Can't drag clips into timeline in chronological order

This problem has been bugging me for ages but I've never found a solution to it. I'm sure it's pretty simple...

If I drag multiple clips into the timeline, either externally from a Windows explorer window or internally from the Project panel, the clips are pasted in a random order. I have never been able to work out in what order PP is pasting the clips but it is truly random.

How do I get them to paste in a chronological order (by default this is also the ascending number order of the file names)?

Import the files into Premiere Pro.

In the list view in the Project Panel, sort the files by name.

Click on the lowest numbered file to select it.

Shift click on the highest number file, it will select it and all the files in between.

Click on the selected clips and drag into the timeline.

They will placed on the timeline in order.

Weird. I'm sure that's what I was doing previously but this works. Sometimes I drag and drop from Windows so I guess I shouldn't be doing this and only importing via the Project panel.

Mine works only if I do about 15 clips at a time. If I do many more than that they get out of order. It's almost like Premiere cannot handle the stress of too many clips and gives up after about 15.
