I'm looking for the best way to turn my basic video off my camera into instagram sotry size. Right now the footage is 1920x1080. I want to do this without loosing quality or not by blowing it up to fit a new sequence setting. Any tips

Instagram stories are 1080x1920.  That means you need to create a new sequence in that resolution, then resize and/or letterbox your 1920x1080 video into that sequence.

I get it. But how is that possible? You only have 1080 pixels of height in the original, and IS story is 1920 high.

Jeff's method is the only way. But it will result in some loss of quality, and you'll lose pixels that are cut off left and right.

The only way to do it and not lose quality is to shoot vertically. Or shoot 4K and crop.

Hi everyone,

If you're working in Premiere Pro and need to convert a 1920×1080 (landscape) video into the Instagram Stories format (1080×1920 vertical), here's a reliable method:

1. **Create a new vertical sequence**: Go to File → New → Sequence and set the Frame Size to **1080 (width) × 1920 (height)**. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}

2. **Place your video into the timeline**. It will likely be horizontally oriented and centered.

3. **Adjust the scale and position**:
- To fill the vertical frame, increase the **Scale** until the width covers the full vertical area—this might crop top and bottom.
- Alternatively, set it lower and center the video, allowing black bars at the top and bottom for a letterbox look.

4. **Optional**: Use **Auto Reframe** (found under Sequence → Auto Reframe Sequence) to dynamically adjust and track the most important area if your footage has motion. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}

Export settings: make sure you also match these dimensions during export to avoid issues.

Let me know if you’d like help automating this or applying overlays properly! Happy to assist.

One common challenge is keeping your video content crisp and well-framed when converting from 16:9 (1920×1080) to 9:16 for Instagram Stories. Aside from cropping and resizing in Premiere, you might consider:

  • Previewing your Story before posting: Sometimes elements get cut off or look awkward in vertical format.

  • Checking public accounts for layout inspiration: A handy way to see how others frame content for Stories is to use instastoryviewer.io — you can view public Instagram Stories anonymously and get ideas for composition, timing, and pacing without logging in.

  • Using guides or safe zones: Mark the important areas that should stay within the vertical frame to avoid cutting off text or subjects.

This way, you can optimize your edits before exporting and uploading.
