Welcome to the forum.
First, your Project/Sequence Preset MUST match your source footage 100%. If not, there will be issues.
What is your Project/Sequence Preset?
What are the full, and complete details of your source footage?
If it used to work, obviously something has changed. These above two items should be looked into first. Maybe the wrong Project/Sequence Preset, or maybe different source footage? If the latter, you might need to convert that source footage to get it to work.
Good luck,
Hunt

I get this everytime I import a video. What do I do?
Don't 'import' your video. 'Capture' them from a tape based MiniDV camera. Report back if this works.

I'm new to Adobe and have captured footage from a DV141HD tape. I kept to original size as I need the best quality I can output. Was originally working, then I discovered Bridge, Encore and some of the other programs that accompanied CS4 had not been installed on the laptop I have. I selectively installed these only. I restarted my computer but now when I open my project it does not recognise the media that was already there and when I attempt to retrieve it from the hard drive (Mac), it comes up with the above message: File video dimensions (width/height) too large.
Can someone please help???

Hello,
I am new to this forum, as well to Adobe Premiere 4. With that said I am also new to video editing, as I am a photographer by triad. Last summer I shot some footage and captured it using PP4. At that point I was able to view and edit my mpeg files no problem. Just recently I sat down to get back to editing and received the aforementioned error code.
Since then I have read these forums thoroughly and have tried various things...
Ran the latest PP4 update
Pointed all of my files back to the source file
Wiped my project clean and started over
Converted my mpeg files to AVI
Still to no avail. The error code persists.
I understand that I am ignorant to this program and this is most likely a case of operator malfunction. Like I said before, I shot this footage last summer and am not quite sure what my original footage dimensions are. My best guess would be that some how these dimensions changed from my PP4 presets. So my question is, how do I find out what my original video dimensions are? And why would this change if I have not even so much as looked at the footage since last June? It was shot on a Cannon XH G1, and I believe I shot it 16.9 at 29.97fpsbut cant be sure.
Also, another oddity, is that when I reopened my PP4 project, an i-movie video that I was working on was in my PP4 timeline. Could that have something to do with it? Consequently the footage from the i-movie said "media pending". Nor could I view my mpeg files in i-movie.
It seems as though I am not the only person experiencing this problem. Can anyone help?
Thank you for your time
P.S. If you do have any insight into my problem, can you please respond to me as if I was 4 years old. I am still learning the program and am having trouble understanding all of the lingo.

First off, listen to Daddy.
Your G1 records on tape in standard definition DV Format. So the tape speed (NTSC) is 29.97. Your format is DV NTSC 720 x 480. Start off with a DV preset of NTSC 720x480 with 29.97 framerate. I'm not sure if your camera fakes widescreen or really records widescreen, so try 4 x 3 dimension and if your girlfriend is suddenly very leggy and skinny, decide whether that is how you want to picture her, or choose 16 x 9, which may not be as complimentary to her. You decide. You are a big boy now.
Best from Dad...

Anyone,
I sympathize with many others as I'm getting a similar error now using using CS4 Premiere. In my case I was able to import "earlier this week" a flash file into Premiere CS4... now this same file fails. I made a new fresh project and still end-up with the same error for my quicktime sequences and flash and yes they have different FPS from 11fps to 29fps and sizes. It did work earlier this week?? I'm working on a Vista 64 using CS4 web premium. Anyone have input as Harm is not answering the questions to us novice users... I've used Premiere since 2002 and this is new to me.... That is the need to have all video sequences the same width/height as suggested by Harm. I'm trying to build a video sequence for fmy amily which has varied input old tape, quicktime, flash and DV. HELP needed for the lame as any input and suggestions are highly appreciated. I would like to see resolution to this error!

With that large a variety of source materials, framerates and dimensions, Google for a converter and convert everything to DV AVI type2. That makes mixing and editing a lot easier. You take a quality hit with all the delivery non-editable formats, but nothing can be done about that.

Ok,
So I converted the files to AVI, and put my presets to DV NTSC with a framerate of 29.97 720X480. Still the same message. What am I doing wrong? Does it have anything to to with the 'Title Safe' margins. they are set at 20%X20% and the action safe is at 10%X10%.
Please let me know if there is any important information I may be leaving out here.

What are the settings under AVI? Those are very important. This ARTICLE will give you some background on "wrappers," and what can be contained within.
What converter are you using? They are not all created equal, and some are much more useful than others.
Good luck,

The converter program I am using is called 'Handle Break'. It was free. Can you recommend one that has the appropriate AVI conversion settings?
The settings (or at least what I think you are asking for) are as follows.
Video: Codec H.264 (x264) Framerate: Same as source, Grayscale encoding: unchecked, Quality: Constant quality: 100%
Picture Settings
Source: 1440 x 1088, Output: 1440 x 816, Anamorphic: Off Keep aspect ratio: On Crop: Auto, Denoise Off, Detelecine: No Deinterlace: Off, Deblock: Off Decomb: Off
As I am a mac user I was unable to download the 'G-Spot' program. I was, however, able to download 'MediaInfo' but unfortunately it is an unfinished program (on the mac side), and did not show up in my applications folder. Any other recommendations?
I did read the article you wrote, it was helpful, but I still do not understand. Why would it work in the past and not now? Furthermore, why would Premier automatically capture the files as MPEG's if it is incapable of being able to see them? This seems completely ludicrous to me.
Thank you for your patients. I do not want you to think I am ungrateful for your help, just frustrated by my own ignorance.

Unfortunately, I am a PC-only guy, and have no clue what is available for Mac, or is even X-platform. Many Mac users choose Hand Brake, but I have no experience with it. Maybe a Mac-user can help you out, as I am out of my element with Mac.

Ah this is very annoying!
I have a cs4 install on my machine now and am getitng the same thing. I tried all sorts of projects. I have the codecs to play the file i want to import as well. Just keep getting "File video dimensions (width/height) too large". Is there any resolution for this at all?
i am taking a 720x480 m4v file. i tried to convert to mpeg2, tried to convert to h263 (re convert) and i still get the error. using many different project types, pars and framerates. cs3 never complained that the file wasnt EXACTLY the correct dimensions. Infact, i would frequently create a blank project and then import a file just to see what premiere said the correct PAR FPS and dimensions were. So i doubt it is becuase the project is not the same dimensions as the source (which it is anyways, checking with GSPOT)
Very strange problem. I treid reinstalling my codec pack as well.
my OS is windows 7.

I'm sorry for your frustration. This too plagued me on my Dell XPS using Windows 64 for Premiere Pro CS4. What fixed this for me? I used Dell's remote help or remote "hire for service" which adjusted my Premiere startup application to adjust the color scheme and honestly I have not had any problems. This did cost me but to me it was worth it as it fixed my problem and I'm able to load an array of media. Adobe does need to fix this problem for Windows users!

Hello !
Premiere Pro CS4 is my first and the only one video editor I ever used.
My OS is Windows 7 Pro on I7 processor with 6 GB RAM, and 2 x 600 GB HD space, regulary updated.
I record AVCHD video on Panasonic HDC-TM300 video camera.
In last 6 months I edited in PP CS4 numorous videos imported from my camera to HD of my PC.
All videos were allways the same format:
file extension: m2ts
file format: MPEG movie
image size: 1920x1080
frame rate: 25
pixel aspect ratio: 1
For example, one of my "movies" is 85 minutes long - it is assembled from over 380 clips from my video camera, combined with about 20 audio/music (mp3) files and about 20 audio/voice recordings (mp3) and about 20 still images 1920x1080. I regulary aplied various transitions between each two clips.
Resulting prproj file has size of 7175 KB, and resulting mpg has size of 12 GB.
And everything is, and works perfect.
But ...
Now I'm working on another project.
Video files are from the same camera, imported to PC HD with the same software, in exactly same format.
Project settings are the same as they were on all my previously (successfully finished) projects.
I put on my timeline about 20 minutes of video, extracted in PP CS4 from about 65 m2ts files.
To this point everything works perfect - I can render effects, I can generate neatly working mpg.
But, if I want, and i do want to import one more m2ts file, guess what happens ...
"File video dimensions (width/height) too large."
Not to mention that I want (have) to import another 300 m2ts files.
? ! ? ! ? ? ?
Help, anyone, please

Hmmm,
I guess that PR is Premiere, but what do you mean by OE (Overall Experience, Operating Environment, Online Equipment...) and AI (American Industry, Afganistan Imigrants, Authentic Instalation... or...) ?!?
Sorry, but not helpfull at all.

Bruvo,
So the AVCHD camcorder records to m2t files? Just curious if these are converted or something.
By extracted you mean edited down then by generate you mean exported, correct?
And I guess you are saying that you can't add any 1 more file to the project. To see if there's some sort of limit going on, try (save a new project as, so you don't loose anything you don't want to loose) deleting a few clips from the bin then importing the 1 more m2t file. Still an error, or does it import?
See if the project is 'corrupt': start a new project and import the files that are giving you errors. If they work then maybe your original project is having specific issues. What you can do is a) import the old project into the new project and continue working from that timeline, b) cntr-A and copy everything in your sequence, then start a new project, go into the sequence and paste everything in.
If it doesn't let you import with a brand new project, then something's up with either those specific clips or the program itself.

Firstodd,
First thank you for the serious approach to my problem.
I do not know how AVCHD camcorder records files inside itself. After files are imported (via HD Writer AE 1.0, software that I got with the camera) to my PC hard drive, they have extension m2ts.
By extracted I mean: Put the clip in the Source Window, mark "IN" and "OUT" points and then then "extract", (drag/drop, put) a part of it to the timeline.
By generate I mean: export, make, produce mpg file I can play in Media Player.
I spent some time experimenting with new "vergin" project files, importing clips, then the same time with the project file that gives me headaches.
I determined that I have at least one m2ts file which is "incorrect" in some mystirous way. When I try to import it, I receive the error message, and after that point, I can not import any other clip - allways the same error message. But if I skip this one, everything is so far OK...
Well, I can live without this one, thank you very much !

Bruvo,
No problem.
I've seen corrupt ("incorrect") P2 .mxf files do something similar to this before, where we lost 1 or 2 of the shots we had. One of the few downfalls of file based recording =( .
That's interesting that it bugs the program or project and you can't import anything afterwards. Good to remember.

DID YOU RECENTLY UPGRADE TO MAC OS 10.6?
I did and that is what I think caused this problem for me. After updating the OS, is when this problem started. I tried everything in the forum.. I updated to the latest version of Premeire, and OS 10 (10.6.2 And still couldnt import mpeg or my mov files - that were already in my existing projects even.
I finally reinstalled Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 - as much of a hassle it is - IN FINALLY WORKED!!

I have exactly the same problem with my Premiere CS4 File video dimensions width/height too large. I'm working with 4.2.1 Version. Mac Leopard. With exactly the same settings and the same file sometimes gives the error/sometimes not. For what I see this problem is very old and affects different platforms (windows XP, windows 7, Mac). I'm sure its just another bug of this CS4, a very buggy program, very unstable that has maked me loose a lot of time, please Adobe, do something and do it now, I'm going to Final Cut or whatever program that just lets me edit when I want to edit, and don't converts editing in a nightmare.

@croquetarra I agree its too bad this was so buggy. This problem happened to
me after I updated my Mac Pro OS to Snow Leopard. I finally tried
uninstalling and re-installing PP CS4 and that worked. Its worth a try.
