I would also like to add I have the same issue in Premiere Pro CC 2017.1.2 v11.0. My captions were at the default settings Arial size 38, 0 edge, black background and white text. It was working fine allowing me to write some captions in italics, but at the end of my project I decided to turn the background opacity to 0 and 'add edge' this immediately changed all my italics to regular.
Have also tested in cc2018 and the bug is still there...

I am using Premiere CC 2018, just updated to version 12.1.0 and I can confirm this problem. As soon as an edge is added to the font (in any "open caption") the Arial styles go back to Regular.
I have tested many fonts with the same result, and this doesn't limit to italic. Only regular is allowed, no bold, italic or bold italic will work along with edge.

2019.0.1; the edge setting does override any faux styles.
You can set italics, bold, etc, as along as edge is not set. This is true of italics set on only part of a line, and if you import captions with various italics set, changing the font or edge will override (remove?) all the italics.
