Dropped frames in PPro CC ProRes 2k footage on iMac 27" 2017

Hi everybody,

I´m currently struggling with the following project which I´m trying to edit on an iMac 27" 2017.

Problem: Frames are dropped during playback. (The dropped frames indicator is showing a rapid increasingly amount of droppred frames within a few seconds from pressing the spacebar.) Due to the sluggish playback the editing process is impossible.

Consulting the Adobe support did not bring any improvements.

Specs editing system:

- iMac Retina 5K, 27", 2017, macOS 10.12.6

- 4,2 GHz Intel Core i7

- 32 GB 2400 MHz DDR4

- Radeon Pro 580 8192 MB

- HDD: Internal Apple SSD 512GB

Sequence:

- mode: ARRI Cinema

- timebase: 25 fps

- framesize: 2048x1152

Footage:

- size: 2048x1152

- framerate: 25,00

- compression: Apple ProRes 4444

(captured by an Arri Alexa Mini)

Software:

- Premiere Pro CC 12.0.1

No different software is currently running on the system. The linked footage is stored on the internal SSD.

If anybody has got ideas what might be the reason for this issue...

?

Thanks, Jo

Trying to run everything off one SSD might be the problem.  I would try using a very high speed USB 3 portable SSD like a Samsung T5 SSD and put all your project files and media on the USB 3 drive   That is my workflow on my PC Laptop.

Ok, whtat I found out is that ProRes 4444 file format from ALEXA Mini is probably beyond the compatibility of Adobe Premiere Pro. At least there are several people out there having had problems with this combo of Premiere and Alexa Mini 4444.

Adobe service did not answer anymore. Thus going by Avid Media Composer seems to be the most simple professional solution for this at the moment. At least there are no issues with play-backing the footage in MC natively (non-proxies). Actually too bad since I really like Premiere Pro.

Solution within Premiere Pro is still very welcome..

JoRaphael,

Does the Alexa Mini add a technical LUT on import? Let us know.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Kevin-Monahan,

yes, it adds some sort of REC709 LUT to the Alexa Mini footage unless Master Clip effects are deactivated. Doing that unfortunately doesn´t change anything on the playback issue.

Hey man I had the same issue especially with that upgrade to 12.0.1. I downgraded and the problem got worse. I tried the project on a different computer and still had drop frame when I exported it the file.

One thing that worked was, I exported an XML file, started a new project and im ported that XML, when i exported the film, it was all good. Give it a crack and let me know if it works for you.
