Can't sync mp3 to m4a

Hey guys, I'm trying to put together a video from which I captured audio from multiple mics. One recorded to mp3 and another to m4a. When I try to synchronize them, either by using the tool or by doing it manually, I find that they won't stay synced for the entire recording. I'll make them match in the beginning but they will be different by the end. Is there a simple fix for this?

Hello Max etc.,

Compression oriented formats like mp3 and the m4a container are not ideal for master recordings.

What was the audio recorder? What were it's settings?

What was the m4a file settings? Any chance you were using variable frame rate?

I was just using the Windows voice recorder app, that was what produced the m4a. How would I tell if I was using variable frame rate? Sorry, I'm new to all of this.

It's not unusual to have differences in "speed" from different audio recording devices.

Sometimes going into Audition, and setting both to the same herz/cycles settings helps.

But quite frequently, you need to stretch or shrink one track, to fit the other. That is, changing the playback length.
