Export for Vimeo (feature film screener)

Explorer ,
Apr 01, 2018 Apr 01, 2018

Good morning,

I’m hoping someone can help me as I’m really struggling.

I need to upload a screener for a feature film so I can send out a private link, I plan on using Vimeo but I’m not having much luck in creating a video which is high enough quality.

I’ve had no issues with the DCP and Prores 422 files but obviously the file size is too much for upload. I’ve tried the h264 Vimeo option with variable bit rate of 15 to 20 but it is still looking quite pixelated. The file is coming in around 10gb and the film has a running time of 84 minute

Try YouTube.  I upload DNx files to them exclusively.  They also have a Private function.

check their recommended specs for upload. vimeo has been legal video levels in the past 16-235. it doesn't say if they have changed to

full 0-255. I'd upload two color charts as video and choose the one that looks the best.

When you upload a video to Vimeo, it will take a while for the higher quality versions to display. Vimeo prepares versions that are quality appropriate to the device viewing them, and in my experience after uploading, the lower quality files (meant for quick and easy download to mobile devices) are first to come online.

Click the cog on the bottom right of the Vimeo viewer and you'll see the display options that are available for your file, you may have to wait a while for the highest quality files (since you program is so large) to become available for streaming:

I load programs to Vimeo that run 40-45 minutes in H.264 1080p compressed to 12 to 14 Mb/s and they look ok.

Morning all and many thanks for your replies.

My issue is with the quality being exported from Premiere, I haven’t produced anything good enough to upload to Vimeo yet. I’ve tried several things which includes VBR (10 to 20) and CBR at 20.

I still recommend exporting to DNx (or Cineform).  Both are excellent quality options.

It’s quite frustrating, we’ve had 4 cinema showings 3 of which used a DCP file and one a Prores 422 and it looked great. I’ve now been asked to upload to a private link for some media reviews and I can’t seem to get anything that does it justice.

I’ve posted a screenshot of my export settings, can anyone spot anything I’ve missed or got wrong?

Try CBR and if you have a dedicated videocard turn off MRQ.

Thanks Ann, I’m exporting it now with a constant bit rate and have set it at 40. I’d tried a CBR before set at 20 but the quality wasn’t great.

Apologies for the delay, I've been locked away with little access to the internet for a few days....

Here's my settings, any help is very much appreciated. I'm also going to give DNx a try, it's not a format I'm familiar with so thanks for the info.

Hi Jim,

just having a look look at this now, is this the DNxHD option? Apologies if it’s a silly question but it’s not a format I’m familiar with.

Also there’s a few sub options such as 8 bit etc, anything I need to be aware of?

Once again many thanks.

There's DNxHD and DNxHR.  They are slightly different, but I often use the DNx abbreviation to include both options.

Google around a bit.  You'll find info on them.
