editing and switch to another sequence, the text window changes and shows a long list of clips it is transcribing.
FYI My usage scenario is that 95% of my footage is B Roll and doesn't need transcription. If possible I'd like to be able to transcribe only specific clips or sequences.
Screenshots enclosed.
Best, Julian

It is not clear what is happening. So let's try to do a simple test.
Open the Progress Panel. Does it show any transcriptions as complete? If it has transcriptions in progress, scroll to the bottom and click "Cancel all." This should stop all of them.
To cancel a single transcription if it shows in the Transcription Panel, click the X.
In the Transcription Panel, click the box in the bottom left to turn ON Follow Active Monitor.
Go to Edit -> Preferences -> Transcription. Is auto-transcribe on? If so, turn it OFF.
What Workspace are you in? A PR one or custom that you modified? Switch to Text-based Editing. Click on workspaces and pick "Reset to Saved Layout."
Close PR and restart your computer.
Open PR. Create a new test project. Import one clip with video and audio. Import one clip that is one of the WAVs you are trying to transcribe.
Open the Progress Panel.
In the Project Panel, Right-click on the video file and pick transcribe. Progress should show in the Transcript tab and in the Progress monitor. The Progress Monitor has a percent complete number. Does it complete? If not, what percent does it show? As long as it is making progress, even if slow, let it continue. If it makes no progress for 10 minutes, cancel.
Repeat for the WAV file.
Let us know your results.

Hi,
Thanks for your response on this.
I tried the steps as outlined in your post. Inititially something strange happened when I imported the two clips via the import dialig box that came up when I created the new project. Instead of importing only the selected video file and the wav file, a seemingly bunch of additional random files were importet, over 1000 of them. I deleted all the imported files and imported them again from the project panel.
Then I transcribed first the video file, then the audio file, via the text panel in the -based-editing workspace (the option to transcribe wasn't available in the progress panel).
Both the text panel and the progress panel showed progress and the transcriptions finished. However, I am unable to reproduce this in the premiere project I have been working in. In the text panel there, the sequence I have open in the porgram monitor, is not available. Instead, a couple of seemingly random clips, which are not open in the source monitor, appear available to transcribe.
Does this bring any clarity to assess what is happening?

Julian,
Thanks for that report. Bottom line, I think there is still something wrong other than the basic transcription function.
Regarding the import, it is easy to select a bunch of files that you do not intend. (Clicking a folder can select all in the folder, and then it may not be clear how to deselect them.) When doing a "simple" test, I recommend skipping the import mode/project creation by NOT selecting any files for import, not turning on auto transcription, and not creating a sequence. Just click "Create" in the bottom right.
Correct, you cannot start transcription from the progress panel.
It looks like you got it right and transcription worked for the test video/audio clip and the wav file.
> In the text panel there, the sequence I have open in the program monitor, is not available.
If you are in sequence view, the only transcription to do on the sequence is to Generate a Static Sequence.
> Instead, a couple of seemingly random clips, which are not open in the source monitor, appear available to transcribe.
If it is prompting you for "2 clip are untranscribed," it is referring to source media. You may not want them transcribed.
If this is still not working, a screenshot showing the timeline, program monitor, project panel, transcription panel might help.

Wow! You've just made the transcription process extremely difficult compared to when it was a simple choice within the Sequence toolbar.
