Cross Dissolve does not always work

Cross Dissolve in Premiere Pro 2020 does not always work. If i chose the cross dissolve icon between two connected clips it shows me that it is placed. But if i play the clip at this area it does not work.When i chose "crop" for a clip it works to connect both clips with the "cross dissolve" option. I cant understand why its not working to connect 2 clips with cross dissolve if one clip are not edited with the option crop.

I tried to follow the steps of the Adobe Help Sites but it is not new for me. I know all these Steps and it does not explain how it works without the option "crop".

Has anyone an answer for this problem ?

Option Crop as in trimmed?

If you want a cross dissolve on both connecting clips both of these clips need to be trimmed (clips need handles).

If you want a 1 second transition in the middle of two clips with a framerate of 60, both clips need to be trimmed 30 frames.

If only one clip is trimmed then only one clip will have the transition showing.

Sometimes it's just easier to do your dissolves manually. Instead of relying on handles ( which used to be problematic sometimes due to starting dissolve on frames before you really want (handles)).

If you move your video to different levels you can use opacity keyframes and control exactly where you want to start and stop opacity. Basically a cross dissolve is where one clip fades out and the next one fades in.

Let's say you have a turtle in a clip and it cross dissolves to a duck.

Move the turtle to V2. Move the duck to V1.

Using opacity keyframes ( zoom in a lot to do this so you see indivual frames ) use the CTI to snap your keyframes exactly. Put a keyframe on turtle where you want to start fade out. It will be 100% opacity. Go forward one frame and make another keyframe. Now if you want you can also fade IN THE DUCK at same time, so using CTI you can make keyframes on the duck too. Or you can just reveal it. Depends on how exactly you want the dissolve to work. If you want to fade in the duck your first keyframe will be exactly below your first keyframe of turtle, but it will be 0% opacity.

When you move forward that one frame you would also duplicate that on both clips if you want ( or leave duck at 100% and reveal it)

Now you drag that 2nd keyframe to the right and down on the turtle till it is 0% opacity.

You can also drag UP that second keyframe on duck to where you want it to be 100%.

Sometimes, people see what they want to see: all you need to do is to carefully read what has been written. Do not jump to conclusion.

I have the same issue.   Both clips have tons of material on both end and beginning.   And, ususally, when it does not, the xfade shows zebra patern or does not stay in the middle of cut.  This is NOT the case.  The xfade is place correctly for sounf and for video, but the cursor hoes throgh as if there is no xfade is there.   and that only has to do with this particular type of fade.  If I place another type, it works beautifully.

Today I was editing in Adobe Premiere Pro 2023 on an M1 24 inch iMac and found when I added a cross dissolve to a mask and text object there was a glitch. I tried hiding each layer and found it was the mask that was causing the issue. 

How to fix it

I removed the cross dissolve and manually keyframed the opacity. Problem solved!
