'the importer reported a generic error'
Can anyone help me??
Thanks!!

and what format are your sources? If you double-click on one of the files from the finder, will they open in quicktime player?
Media Info will tell you the important details of your sources

You keep saying "AVI's" as if that means something to you, but unfortunately it doesn't mean anything to other people, that's why they are asking. AVI or MP4 or MPG is just a container for your video file. If I were to guess, your AVI files are ancient, in some odd codec as AVI files used to be. Likely Premiere can't decode them anymore, hence the question "can you open them in quicktime" or whatever player you have. These questions aren't asked to waste your time but your answers are wasting other people's time as you continue to choose not to make the effort being asked.
More or less you likely have to transcode the footage to something more modern. Probably the easiest solution for you.

thanks for your response - sorry to waste your time - I have visited https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo/Download as suggested (where I noticed that avi'as are refereed to as a 'format')
The container holds files which have been ripped with Prores codec (using Mpeg Streamclip).
Transcoding sounds good - I can't use Mpeg Streamclip anymore as Catalina won't run it - is there a good equivalent for Mac?
Many thanks...

Hi mgrenadier - sorry, yes the avi's do open in Quicktime. They were ripped in Mpeg Streamclip using Prores codec...

Prores in an avi? Never knew this excisted. Dont think this is something Pr supports.
Catalina does not support avi at all.

I've made all my Pr video work using avi's - never imported anything else!
Are you saying Pr in Catalina will not recognise avi's?
Do you think this project will open properly in Pr 14.3?

If it is an old video clip and you are using CS 6 the video link below might be helpful. You might be able to simply change the files extenions.
