This should be a very basic question -
After completing a project - is there any downside to going into the folder on windows and deleting all the files entitled "Rendered - nnnnnetc" both the media files and the xmp files? I realize that if for some reason I want to go back later to work on the project I would have to render it all again - but I am looking for a way to clean disk space and I would not mind rendering again if that is the only difference. I just do not want to destroy anything.
You can delete any temp files but as soon as you open the project they will be created again.

MIght want to do it the other way around: get a larger disk to create space.
A disk that in neary full always leads to trouble.

I have plenty of space on my computer for current projects - but have many projects I have done over the last few years and - I am just trying to save old projects onto an external hard drive and it is filling up (and it is a 2TB drive). So I am asking the downside of eliminating "Rendered- nnnnnetc." files from these old projects. And/or are there other files that I could delete to save space.

Thanks - I understand now that temp files can be deleted - but is there a list of which files are temp and ones that are not? Or which directories can be deleted? I am using Windows 10.

Your temp files are set in the Preferences/Media cache.
