Caption style not updating / style settings ignored.

Hi, I'm having a problem with a bunch of .srt files I'm trying to edit the style of. I managed to edit about 60% of them to the look that I want, but now I've encountered a new seemingly random problem.

The SRT files I've imported today refuse to change their fonts in my timeline / preview window. I can change the settings in the caption window, and they are reflected in the thumbnail, but not in the video feed itself. I'm at a loss as to why this is happening. I can still change the style settings in the earlier .srt files I've imported but this one in particular just refuses to work and I don't know why.

Here's a handy dandy screenshot:

EDIT: Okay, I managed to get the preview to update by restarting Premiere Pro - but the problem still persists. I can't get these subs to update without restarting the program which is really frustrating. Is there something I can do to fix this?

Hi Bezner,

Sorry about the trouble. Please share more information & we will try to troubleshoot this.

  • What is the source of your SRTs?
  • Which version of Premiere Pro you have (check in the help menu)?
  • Please confirm if the issue is specific to this SRT.
  • Clean the media cache & check if that makes any difference. FAQ: How to clean media cache files?

Thanks,

Kulpreet Singh

Mr. Singh,

Hi. Thanks for getting back to me. To answer your questions:

  • The SRTs are generated by someone else on a third party program on a Mac. They are sent to me in parts.
  • I'm running Adobe Premiere Pro CC, 2017.1.2 Release, 11.1.2 (22) Build.
  • The issue appears to come and go at random. I've just had an instance where the subs appear with my custom style, but when I sent the timeline to Media Encoder to export, the caption style reverted to their bugged state, where they display as their default style despite the custom style applied. I've yet to finish exporting the video to know which version of the captions Media Encoder will take.
  • I'll try this right away. EDIT: I've done this and rebuilt the cache for the project - now one SRT in particular (a different one again) just doesn't appear in the preview despite showing as working in the timeline. /: the rest display as per normal.

I need to call it a night on my end - I'm going to leave Media Encoder to export the timelines overnight to see if this affects the export. If it isn't using the preview files it shouldn't have an issue encoding the correct caption style.

Thanks,

Bezner Lim

EDIT 2: I tried one last time to refresh the currently bugged caption by changing it's opacity - this has caused Premiere Pro to crash completely. /: Relaunching the program shows the previously bugged caption as it should be, and all captions appear as intended. Sending the timeline to Media Encoder bugs every caption in the timeline.

Hi Kulpreet,

Do you have any suggestion on how best to proceed? I've managed to find a workaround for my project but I would still like to get on top of this issue for future work.

Thanks,

Bezner Lim

Hi Bezner,

Sorry for the delay. I would suggest you to test that same file (captions) in the latest version of Premiere Pro v12.

We fixed a couple of issues (with open & closed captions) in this release. Or you can share your captions file and we will test it in our environment.

Make sure you go through these useful links before updating.

Mr. Singh,

Thanks for your reply - as we were able to work around the issue for now, I prefer to leave the update until we've finished up the currently outstanding projects. Once I've done that I'll post again with an update.

I don't mind sharing the .srt files with you - how can I do that securely?

Thanks,

Bezner Lim
