I am using an external drive to add files/folder media into my bin. I've created my timeline with various cuts from this media and hit save etc, When I disconnect the hard drive all my video clips basically disappear in my bin and in my movie timeline. All that is left is a damn message that says "media offline", what the hell is that and why does it lose the file association. In this case I'm losing MP4 media from my GoPro but my MP4 media from my cell phone remains. What is going on here. I'm extremely frustrated with the continual negative surprises from this platform.
Thanks,
Ivan
If you disconnect a drive, all goes off line: perfectly normal. This is not specific for Premiere. This will happen to all editing software.
Dont disconnect or put everything on a internal drive.
The software does not import the files physically but makes links to the files.
If you disconnect those links get broken.

Well that's just great. When does this software actually save the media
then?? What is it actually saving? Why does it not save the edited clips
in the timeline?? Explain that one.

It doesn't, unless you specifically tell it to by setting this up as an ingest condition.

The .prproj contains a database that instructs the application as to where the original source files are physically located and how and when to play them back.

It doesn't need to, it would be a huge media space hog if it did. It simply keeps track of what you have done with files as a series of instructions.
When you are done editing and you export from Premiere, Premiere uses these instructions to build a complete file as called for in the timeline and stores that at the location you choose.

Unfortunately there is a culture of 'blame the software' around here. It actually works to the disadvantage of people especially newer ones or the uninformed. Just blame the software and let it frustrate you.
It's better to have a bit more humility especially around here with those experts above that have been trying to help you... anyway, the things you are saying and your 'frustration' is harming your prospect of really learning this complicated professional software. You're missing some of the most basic ideas...
