Cache Files are rebuilding in the former (common) location after changing it in preferences, cache file deletion, reinstall, clear preferences etc. – grateful for any assistance.

Hello Everyone,

I am an amateur aspiring blogger with good hardware and half a clue in need of help. My Premiere Pro CC 2017 imported only peak files from 18 of 20 .MOV clips, and “normal” video clips for the other two, which could be added to the timeline. The 20 Clips (GSpot says avc1 H.264 “Codec Status Undetermined”) shot on an IPhone 7 with Filmic Pro (exported to camera roll) and transferred to the HDD of my video Computer (Windows 8.1) via USB 3.0, played in all of the windows apps on the video computer, but repeatedly imported exactly the same 18 of 20 erroneously only as peak files.

I updated to PP CC 2017.1 and simultaneously changed the cache location to the 256 GB internal SSD that I had intended to use, that is, I had only selected it for the database and not for the media cache on initial setup of the new video computer (rookie move). After that all 20 clips imported as video and all seemed well.

I looked back to the common file to see which files/folders I should delete now that the media cache was directed to the SSD and discovered after many deletions of the media cache files folder and PP restarts that the media cache files folder was being rebuilt and repopulated in the common file. After many media cache files folder deletions (PP was closed), restarts, PP reinstall, clearing preferences, and project deletion and new project creation – same problem: PP rebuilds the media cache files folder and repopulates it upon importing clips in the common file EVERY TIME, regardless of the preferences setting directing to the SSD (D:).

Note: after reinstall and clearing preferences the preferences settings remain the same for the database and cache locations - that is to say they are retained in the PP preferences as the SSD (D:) after reinstall and clearing preferences as opposed to returning to default as I would have expected.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Matt

Premiere does not like phone footage.

Convert with HandBrake to constant frame rate.

Then import into Pr.

Clean cache and relocate folder after you delete the files from Premiere.

Hi Ann,

Thanks for the rapid reply! I'll look into the frame rate issue for the future, although I'm pretty sure the FiLMiC Pro App shoots constant frame rate. I think the import problems were a separate issue that resolved with the upgrade to 2017.1.

In that respect my original post was not so clear in that the first paragraph was superfluous. Sorry.

The problem is actually the Media Cache file location, and having looked a little further in this forum with the right keywords, I see that others have had a similar problem. Hopefully someone has the answer.

Sincerely,

Matt

What if you change .mov into .mp4?
