Cannot import AVI files in Premiere anymore!

Hi there,

an issue that's really annoying and bothers me a lot: Due to a new system setup I reinstalled Adobe Premiere and now I'm no longer able to import AVI files anymore. These files contain screen recordings. This also means a loss of already done work for me. (Installed v13, didn't work, installed v12 and v11, but doesn't work either with the older versions.) I found older threads, but they were a few months old.

Is there any solution yet? - If you need more info, please let me know.

Thanks

dam,

Sorry for the frustration.

If this is not working in previous versions, this post might be the solution to your issue: Re: AVI file import gives "Unsupported format or damaged file" but file plays everywhere else

If you download the free app, MediaInfo, and then post a screenshot of the file in "tree view" here, we can tell for sure if you are using a supported file or not.

Hope to see that screenshot so we can help.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

thank you very much for your quick reply.

Based on what I can see on the screen posted in the linked thread I do not have much hope.

While posting this I make my first try with HandBrake. However - what's the issue? The container format AVI is no longer supported? What do I have to change?

Greetings

I love y... I mean, thank you.

In my hurry - needed a video editing solution real quick - I overlooked Lagarith, while even having other Codecs installed already.

Problem solved.

So the suggestion in 2019 is to install a free codec from 2011?     I'm not really excited about running an installer from 2011 on a windows 10 pc.

My ridiculous situation came about from exporting uncompressed AVI files from Autodesk Revit.   I did so twice this morning with test exports with success and imported into Premiere with zero trouble at all.   I was able to edit them fine.   Of course, these were test exports of about half of an animation that came out to 600MB avi first test, and 1.3GB avi on second test.  Both come into premiere just fine.   The final 3 video exports were full animations and the AVI's were all 2.7GB each.   None of these will import now.   All settings are exactly the same.  All my pc's video players play these videos fine.  But none of Premiere, AE, or Media encoder will open these final three files.   Am I to assume Revit changed the codec underlying the AVI because the filesize is larger?

Currently I'm going to attempt to piece out the exports from Revit by exporting half the frames at a time thereby cutting them in half to be below the size that worked previously.

Ann's suggestion above for Lagarith was because the file they were using used Lagarith (see the Mediainfo screenshot).

Not the codec, but AVI for greater than 2GB used a different method than the earlier AVI format. I would be surprised if that was still an issue. More likely, it is a Revit issue. Try this search which includes an issue with Revit corrupting the index on larger AVI files: "Revit avi file over 2 gb." In any event, using under 2GB exports for now makes sense to me.
